Most eponysterical post or comment

After seeing this post appear just now, are there other good recent examples of eponysterical posts or comments? The definition in the Mefi Wiki and Urban Dictionary, a 2007 Meta on the origin of the term which is a fun read, a 2005 Meta on such posts and comments and the old list compiled by scarabic.

Post About Flower Symbolism and Gifting Flowers

I vaguely recall a post about the gifting of flowers and the symbolic meaning behind them. And I think it's also a post that talks about this being done in a specific period of history, like the 20s/30s (could be very wrong about this part) and how this relates to the type of relationship you're trying to establish with a person? You'd give a person a rose if you wanted to send this message or a yellow tulip if you wanted this type of relationship. Please and thank you.

An FPP is not a place for them to make a point. It is a place to share.

Mischaracterizing the link. Trying to prove a conspiracy. Rampant editorializing. Effective double posts due to retread of the same discussions/topics being made by the same users. These things make for crappy posts. They would not occur if people would learn that a front page Metafilter post is not a place for them to make a point. It is a place to share .

what IS metafilter?

"This website exists to break down the barriers between people, to extend a weblog beyond just one person, and to foster discussion among its members."

-or-

"MetaFilter is about posting links to interesting sites."

Which is correct?

Finding interesting sites is a solved problem. I was always under the impression that the former was the more important feature of MeFi.

MetaTalk is more for venting than preventing

The common wisdom is that MetaTalk is more for venting than preventing; that it's read by an (obsessive) minority of users and that its suggestions and strictures are ineffective. And yet...[More inside.]

But, I thought MeFi was *about* the news

Hi,

I'm new. Been here a month or so. I'm not even sure if it's appropriate for me to post this here, now, but damn the torpedoes, or whatever. I bought my account, because I had been reading metafilter for almost a year and wanted to join in the discussion.

I'm seeing a lot of discussion about too much news, too many links posted to the front page.

But, I thought MeFi was *about* the news. If it's not, what is it, then?

And it occurs to me that the whole point of having loose guidelines with anyone being able to post to the front page is so that the site can grow and change.

That's organic, and that's the point isn't it? That it's not plastic with karma whores and it's not a newsgroup with trolls and spammers.

Do you want the group to evolve over time or not? And if not, what do you want? I think I've read all the faqs and things I'm supposed to read, but apparently I still don't get it. Because I don't understand what the oldtimers are upset about.

And this isn't to stir up controversy, but I'm looking to be enlightened. Have the few things I posted to the main page been out of place? How about some new guidelines for us newbies?

MeFites do awesome things - why am I sitting here reading MeFi?

I'm having a mid-life crisis and it's all Metafilter's fault! This is especially upsetting as I'm only 31 and this means I'll be dead by 62. Honestly, though, the more I read about what others here are creating and persuing, the more I find myself wondering what the hell I'm doing with my life. Perhaps this is good, in that maybe this will motivate me to get off my ass and contribute something to the world. I'm just wondering, am I the only one who fells like this reading the 'filter? Is this actually a mid-life crisis or am I just going crazy?

meaning of your metafilter to metatalk ratio

A diversion: what is your MetaFilter to MetaTalk ratio? Linkwise and commentwise? And what does it say about you?

philosophy and metafilter

he ehe hello.
um, following the thread regarding multple posts within 24hrs i shall make this a single post. which is probably about to be deleted.

1. has there been a case where one person has registered two names in order to argue against themselves? a kind of plato thing. how would that be spotted?

2. have i stumbled upon one of the must self affirming experiences of my life? i enjoy metafilter due to the quality of debate, i feel that there are other people *like* me. is this simply because of the thorough 'policing' of the site removing all 'trolls' etc? am i living in a dream-world where what you say is as important as how you say it?

well, anyhoo, i'd like to thank the community for it's strength and openess in these emotive times.
