I Wanna Take A Ride On Your Media Stick! Inspired by this post, and the ongoing talk in the thread about "image control" etc. I'm also reading And Then There's This, by Bill Wasik right now (he started the whole Flash Mob trip awhile back..), which is all about the life-cycle of viral stories in pop culture. He also name-checks Metafilter a few times in this book, for those keeping score. I'm curious to hear how media/pop culture/viral memes fits in the metaverse for folks, what effects if any it's had on the way you see the media, or pop culture or yourself. What's going on for you when you endorse something disposable in the culture, whether it's a meme, a pop star, a diet, a Three Wolf Moon shirt. What does "owning one's image" mean to you specifically if what's happening to you might be a passive receiving of media static? In what ways has your life over the years changed from the introduction of viralism in the culture, or the speed of what you take in through it? Big question? Sure. Fun topic? OH HELLS YES. Release the hounds!

Another request to find a lost MeFi post

I am trying to find the MeFi post to a YouTube video that features a little girl singing. The video was processed by the video poster by taking several snippets of a little girl talking, squealing, screeching and clapping a pair of flip-flops together. The result was an absolutely endearing "song", with a little synthesizer thrown in. The post was probably made around a year ago. The little kid is probably 3 or 4 and has long dark curly hair. It's difficult to search for it because a lot of the comments were people imitating the song: aaah aaah OOOOH ah ah, ah ahhh ah oooo OOO! etc. I thought I had bookmarked it, but apparently I did not. I'd be grateful if anyone has the link, or has any idea what I'm talking about. (I was humming it today for some reason, so now I need to find it) Full Disclosure: I suck at MetaFilter. That's why I don't post much. I think this is where one posts these requests. I'll take my deletion with a smile if I'm wrong or if I'm displaying bad form. I hope I've given enough information.

MetaFilter gets a mention in M Magazine (the magazine that comes with The Age in Melbourne). Slightly odd reference, not an internet sort of article. The article is titled "Fashion in the fields" - "You might have tickets, but do you fit in? ... a detailed guide to Melbourne's music-festival fashion tribes". It has a drawn picture and description of the different types - The Costume Guy, The Emo, The Elitist, The Hippie, The Nu-Raver, The Newborn and The Glamazon. And finally, The Seth Rogan. Look Web designer's day out: cargo pants and novelty slogan shirt from bustedtees.com. Accessories iPhone for Twitter updates, satellite navigator that speaks in the voice of Yoda. A spare T-shirt that says "South Korea's Got Seoul". There to see Chicks. Catchphrase "Hey, these guys got a 95 on MetaFilter!" Warning He doesn't understand that you're cooler than him.

Jessamyn linked by Michelle Malkin. Congratulations may not be in order, but it's interesting how fast this spread. The only reason I saw this, incidentally, was that the banned book list was forwarded to me and I googled it. Second result is Malkin, fourth is Metafilter's own jessamyn. (Too bad about the order.)

MeFi is still a classic.

I thought for sure that someone would mention MeFi's inclusion on PCMag's "100 Classic Websites of 2008" list. So, allow me. Although it's more than just "fun and games", I say congrats nonetheless. My favorite part of the mini-review is "Make it a point to browse the site for a while and you'll learn something, even if against your will."

This AskMe question about sad music was cited in an article in the May 2008 issue of the Walrus. Perhaps of interest for those of you who like to keep track of such things :) The article's not bad either. The Walrus is a Canadian New Yorker/Harpers wannabe that never quite manages to hold my attention. I was flipping through a back issue today and discovered this AskMe citation, which I had missed before.
