In general I think there is a flaw in our systems here in that we spend an entire thread deciding where to go, but there is no reliable or predictable place that puts all the details in one location. So I have been hacking that with custom posts that put everything in one place.

Milwaukee area MeFites: Ira Glass (of This American Life) is speaking at the UWM Student Union on Saturday, October 24th, at 7pm. Meetup before/during/afterward? More info here and here (just search for "Ira Glass" on the page). Tickets range from $5-$25 dollars depending on when you get them and if you have any sort of student status. I unfortunately might be called out of town on Saturday at the last minute, but I thought I'd at least let other people know about this.

45: The one we recorded live at Jessamyn's house

This was our first in-room recording of all three of us, sitting in jessamyn's house in Vermont. It was recorded on September 14th right before this meetup and runs about 25 minutes. cortex made the theme song about an hour ago, in the Portland, Oregon airport and the song at the end is Meanest Words by chococat. There's a bit of echo from the room and a couple cellphone syncing noises but otherwise it turned out great. Hopefully we'll get to record like this again sometime.

Las Vegas. September 23rd. Night time. You. Me. Cortex. Let's do this thing. cortex and I are in Las Vegas Sept 23-25, he on the cross-country tour (which now has its own site) and me, I'm there for Interbike (fulfilling a childhood dream). I'm busy in the day doing convention stuff and the night of the 24th is the Mobile Social ride, but my 23rd night is free. I don't think cortex has ever been there, but I've been there many dozens of times but I'm not the biggest fan of Vegas. I know someone can prove me wrong and suggest a cool place to hang out and talk that isn't filled with depressing old people gambling away their retirement while smoking their way into emphysema. So Las Vegans, tells us where and when, and we'll be there.

Ten.Metafilter.Com = Meetup.Metafilter.Com After all the wonderful work that Matt and pb did creating the anniversary subsite, it seems a shame to let it all lapse. It seems like it would be trivially easy* to clone it in a more permanent fashion, with the same city-subsite function where we could plan parties and barhops using the google maps integration while chatting, sharing photos, and maybe subscribing to specific twitter hashtags. *Sufficiently advanced html is indistinguishable from magic to primitive natives like me. Are we at Web ∞.0 yet?

MeetUp Ettiquette: I know that the mods are not our moms and will not be present at meet-ups, but are there any basic ground rules (and/or can we establish some) to govern interpersonal interactions at meet-ups? I have epilepsy and can not be around flash photography. I mentioned this in a Boston meet-up thread, and was responded to by a user who said that this was going to be "interesting" as he was definitely using flash. Several people, myself included, hoped he was joking. The second response was that he was going to avoid this "crisis" by attending another location. I tried MeMail with this specific user to no avail. I can not for the life of me understand why someone would insist on doing something to a complete stranger and fellow MeFite that will *knowingly* physically harm that person. I have no idea what my response even should be at this point, but I'm inclined to think that forgoing future meet-ups might be my best bet - just as I would never go to a party where I knew there was going to be a strobe light, I'm not going to attend a meet-up if "No flash" is an unreasonable request.

Tightening up the Tenth

The 10th parties are less than a month away, and there have been a few common questions since we launched the 10th site on May 5th. Since the actual parties are getting close, we thought we'd nail down a few things as well. In short, I'll cover deadlines for nominations and scheduling as well as payments. We've got to curtail the mish-mash of planned and unplanned meetups as well as lay out our ideas for payments to party planners well before the events actually take place. So here it is: 1) If you have 3-10 people attending, have your meetup and then take a photo of the final bar tab and upload it to flickr with the tag mefi10tab (your other photos should have mefi10 on them). I'll paypal $50 to the party organizer we have on file a few days after the parties are over. 2) If you have 10+ people, do the same and a few days later I'll paypal $100 to the organizer. 3) On July 1st, we'll no longer accept new city nominations to go into planning. We're closing in on two months of planning so far and at some point we need to close it before the parties are starting. 4) On July 7th, we'll cut the parties listed as still in planning stages, keeping just the scheduled ones. Cutting down on the number of cities still in planning makes the whole lining up of paypal a lot easier. We aimed for at least 3 people because it didn't make much sense to help fund a meetup with just a member and their spouse. We'll reimburse after the parties and I'm looking forward to seeing what the total global bar spending tab is for the whole event. If you have any further questions, drop them in here.

MeFi Tenth Anniversary Site launched

Today we're unveiling the sub-site to organize meetups for the upcoming tenth anniversary. Let me run down the aspects of it with a few development screenshots: 1. The homepage will eventually look something like this. A list of all scheduled meetups and proposed ones still in the planning stages, along with a google map of them all. There is a link to organize one in your own town not listed. 2. If you want to organize an anniversary meetup, you'll see a signup screen a lot like this. We're asking for paypal addreses so that we can send some money your way after the meetup takes place ($50-100 in most cases for well-attended meetups). 3. A party in the planning stages will look something like this. You can spot the organizer, people can say whether they are attending or might be, and people can start several threads about the upcoming meetup. 4. Only the organizer can decide on the venue, date, and time, and they'll see something like this screen to pick out the exact meetup location. 5. When a venue/time is decided on, the meetup page for that city will look something like this. A huge obvious banner shows where and when it'll be, with a link to Google Maps to help you get there. 6. After a meetup takes place, we'll display photos from the event like the screenshot here. We're actually still developing a way to do this, most likely through the use of tags we'll ask you to put on the event photos. We'll have an "all photos from all meetups" page as well. We might incorporate twitter posts from attendees during the event as well. This is still a work in progress, but we think it'll make things organized and make it easier for people to find nearby meetups and for us admins to be able to locate the organizer and help pay the bar tab for the evening. There are likely tons of bugs so if you spot any problems during the process of organizing something, and please, please only apply if you are dead serious about hosting, organizing, and being the person on the hook for the event itself.

Let's try this again... London meet-up, late January? I'll be in town from January 22-February 4th, staying in Bloomsbury, and would love to meet any/all of you. A meet-up would be nice; I'll happily accept any and all offers of lunch dates or morning strolls and museum trips, tours of your various neighborhoods, etc. I'll be staying at a small hotel in Bloomsbury. Any recommendations/locale suggestions involving Belgian beer will make it easier for me to coax the boyfriend out with me in the evening when he's finished work. So, should I just throw out some dates? When are people available?

We're not Seattle, so we should have our own damn meetup!* The mister and I are on Bainbridge, and I know there is at least one other MeFite out here. Also I have been in touch with Netzapper and he says he and his wife, both in Indianola, are down for getting together, though she has a wacky schedule. So -- if there's anyone out there other than the four of us -- when? maybe sometime in the next few weekends? and where? this will presumably depend on who wants to come. * Seattle meetups are also awesome

Last-Minute Denver meetup?! 7(ish) PM tonight, Baker District. Hi, a friend and I are planning to watch election returns at the Hornet Restaurant - 76 Broadway in Denver. Basically it was so awesome watching the acceptance speech at the DNC here, we figured it might make a good place to also watch the returns. Hopefully it won't be packed, realistically it probably will... Attention Portland, OR mefites: Portland's literary festival, WordStock, occurs November 8th and 9th. Among the guests are internet troubadour Jonathan Coulton and MetaFilter's own John Hodgman, who will be doing an hour long panel together. Also, I'm going to be working at the booth for Ooligan Press for a good chunk of the weekend. Part of the time I will be running a pitch table, along with some of my fellow publishing students. So, if anyone is planning on attending the festival, I'd be more than happy to act as meeting-up point for any WordStock Metafilter hanging-out hijinks. And if anyone has a book or book idea that you think meets Ooligan's editorial interests (you can find that information on the website), feel free to bring it to the pitch table. I can't promise to give you any preferential treatment, but you might be more comfortable pitching your book to someone you know from the internet than to a complete stranger.

Autumn has come; the leaves in the Gatineau Hills are changing, and now that the election campaign has come and gone, the scrutineers are growing their glossy winter pelts. Maybe time for an Ottawa meetup? Yon search function tells me it has been a year since any such notion was pitched, and I think it's high time we of the turgidly named National Capital Region met up and made merry sport. As a reference point, how does some Friday evening in November sound? What is people's pleasure? Somewhere in The Glebe? Byward Market, perhaps? Further afield?

London meetup Nov 4th - US Election Night. Let's face it, we're all going to be checking the internet obsessively, so we might as well do it together! This idea was raised at yesterday's meetup and a few people seemed interested. Obviously it'd require staying over at someone's house and probably booking the 5th off as a holiday, but aside from that, it could be a lot of fun. Large quantities of pizza, beer, laptops, Mefi madness - what's not to want? Other ideas: - a Mefi Election Night IRC channel, because loading the inevitable 10,000 comment thread is going to be pretty tough on everyone's bandwidth... - a Ustream.TV feed from London, so you can see all our commentary and shenanigans, live from the interwebs!

Los Angeles Meetup for Bootie LA on November 1st. Who's in? Yes, I know that there's a significant portion of the Metafilter population that's sick of mashups. Yes, I know that we're all pasty internet nerds who can't dance. Yes, I know that I've failed to attend the last two meetups that I've proposed. Having said that, I've been having a lot of fun attending Bootie LA, and I'm willing to bet that at least of few of you could also have fun there. The next event is the after-Halloween show on November 1st, and I'm proposing that we meet somewhere for a late dinner and then head to the Echoplex for drinks and dancing. I guarantee only the finest of fun and good times. Also, alcohol.

Vancouver BC Meetup

Hey Cascadia. This month, there have been meetups in Seattle, San Fran (twice!), and Portland. What about Vancouver, BC? How about Nov 8th (Saturday)? That gives everyone enough time to RSVP. As for venue... I'd have no complaints about the Brickhouse on 730 Main, but would be open to other places. I'm biased towards the Brickhouse because I could walk there.

Sci Fi Screening Room event meet-up in NYC? I've been asked to present a clip at Frankenstein Night in the East Village on Monday the 27th, and I thought it would be a good opportunity for mefites to mingle under Halloween-esque pretenses. In addition to old clips there will also be a radio-play performance of Mary Shelley's original story. Admission is $7. The venue, Under St. Marks, has a bar, and it would be a blast to go out foraging after the curtain has fallen.
