[RSS PSA] Reminder to update your MetaFilter RSS feeds

Last month, an apparent error in Feedburner caused several of MeFi's legacy RSS feeds to not update for up to a week (at least in my popular feed reader, Feedly). The problem has been fixed -- for now. But it's an important reminder that the Feedburner platform is increasingly unreliable -- if it were ever shut down by Google, the thousands of readers who rely on those feeds to keep up with the site may lose contact without even realizing it. The good news is that the site has a new set of self-hosted feeds that should remain active no matter what Google does. So, if you read the site using an RSS reader, please take a moment to update your reader to the new feeds -- and check the related posts on MetaFilter and Ask MetaFilter for a list of posts you might have missed during the outage.

What exactly is a link?

Should linking to a Google cache of pedophile site as opposed to the actual site itself be allowed? (It's the last link, titled "Here it is").

OK, it was a link to a google search, but why delete??

Itchy trigger finger? I liked that post, and it seems like everyone else who posted did too -- no-one seemed to be snarking or complaining or asking for it to go. Sure, it's a link to a Google search, but an interesting one I hadn't thought of before. It was headed for a fun interweb memories thread... but then it was tragically taken from us. As an official Metafilter King, I would urge you to reconsider.

Will the search feature be coming back any time?

Ever since MeFi's search feature went away and it now lets you search google or yahoo, I'm having trouble finding past posts I'm looking for. Right now I'm looking for a post from within the last month or so where you could enter a URL into this website and it would give you a bunch of feedback on how good/bad it was, etc..

Will the search feature be coming back any time? Google/yahoo don't seem to order by date, and seem to mix in all sorts of stuff that clouds up my search. I loved being able to restrict my search to "within the last month", etc...

MefiLawyers Google Group

Inspired by this thread, I've set up MefiLawyers, a Google Groups mailing list for the lawyer and lawyer-wannabe Mefite community. Given that Metafilter is growing in leaps and bounds, e-networking in subcommunities of shared interests seems like a good idea, so I figured I'd start the avalanche. Matt, if this is a pony that you'd rather take in-house, that would be cool too.

Googlewashing recursively

MetaFilter: Such a powerful force, it has "Googlewashed" the term "Googlewash".
Now, let's try a really challenging meme: OW! (which actually started here to give credit where it's... OW!

Is Google indexing broken?

When I wanted to do a search to find out if someone had linked to a given site in a FPP yet, I decided to try something different. I went to old google and put in this URL, which was the link in the most popular FPPof the day exactly two weeks ago, as a "who link's to you?" search.

Shouldn't google have indexed the thread, then, since it links back to the original article? Strange, that it doesn't do this for a link and lenghty thread on a topic that will have serious implications for everyone on the internet, specifically Americans? Has google dropped the ball? Is this all just a bunch of Tom-Foolery?

Fewer updates on google services pls

If I'm making something out of nothing, please let me know.

However, I was wondering if we could possibly put a stop to FPPs that report on every new feature at the Google website? Considering the hand-in-hand nature of MeFi users and Google, it seems to be a given that we will all discover these new features by ourselves...

Yes, I know, we can discuss the usefulness of these new features. However, since when was MeFi a web-tech / design forum? Google is cool, but I use the site dozens of times every day — as I'm sure most MeFI users do. I don't really think we need burning missives telling us that a new tab has been added. It's not like Google is crowded; we're not going to miss seeing it ourselves.

Like I said, if I'm completely off base, I'm more-than willing to concede.

Better than Google Images?

Help: can anybody point me to the thread where they discussed various image-search engines better than google's? I think the original post was about one that used some sort of fuzzy logic system instead of just keywords.
