Artists' control of their output at Mefi Music

I have a fairly radical idea, concerning MeFi Music, which I'd like to run up the flagpole. You know, see if anyone salutes it. The idea is this: people who submit songs to MetaFilter Music would retain the option of removing them at any time, much like people can do with their videos at YouTube, or the soundfiles that music bloggers make available for downloading through their blogs. This would encourage more people, I believe, to post music here. Why do I think this? Well...

Musicians may want to share their output on a temporary basis, as opposed to forever, for any number of reasons. One is that they may want to put something out there that's not "finished", in order to get a little feedback, 15 minutes of fame, whatever, but they might not want that music sitting there on the web for all time. Another reason might be that the song he/she posted to MeFiMu is suddenly up for consideration by some label (and that might include a self-release by the artist himself) that doesn't want a free version sitting there on the net. Or maybe, hey, come the light of day, that masterpiece that sounded so good after your third bowl (I'm talking cereal, of course) isn't something you want to have people listening to after you're dead. Or before. Or ever.

I also think that having such a system in place might increase the listenership at Mefi Music. Why? Well, take the model of music blogs: people know to stop by regularly to their favorite music blogs to see what's on offer for listening or downloading, because they know it won't be there forever. If people think something is going to be there forever, no risk of missing anything, they're often less likely to visit regularly, and are actually often likely to forget about it. It's not necessarily a good thing, therefore, for people to know that everything will always be there at MeFiMu.

Now, chances are, the majority of posts to MeFiMu would be there forever, and that's great. But wouldn't it be a good thing, for the reasons I've outlined above, if the people who generously provide the free music to MeFiMu could also have the option of removing it, if they want to or need to?

Recommendations for MeFi Music Contacts

Whose activity should I be watching on Metafilter Music? I recently discovered the real power of sidebar contact activity; namely, being alerted when a talented MeFi musician posts a new song for all of us to enjoy.

I'm currently tracking cortex, chococat, frenetic and Jofus, because I've found I love pretty much every song they release over there. But I'm sure that there's so many more contributors I should be adding as a contact so that I can experience their incredible tunes! I feel like I'm missing out by not having them as one of my contacts.

So who else (that is a regular contributor to MeFi Music) should I be adding as a contact? Please recommend me some contacts for MeFi Music!

MeMu Makes Me Sad

Music pony request - make the MefiMusic home page not crash my browser. :( Flash 10, Firefox 3, Debian 5.0.1, but the real problem is that my machine is over ten years old and wasn't that beefy then. Too many little flash players on one page just brings the browser crashing down. Individual music pages are ok, but the Music home page is not.

If it were possible to opt not to see the flash players on the home page, this would fix it. Similarly, if I could set how many recent posts I could see on the Music home page, this would also fix it, though I'd probably miss a lot of posts.

In the meantime I'm looking at trying to fiddle with adblock to just block the player on that page alone, but it's a pain, especially as I want the same player to work on individual post pages.

Any other suggestions for workarounds gratefully received.

Music pony! Can we get a warning when we're about to navigate away from a page where a MeFi Music track is playing? More than once I've closed a tab while in the middle of a song. Over at 8tracks, if you click on a link that would take you away from a page where a song is playing, it gives you a warning:
Playback will be interrupted. Proceed?

Continue anyway » Open link in a new window »

[ ] Always take this action
(You can change this in your account settings at any time.)
Ideally, this warning would show up not only when you click on a link, but also if you try to close the tab, or if you type in a new url (this may be less possible than the other two instances; I'm not sure).

Is this possible? Is it too intensive a process for our dear, beloved server? Could it be done for the podcast, too?

MetaMovies

The Future of MeFiMusic: Video? Hello there. I'm inquiring into the possibility of incorporating video into MeFiMusic at some point in the foreseeable future. I understand video files are substantially larger than mp3s, and excuse my utter lack of computer knowledge, but is there a way to process them down the way YouTube does? I know MetaFilter's bandwith resources are significantly limited to that of an interweb empire like YouTube's, but it'd be neat to put moving faces to the moving music of our recording mefites. I can see this working with AskMeFi as well, allowing members to record little videos of themselves asking questions and demonstrating their queries with additional visual support.

"Can I make a wedding ring from this?"
"Should I wear this red dress or this green dress to my dreaded High School reunion?"
"What the hell is this weird rash on my ass?"

Reading through the questions on AskMeFi, I can see that many of them would benefit from a feature of this sort. Be that as it may, I see the contra argument as well, for who in their right mind wants to see an assrash. Regardless, am I in the realm of MeFantasy here? If it's impossible to actualize today, is this something we may see in say, three years from now?

Broadcast rights for Mefi Music?

Inspired by a comment in the thread for chococat's very excellent song "In The Rain" I was wondering, for those of us with access to campus radio stations, is there a way to broadcast some of the tunes from MeFi Music? Is it basically a matter of contacting the original poster and asking them for permission?

Metafilter Music makes its debut.

It's here! MetaFilter Music.

I've uploaded most of the files people have sent me (I'll be adding more all day today). Lots of great stuff already. Electronica, rock, folk, it's all there. It uses the Andromeda streaming/download server which lets you download songs, stream folders/songs, and lets you make playlists on the fly.

Oh, I also added a new MetaTalk category to discuss music.metafilter.com-related stuff here.
