Asking for a friend!

Are you in prison? Are any Mefites currently incarcerated, but nonetheless participating in the site? I'd be curious how you access the site and what your imprisoned Mefi experience is like.

If anyone would rather not respond in the thread, I'd still like to hear from you via MeMail and can repost your comments with your permission.

Note: this thread is not about one-time Mefites who may be imprisoned and now incommunicado (like Hoder?).

Who makes up the mefi audience?

Who are the people who make up metafilter? The longer I lurk on metafilter, the more I am amused by the people in this community.

I'm a member of several online communities. Most of them have the same demographics....on surface. Educated, middle or upper middle class, ages 20-40, and liberal. However, I find this community completely different from the rest. I find the same topics here that I find on the other message boards, but the type of replies are not similar. I am trying to pin down why.

To tell the truth besides the traits I listed above, I don't know what kind of people make up metafilter. I'm curious which groups are over and under-represented here on metafilter. An example, people by occupation. And I am very very curious if there are any similarities in childhoods lived by regulars on this site. I guess that's the education major in me.

But anyway I'm just curious what kind of lives people on here live once the computers are shut off. It's kind of difficult since most of the regulars don't post much about their lives.

Users are people too

I'm tired of the word 'user'. can we use 'members' or 'readers' instead when referring to them e.g. "X users favourited this" etc? i know its just semantics, but users are people too and as a member of the design profession the choice of words worries me sometimes. besides who wants to be known as a 'user'? Yah, this is a pet peeve

I swear I remember a way to find users from a specific locale- but I can't seem to conjure up a search-string that will do what I want, which is to find users in and around Munich and Berlin, Germany.

The rasion d'etre of my search is that I've found some 1500 photographs I took there 30 years ago, and I'd like some assistance in determining locations/stories.

Logboy injured in Iraq

One of our longtime mefi members - Logboy - was recently redeployed to Iraq. When I noted in one of his comments that he was on leave, I bookmarked his weblog and was shocked and saddened to read that he was injured by an IED. Damn.

My friend and I were discussing MeFi and came to a point of contention when estimating the number of new users MeFi receives per day. My guess was 5 to 10, his was 25 or more. Perhaps this argument can be laid to rest here. How many new users does MeFi average per day?

Searching Profile Pages

Is there a way to search user profile pages for certain words? I was trying to add a 'MetaGame' keyword to my page for use by geekily Mefites to match up in online games (MMORPGs, Live!, Nintendo Wifi, etc) for some constructive combat from the safety of our Mom's basement.

Am I missing something obvious, or is the a pony that could be coaxed to life?

MetaFilter Members In Iraq

Are there any members who are serving or have served in Iraq? Any members who live, or have constant contact with someone who lives, in Iraq? Because of noobs (myself included), the sky is falling and trends clearly show that metafilter is getting rapidly out of control!!
