Can you make an animated presentation? Want to meme to save lives?

I have expertise relevant to contagion/spread. I feel like there's one aspect of this that is not well-understood by the general public and if understood could persuade people to be more effective in their social distancing. I would like to make some sort of video/animation meme to put out there. Can you help? [more inside]

Most eponysterical post or comment

After seeing this post appear just now, are there other good recent examples of eponysterical posts or comments? The definition in the Mefi Wiki and Urban Dictionary, a 2007 Meta on the origin of the term which is a fun read, a 2005 Meta on such posts and comments and the old list compiled by scarabic.

Featuring MeFi's own MetaFilter

The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress has announced the creation of the library's Web Cultures Web Archive Collection. Archived sites of note run the gamut from Urban Dictionary to ¡Cuánto cabrón! to creepypasta to MeFi's own Metafilter. [h/t]

This strange meme. Baffles me. Please explain.

I've seen this 3-phrase trend go around the blue recently, e.g. in the title of this post and in various comments I can no longer find. Can someone please tell me what it means and where it comes from?

MetaFilter naming culture and conventions

This post got me thinking about Metafilter and screen names: why is MeFi unlike other websites? [more inside]

Please help me collect some meta MeTa Data data. Ta! –Me.

Hi Everybody! I'm trying to come up with a "MeFi glossary of terms / phrases / behaviors" to include in my PhD dissertation about linguistics and MetaFilter. If you could help me with this, that would be fantastic. I'm looking to create a list of the types of things that say to you (or to others) "Oh, that's so MetaFilter!" or "That sounds like something a MeFite would say." This could be anything from the use of a single character to a phrase or meme, to a way of doing things here. If you can think of something to add, please share it in the comments. Thanks! cortex made a meme

Folk music, viral weirdness, and the Ballad of Steven Slater. Josh Millard, known to all and sundry here as cortex, analyses how The Ballad of Steven Slater written by Max Sparber, a.k.a. Astro Zombie, which cortex set to music and performed, went viral. How viral? Wolf Blitzer viral.

Thanks for the lolcat deletion

Today, for the first time, I wished I could favorite a thread deletion justification. "This post was deleted for the following reason: im in ur over-trafficked meme, stating ur ironic deletion raisin" - cortex

This "wins" meme is stupid.

I know I'll probably get a lot of shit for this, like I do for every MeTa thread I post, but can we please please please put a moratorium on the phrase "X wins the thread" and all variants thereof?

Okay now please commence with snark and then others can quote that snark and say "[snarker] wins the thread" hooray!

I for one welcome our new _______ overlords

I was wondering if anyone out there could point out the source of the "I for one welcome our new _______ overlords" meme. I've seen it frequently on Metafilter in many different iterations... I Googled it to no avail. Movie, song, novel, event? Thnx!

Flash Friday bumper sticker.

Yesterday, I saw a bumper sticker on a pickup truck that said, "Flash me, it's Friday!" Is this the origin of Flash Friday on MetaFilter?

Go to Jail Day!

Today is "go to jail" theme day! I hope everyone got their postcards in the mail alerting them to this fact, and I hope you all wore your jail yard stripes to work like we agreed on.

Isn't it funny how an odd trend can pop up out of thin air and start charging?
