I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z. (each search term links to my best guess of the most appropriate page for the query) -A- metafilter ask - humble AskMe, of course. metafilter april fools - a reference to Mefi's annual April Fools joke, nicely summarized at the Mefi wiki. metafilter ayn rand - Mefi's antipathy for the creator of Objectivism is probably best summed up by this 2005 thread commemorating the 100th year since her birth, though there are many other examples. -B- metafilter blog - Perhaps some dedicated AskMe junkies were curious about this "community blog" they keep hearing about? metafilter bradbury all summer in a day - an oddly popular subject for "find this book/movie" AskMe's metafilter bale - referring to the 249-comment post to the Blue about Bale's on-set freakout. metafilter battlestar - the interminable discussion of the BSG finale. metafilter book - the top result is the much-loved "What book is the best introduction to your field?" Is there an index of MeFi memes? I'm pretty new here (so new I'm not sure whether this should go in MeTa or AskMe), but there are a lot of memes I don't quite understand. Has anyone ever created a list of the more popular MeFi memes with explanations and possible origins? I'd love to see one.

Could we have a moratorium on the incessant "FTW"? Posting a comment is not really an entry in a contest, and if it were, surely you would not be the final arbiter. Plus when someone says it I keep imagining some 14 year old jumping around in pajamas, arms flailing about, yelling FTW! FTW!

MetaFilter History

Is there interesting MetaFilter history that newcomers wouldn't know about, but might find interesting? I'm relatively new here, but I always enjoy hearing back-history of social places that people who are new are not privy to. For example, if you join a new group somewhere, there's always an interesting history connected with the participants, including inside jokes, social drama, etc., that the average person joining wouldn't be aware of (I do know there is a place that describes the inside MeFi references). It could be something deep within the archives of MetaFilter (like the discussion thread where Woz showed up), or something that has no paper trail, but makes for interesting lore anyway. I'm not necessarily talking about a "best posts" thread (although it could be related I suppose) as much as the culture and happenings related to the board. What is your best or most interesting story about MetaFilter that the average person on the street wouldn't know about?

I have prepared an FPP about an organization that was recently the subject of a couple Internet memes (and Metafilter threads) that is now being sued by a major international corporation as a result of one of their pranks. Their web site is vague and asks people not to post rumors, but they sent out a number of details to their mailing list, including ways to support them. Would it be unethical for me to post this semi-private information to Metafilter? Could I get them in more trouble with this lawsuit? Half of me feels that Mefites might be willing to contribute to the cause, but the other half wants to be extremely careful.

20 neophytes a day - and I'm one of yesterday's crop. Fresh-faced, clean-skinned...

As a Content Editor at Everything2, I'm intimately acquainted with the stickiness inherent in introducing new people to an online community (especially a content-oriented community, as opposed to activity-, hobby-, or interest-oriented ones). There seems to be a dearth of documentation. I guess this site is pretty self-explanatory, which is refreshing - I've been an E2 user for two and a half years and I still occasionally scratch my big, fat head. Also, after such a long, long time with no new users (I know it was a long time because I spent a long time checking the new user page), you guys must be experiencing something of a shock, too.

Any ideas as to what could be done to ease the transition for newbies and allay the angst, if any, of the old guard?

Feel free to kill this if I'm out of line, long-winded or otherwise. I'm a new at this.

MeFi - NPR connection?

On most days I listen to NPR. At least once a day I read about something on metafilter and moments/hours later there is an NPR story on it; Or the opposite - I listen to a story and then discover a thread covering the exact story, usually with added information and/or related links. I suppose this isn't very exciting. What I'm wondering is if anyone else has had this experience with metafilter converging with other traditional media so seamlessly?

How about a little script that filters out all the "all your base" "jokes" from MeFi posts?
