[RSS PSA] Reminder to update your MetaFilter RSS feeds

Last month, an apparent error in Feedburner caused several of MeFi's legacy RSS feeds to not update for up to a week (at least in my popular feed reader, Feedly). The problem has been fixed -- for now. But it's an important reminder that the Feedburner platform is increasingly unreliable -- if it were ever shut down by Google, the thousands of readers who rely on those feeds to keep up with the site may lose contact without even realizing it. The good news is that the site has a new set of self-hosted feeds that should remain active no matter what Google does. So, if you read the site using an RSS reader, please take a moment to update your reader to the new feeds -- and check the related posts on MetaFilter and Ask MetaFilter for a list of posts you might have missed during the outage.

After the Fire – Metafilter Should Consider Replacing Itself

Once Metafilter has stabilized its finances enough to keep the lights on for at least months, instead of weeks, it will be time to give more thought to the longer term. That longer term should include a “spin-off” to increase the user base. [more inside]

(## new) on sidebar threads (feature request)?

With all the latest political thread links pinned to the MeFi sidebar, it would be helpful to have a (## new) after each sidebar link (just as on regular MeFi posts) which take users to his/her earliest unread comment in each post. [more inside]

Moderators' Day 2016 GET HYPE

Back in 2007 your humble narrator suggested, near the end of a rather challenging day at the comment factory, that we remember and honor June 13th as Moderators' Day henceforth-ish. Please join me in thanking all of our mods - past and present - for the hard and often thankless job they do every day to make MetaFilter one of the best places on the Internet. Thank you cortex, restless_nomad, taz, LobsterMitten, goodnewsfortheinsane, Eyebrows McGee, and vacapinta. Welcome and thank you to our new coder frimble, and special thanks to our moderators emeriti, jessamyn, mathowie, and pb. [more inside]

Planning a MetaFilter survey

Inspired by this post about the XKCD Survey and this comment by The Underwear Monster, I thought it might be fun to do a Big MeFi Survey along the same lines - mostly goofy questions that we can sic our local datawranglers on and see what fun, weird, fascinating things drop out. [more inside]

How do *you* pronounce 'MeFi'?

Hi MeFites. After many years of overthinking a plate of beans, I made a thing! I'm pleased to share my PhD dissertation about MetaFilter with you all. A simple question of how we pronounce our own nickname has unfolded into many years of research. This time spent would not have been as enriching or meaningful to me and to the field of sociolinguistics without the support and enthusiasm of my fellow MeFites. I say I made a thing, but really, you made this. Thank you. [more inside]

Can we get a "Remove from Activity" button on the Mobile site?

I was wondering if it would be possible to get the "Remove from Activity" link added to the Recent Activity page of the Mobile site. Is this something that people would like to have, and if so would it be feasible to implement this feature? [more inside]

Lost comment

I recall a discussion on the blue about the ACA recently wherein someone stated there will be (or may be) a federally managed insurance option available on the exchange in all states. It was portrayed as a back door public, not-for-profit option. I can't find the post now. Anyone have it bookmarked or recall the details of who will be managing the plan and what it will consist of?

Please help me collect some meta MeTa Data data. Ta! –Me.

Hi Everybody! I'm trying to come up with a "MeFi glossary of terms / phrases / behaviors" to include in my PhD dissertation about linguistics and MetaFilter. If you could help me with this, that would be fantastic. I'm looking to create a list of the types of things that say to you (or to others) "Oh, that's so MetaFilter!" or "That sounds like something a MeFite would say." This could be anything from the use of a single character to a phrase or meme, to a way of doing things here. If you can think of something to add, please share it in the comments. Thanks! MeFi iPhone icon unavailable?

Anyone else unable to add a custom MeFi icon webclip to their iPhone home screen? I just get a snapshot of the page, instead of the nice blue MF logo (which was working for me earlier this year.) Why doesn't matthowie have a $200M valuation?

Why is MeFi not part of the social news site boom? Digg, reddit, newsvine, and others are the lucrative hot trend, but MeFi seems to do the same thing better (no Ron Paul spam), smarter, and for longer, and we even have favorites, for those who want voting-like capabilities. So why is MeFi not included with these young whippersnappers? And why are they not learning from MeFi's evolved model of light moderation, talk pages, and strong self-policing?

Too popular for MeFi?

What's the etiquette on posting stuff you've just seen at somewhere like BoingBoing? So far this morning, there's been 2 posts that appeared on BB in the last week. I saw them when they first came up there, and thought, "hey, this is neat, people on Mefi would like this," but then decided against posting them here. I know that sometimes one can encounter a flurry of "Xfilter!!!!" comments by doing something like that.

Should we actively avoid posting things we've seen on other, highly popular link-oriented blogs?
