If your website is full of assholes, it's your fault

Mefite[1] Anil Dash[2] writes[3]:
"Simply learning from disciplines like urban planning, zoning regulations, crowd control, effective and humane policing, and the simple practices it takes to stage an effective public event, we can come up with a set of principles to prevent the overwhelming majority of the worst behaviors on the Internet." Examples? Why Metafilter, of course, (as well as Stack Exchange sites, of which he is a board member). # You should have real humans dedicated to monitoring and responding to your community.

"...Sites that do this, like MetaFilter and Stack Exchange sites (disclosure, I'm a proud board member of Stack Exchange) get good results. Those that don't, don't...."

# Your site should have accountable identities.

"No, people don't have to use their real names, ... one of my favorite methods of identity: Persistent pseudonyms. Let users pick a handle that is attached to all of their contributions in a consistent way where other people can see what they've done on the site. Don't make reputation a number or a score, make it an actual representation of the person's behavior..."

# You should have the technology to easily identify and stop bad behaviors.

"If you have a community that's of decent size, it can be hard for even a sufficient number of moderators to read every single conversation thread. So a way for people to flag behavior that violates guidelines, and a simple set of tools for allowing moderators to respond quickly and appropriately, are a must-have so that people don't get overwhelmed."

# You should make a budget that supports having a good community, or you should find another line of work.

[ . . . ]

Because if your website is full of assholes, it's your fault. And if you have the power to fix it and don't do something about it, you're one of them.

Why MetaFilter is Awesome

Why MetaFilter is Awesome And Why the World Needs to Know Since I joined MetaFilter recently after a month or so of lurking, I'm becoming increasingly amazed by it's awesomeness. I'm greatly uplifted by these examples of the greatness of humankind. I'm grateful. A bit high on endorphines, actually. And I think many other people would like to feel like that too, if they knew how.
I mean, without needles and stuff.

So! Could you kindly please:
a) provide links to more such MetaFilter Awesomeness cos' I'm hooked and I need my fix
b) weigh in on the idea of creating a permanent repository of MetaFilter Awesomeness so that any passerby can appreciate it
c) and/or tell me this has been proposed previously by many a breathless newcomer and point me to the relevant discussion where my idea was crushed ruthlessly by logic and reason long before it was born.

Upsetting the plate of beans.

I miss the old metafilter. I liked it when lame FPPs sometimes got no comments.
I liked it when you still had to write "email's in profile".
I liked it when profile pics didn't have to be 140x140 pixels.
I liked it when we LOLed at cats in scanners more often than cats with captions.
I liked it when we were still proud to be accused of having a blazecock pileon. (The concept, not the person)
Most of all I liked quonsar.

I am hugely supportive of the work that goes into maintaining the site, and I know that the site is bound to evolve over time. However the many changes made in the last year seem, to me at least, to be insidiously eroding what, for want of a better phrase, has been called our culture. The last week in particular has been tumultuous. Is it possible to have greater consultation with users before implementing pony requests and other changes?

Hello, Radios!

I'll be doing a short, on-air, phoned in interview with Ronald Jenkees of youtube fame this Wednesday starting at 3pm (eastern standard time). You can listen to it live here. There will be a recording on that site shortly thereafter. If there are any questions the MeFi crowd would like me to ask, post them.

Please help me name my mix CD about kittens.

The AskMe guidelines make a simple-sounding request: 'Please avoid "help me name my kitten/computer/website" and "help me make a mix CD" questions.' But these kinds of questions are posted fairly frequently, and seldom seem to be deleted. How many of these kinds of questions are posted, and what proportion of those are removed? If the guideline isn't being enforced because people love the name-my-whatever questions, maybe it would be better to just get rid of the guideline. Alternately, if the guideline is to remain, maybe it would be better to make it more prominent, and/or to delete a larger proportion of the questions which break it.

Why isn't this APOD post considered to be a double, triple or quadruple?
Let's define news- and politics filter

"if you can craft a definition of news and politics related threads that anyone can read and judge their pending post against, and it's so clear and concise that no one would second guess it and wonder why their news or politics related thread was removed, I'd be happy to add it. Because right now, there's no way I could make a black & white, water-tight set of guidelines for discouraging and deleting political and news posts. I don't keep them around for the traffic, I keep them around because there's no easy way to say what should stay and what should go, as six years of metatalk have already covered." -mathowie
Metafilter bumpersticker sighting.

Another curiousity question (and no idea if this is completely inappropriate.)

I was driving behind a Toyota SUV earlier today in Maryland (New Hampshire Avenue, southbound, at around 445-5pm, after Cloverly, but before Valley Brook Rd) and I found myself staring at a MetaFilter bumper sticker! I've posted a picture in the comments, with the license plate number blacked out.

A) I'm curious as anything to know who this was.
B) Where can I get an awesome bumper sticker to put on my car?

PS: I was driving a black 98 Honda Civic with my headlights on and a bunch of crap hanging from the rearview, if whoever it is wants to know what car I was.

(If this is completely taboo and un-mefi, please delete.)

Why Is There So Much Spam In Our Wiki?

I know this has been brought up before, but I believe that it's frustrating enough to deserve being brought up again. Why is the wiki so spam-ridden?

Every time I go to look at it, at least 75% of the things I click on are spam or "DeletedPage: This page was WikiSpam. "

Seriously, If nobody's going to put in the effort to keep the wiki spam-free, why even bother to have it, especially now that we have a FAQ?

Now, when I try to use that address, it automatically reverts to http://www.metafilter.com and that address is blocked by my company's "Smartfilter" as "chat/forums". I can't read threads at work anymore and I'm pretty sad about that.

Feature question (not necessarily a request) -

The ability to edit/remove a post after you have submitted it. Is this something that we Don't Have, or something that we Don't Want?

Buggy user search results

Frequently when I do a user search, they don't come up. If they do, it's because their user name is somewhere in the text, like "iconomy" at the bottom of this user page. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?
