This plate of beans, it vibrates?

In a recent thread about Metafilter memes, I used the phrase "Beanplate Insane" to describe my own sense of frustration with certain over-indulged inside jokes on the site. It occurred to me that it would only be appropriate to have an exclusive inside phrase to go along with those exclusive inside jokes, so I submitted "Beanplate Insane" to the editors of the Urban Dictionary, who officially approved the listing a couple days ago and have now posted the term with my Metafilter-specific definition.

Does anybody have that comic fandango_matt made with the boy scouts and the anthropomorphic animals explaining metafilter? All the references/links to it lead to 404s and dead ends. [more inside]

Enter all your responses into your copy of the Problem Book

Meta Filter, [1973-75] is an interactive console, two participants sit on either side and look at a series of neutral images of people, people as individuals or people in relationship to others on the small screen in front of them. [more inside]

Browser/OS stats

Question (and I may have missed where this is): Metafilter is a geeky place - out of a certain curiosity, is there somewhere to get an OS/browser/whatnot stats breakdown for visitors? If not, that would be cool (even if merely in the form of a one-off FPP).

Parsing vs. derail

This request for sources on a comment I made is valid, but I don't want to derail the thread. Could it be appropriate to put sources and specifics in here, and let the thread continue on the content of the post?

The Blogfather

On the eve of MetaFilter's twelfth birthday, the Willamette Week sits down with Matt Haughey to talk about his roots at the dawn of the blogging age, the value of lifestyle work vs. captaining industry, and the future of community blogs in an online landscape increasingly dominated by Twitter, Facebook, and mobile browsing.

LIVE CHAT! YES, YOU TOO CAN CHAT WITH REAL! LIVE! (SEXY?) MEFITES!

Didn't see this in the FAQ: is there an online venue where one can chat live with fellow Mefites? I know there's nothing official sponsored by the site, but what's the most popular of any home-brewed solutions?

Lend me your ears

I just set up a group for MeFi members over at NeighborGoods, a virtual lending library of "stuff" site. In the continuing tradition of not reinventing the wheel around here, I'm opting to use an existing service to help people share their belongings with other members, so have at it, sign up and list your things. Is there a MediaFilter somewhere?

Every so often I see questions about how we should treat spoilers for ongoing TV shows like Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, etc. What I don't see is any posts actually dedicated to those things. Where are we discussing current TV that spoilers are an issue?

!click and reload ...

About the (fabulous) 'X new comments, show' function: I can't say enough good things about this, as it makes following long threads so easy compared to the old system of having to reload. But why not take it just a small step further - instead of making us click to load them, why not just have the script go ahead and load the new comments when they are detected? (Maybe a user preference?)

Why do you participate on MetaFilter?

So why do you participate here on MetaFilter? Is it because you "have a serious and unhealthy addiction to the internet, perhaps due to issues of procrastination and life avoidance, and ... metafilter is like a group of enablers in encouraging that kind of psychodynamic?" Or, perchance, do you visit frequently for some other reason(s)?

The forum at the end of the universe

"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Starship Titanic website sat a specious message board with posts by the senior crew of the fictional ship. This is not its story." The Economist blog "Babbage" explores (in decidedly Adamsian style) the fascinating story of the Starlight Lines forum and its "accidental" community, as told by Mefi's own Yoz Grahame in this truly epic comment from last December. Has the average number of posts increased?

Has the average daily count of front page posts increased over the last five years? When I joined back in 2006, I seem to remember the average being something like 23-25 posts a day. Now it seems to be about 33-36 posts a day. Do the numbers back me up? Or am I imagining things?
