Pinning/sidebarring mod posts?

Request: could important posts about the site be pinned to the top of MeTa for a little while? Or sidebarred? Or something? They tend to get lost in the shuffle, and then you have those "Hey, whatever happened to [whatever]?" posts that get closed. I guess these kinds of posts (like the changes to the favorites system) aren't made all that often, but when they are, it would awesome if they stuck around in a visible place for a few days. For example: I honestly thought the favorites system was broken when I first noticed the change, and it wasn't until I saw a closed thread with a link to the original that I realized it wasn't. I can't be the only one! or CAN I?

What were the mods like (on Metafilter) before they were mods? Please point me to notable posts by Jessamyn, Cortex, et al from when they were just some schmo on MeFi like you or me. This query inspired by Matt's blog post reflecting on 10 years of Metafilter.

Flag flag flag

What is the mod policy on noting when comments have been removed? I've seen jessamyn and others say "cleaned up the thread a bit, stop being fuckwads, kthx", etc, but it appears not to happen for one-off offenders. Is it just something you do if you're removing shrapnel left and right?

This comment is clearly referring to a comment now deleted.

No big deal; I know most housekeeping is done under the radar and mentioning every single deletion would clutter up posts pretty quickly, but I was just curious.

Mods, would you ever re-initiate contact with anonymous?

Do the mods ever ask an anonymous questioner for follow-up info, or does the anonymous asker always initiate the follow-up process? I'm just curious. Often the first few answers to an anon question will say "We can't answer this until you clarify X." When no follow-up appears, someone will eventually point out that anonymous can email a mod to have them post an anonymous follow-up about X, in case they didn't know. More time passes, people get tired of waiting for clarification, and finally they start trying to enumerate the possible values of X and giving answers for each possibility. It's kind of crazy, and it leaves me wishing someone could poke anonymous and say, "Hey, people are trying to help you, but they need some more info!"

I'm definitely not suggesting that mods should take responsibility for babysitting anonymous threads. You guys have enough to do already. I'm just curious whether you have ever or would ever contact an anonymous poster to ask for more info, rather than waiting for them to contact you. What might make you do so?

Can we please have an automatic deletion and/or penalty box for posts that get flagged for breaking guidelines by many users at times when no mod is online? I'm thinking of the Spammer that posted at 1:30 AM this morning, and how much I want him to be trampled to death by a pony. I know any automagic deletion system could potentially be gamed to censor worthy threads, but presumably a system could be set up where the mods could override any deletion in a fairly timely fashion. Plus any clickthrough on SPAM is too much in my opinion.

when mods post dupes!

um, i don't really know what to do about this. and i've got no general prob with the mods. but, as you can see, one of the mods has posted a question that has been asked before.
so . . . what happens now? does it get deleted? does the original get deleted? does the whole thing get ignored? are these even the droids that anyone is looking for?

. . . just asking . . .

Unsure what to do

I'm writing a post in which I'm making an offer of direct help, and I'm really not sure whether that offer is a good idea (I'm not sure whether it's a good idea whether to make the offer, and if it is a good idea, I'm not sure that it's a good idea to post the offer where others can see it). It's nothing illegal, I think, and certainly nothing wrong, if the circumstances are what they appear to be, but I have no way of knowing if circumstances are what they appear to be, and if they're not, what I'm offering to do could be a very bad idea. Anyway, I obviously don't want to post any more specifics, so who can I ask what is appropriate in this situation?

Our Distinguished Admins

In this thread, cribcage mentions that " ... blogrrrl has no way of identifying jessamyn (or mathowie, for that matter) as an admin ... ", which seems on its face to be silly because everyone knows that, of course. Right?

Anyway, it got me to thinking that perhaps Matt and Jess' remarks could be highlighted with something to indicate that they're the admins. Maybe a different color, a gold star a'la Stan Chin that's clickable and leads to a page with email/AIM/contact info? Something along those lines could help the filthy five-dolla noobs with their acclimatization to the site.

Just a thought.

Could we have a new category for MetaTalk for Oopsie! One day I swear I'll actually learn to type slowly enough to coordinate the output from my fingers with the output from my brain, or maybe just shut up, but in the meantime I've done something amazing even for me. In this thread, I mangled the anchor tag in my comment badly enough that I can't link to it here and refreshing the page will crash my browser. It's probably going to make messes for others, as well, or I'd just hide my red face in shame. Any friendly, helpful moderators looking for gratitude?

Moderating Uploads

Moderation
I've been working on the image upload part of the site, and realized there's no way to limit what type of content gets uploaded.

So I've come to the conclusion that the only way to keep out off-topic scans & stories (like porn or pictures of your cat) is to induce a moderation process. Pretty much anything resembling a story along with an image of something that looks like a ticket stub will get through and posted (guidelines will be posted along with the site so this is clear).

Do you have any objections to such a setup? It would induce a bit of lag, but I don't know if submissions would be that substantial on a day-to-day basis. Also, I'll set it up so I get an email the instant something is submitted and after a simple glance at it, will approve it with a single click.

I know metafilter has always been wide open, but since this site is starting from scratch, I don't think it will affect the growth too much. Do you think it's a good or bad idea? why? Is there possibility that human intervention (i.e. me or some other possible moderators) would spoil the growth? Or would it ensure a quality site?
