nothing personal but if this isn't hypothetical-filter, it's "help me break the law" filter which isn't much better. Come on, this is a great AskMe thread! Jessamyn, if we'd applied that rubric for deletion in the past, we'd be without such gems as this Best of Metafilter answer.

Ask.Metafilter is over 5 years old now, with volumes of suggestions and helpful ideas. philosophistry sorted through the years of posts categorized as Human Relations and Work & Money, and created ranked listings of the books people recommended the most often: Human Relations, Work & Money.
The status blog says that new hardware is on the way. Is this putting a financial strain on MetaFilter? Should we take up a collection? I don't know whether this is even needed, but I'm sure there are plenty of people here (myself included) who would be happy to chip in a bit on paypal to help pay for our shiny new hardware that keeps the bad guys out and the sites chugging along. I'm certainly not flush with cash, but I like to contribute what I can to make sure the things that matter to me can stick around.

Self Link on the Blue

55335 on the blue is a self-link (I'm deliberately not linking to it), anyone know how to contact a mod? Are they asleep? It's especially irritating because it's a self-link to a crap site about "marketing and making money on the web". Also, how about a feature that allows a user to self-revoke posts for a certain amount of time (like 10 minutes) if they realize or learn it was a bad idea.

Is it acceptable to offer an incentive for a successful answer in AskMe?

Is it considered in bad taste or a breach of policy to offer a prize or reward to whomever successfully solves a tech problem I'm tempted to post in askme? I've tried various customer support avenues and have had no luck so far.

If it is acceptable, what sort of incentive would be appropriate? Money strikes even me in poor taste. Any ideas, or should I just scrap the reward avenue?

MetaFilter Fundraising for Fun

Announcing the new MetaFilter Fundraising for Fun project. dios and rothko/AlexReynolds have agreed to let you guys vote with your dollars, for charity. Throw some cash into the till for the guy you want to take a break for a week, and in the end it all goes to Creative Commons' fundraiser. Think of it as a charity dunk tank: you put down five bucks to toss a few at the guy you love to hate. It'll run for a week, so let's make the fun last.

Matt Haughey has shown tremendous compassion by rejecting a large revenue stream for the sake of this major Internet community.
MoneyFilter for MetaFilter

MoFi4MeFi (MoneyFilter for MetaFilter): Last September, Matt asked the following: What if I killed [MeFi] sometime in the future, and brought it back, but you had to pay a small membership fee or some other 'high' barrier to entry? That'd keep the crowd small, manageable, and only those that really cared to discuss things would contribute. Would that make things better? Worse?

The discussion that followed did not necessarily address the question (a few positively responded to a subscriber-based MeFi). Maybe, this idea needs to be reviewed again. [more inside]

So how about a Pledge Drive?

So how about a Pledge Drive? My local NPR station is begging for money again, and I was thinking - you know I'd rather give my $1/day (why that's not even enough for coffee) to MeFi. Currently the donation kitty is at $3,597. I bet we can get that up to $4,500 in no time. What do you say?
