Hit Me, Hit Me, HIT ME with Your Viral Stick!

I Wanna Take A Ride On Your Media Stick! Inspired by this post, and the ongoing talk in the thread about "image control" etc.

I'm also reading And Then There's This, by Bill Wasik right now (he started the whole Flash Mob trip awhile back..), which is all about the life-cycle of viral stories in pop culture. He also name-checks Metafilter a few times in this book, for those keeping score.

I'm curious to hear how media/pop culture/viral memes fits in the metaverse for folks, what effects if any it's had on the way you see the media, or pop culture or yourself.

What's going on for you when you endorse something disposable in the culture, whether it's a meme, a pop star, a diet, a Three Wolf Moon shirt. What does "owning one's image" mean to you specifically if what's happening to you might be a passive receiving of media static?

In what ways has your life over the years changed from the introduction of viralism in the culture, or the speed of what you take in through it?

Big question? Sure. Fun topic? OH HELLS YES. Release the hounds!

Winter MeFiSwap!

You listen to good music. You pick some of it out, and you put it in a certain order, and you listen to your mix all the time. It's good! It sounds good, too good to keep to yourself. So you burn 5 copies of your mix to CD and you put 'em in the mail. Soon 5 different discs containing 5 different mixes from 5 other people appear in your mailbox, and this is good because you're tired of listening to the mix you made and some new tunes from cool MeFites is just the right thing.
MeFi Swap Winter 2009 is open for sign-ups. To sign up, send me an email containing your MeFi username and your mailing address. tediseasy [at] gmail [doot] com.

I think these work best if some guidelines are set out right at the beginning:

We usually swap music CD-Rs. If you want to swap data discs or tapes or something and enough are interested, I can set up a side-swap.

If you signed up to participate last time but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again. Maximum pukka is attained through 100% participation. If you sign up to participate this time, do so with the full intention of mailing out at least 5 mix CDs. You may be asked to mail overseas (and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail packages to foreign countries). Communication is important so if you can't get your mixes out by the deadline (see below), let me or the other members of your swapset know.

Deadlines, here's some schedule:
Sign-ups close Sunday, December 20th, 2009.
Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter.
The mailing deadline is pretty far off, considering the holiday season and general craziness: Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

If you would like to be in two swapsets (mailing 10 copies of your mix out) or if you have any other specific requests or restraints, please include them in your sign-up email.

Jeff Buckley sings on a song in Music. I kid you not. And it is awesome. Wanted to point it out, as otherwise people might miss it, even though I know this makes everything I have ever contributed to Music seem pale and small like a wet and lonely child.

Music pony requests: Add date posted for each track in Most (Favorited|Playlisted) Tracks of All Time and increase the length of these lists. The 'Most' lists are great, but I've already listened to most of those tracks (they're mostly older). Few tracks are going to get favorited more than the current lowest-number-of-favorites track, which has 50 favorites. SO THE PONIES: (1) more tracks so newer things can show up on that list (2) dates so it's easier to find the new stuff.

MeFiSwap Summer 09 Mailing Deadline Reminder - Aug 15!

MeFiSwap Summer '09 reminder thread — Mailing deadline is Saturday, August 15! Hey swappers!

This is just a friendly reminder from your local swap organizer that mixes need to be mailed out no later than August 15. (You should also have a fresh email reminder from me...my last group communique until next swap.)

If for whatever reason you can't make that deadline, please either email your swapset to let them know or alert me so I can pass on the news. I know I don't need to remind you that flakers are derided and loathed to the extreme.

Questions? I'll be around this thread to answer them, or send them in via email. My email address is in my profile.

Where the hell did I put my (piano) keys?

I'm looking for an old post about learning the piano, or possibly learning to play an instrument in general. I don't remember if it was on the green, blue or grey, but I do remember that a MeFite posted in the thread about having completed a book or chapter or some such thing about learning the piano. It was interesting reading, and I'd like to find it again. He/she offered to send a PDF of the material to anyone interested. I've lost the PDF, and I'd like to get another copy for a friend who's learning the piano. I've searched through AskMe for all the piano/instrument-related posts, and I couldn't find the link I'm thinking of. I think it must have been posted at least two or three years ago.

Any ideas? Thanks, all.

MeFiSwap Summer 2009

MeFiSwap Summer '09
Believe it or not, it's been about that long. Let's mail each other good music. I think these work best if some guidelines are set out right at the beginning:

Email me at tediseasy asper@nd gmail stop. com if you would like to participate. Please include your mailing address and your username. If you would prefer not to use email, memail me. However, things are much simpler from an organizational standpoint if I can use the robust features afforded by email rather than barebones memail, so email is preferred.

Sign-up deadline is 2 weeks from today, July 12th.

If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to set up side swaps for tapes or whatever (how many of you cut vinyl?), but let's stick to swapping CDs for the most part and mixes of music for sure (not teddy bears or tshirts or wevs).

If you signed up to participate last time but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again. If you sign up to participate this time, do so with the full intention of mailing out at least 5 mix CDs. You may be asked to mail overseas (and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail packages to foreign countries). Communication is important; if you can't get your mixes out by the deadline (see below), let me or the other members of your swapset know.

Once sign-ups are closed, everyone will be broken up into swapsets. Swapsets are ideally 6 members big, so each swapper will mail out 5 copies of their mix. If you're in the mood to mail out more (and receive more in return!), lemme know in the email.

There's generally a deadline set for mailing swaps out, so let's set that to Saturday, August 15th.

As usual, I feel like I'm leaving a lot out of this, so if you have any questions I'll be skulking around here all day and/or email me.

Artists' control of their output at Mefi Music

I have a fairly radical idea, concerning MeFi Music, which I'd like to run up the flagpole. You know, see if anyone salutes it. The idea is this: people who submit songs to MetaFilter Music would retain the option of removing them at any time, much like people can do with their videos at YouTube, or the soundfiles that music bloggers make available for downloading through their blogs. This would encourage more people, I believe, to post music here. Why do I think this? Well...

Musicians may want to share their output on a temporary basis, as opposed to forever, for any number of reasons. One is that they may want to put something out there that's not "finished", in order to get a little feedback, 15 minutes of fame, whatever, but they might not want that music sitting there on the web for all time. Another reason might be that the song he/she posted to MeFiMu is suddenly up for consideration by some label (and that might include a self-release by the artist himself) that doesn't want a free version sitting there on the net. Or maybe, hey, come the light of day, that masterpiece that sounded so good after your third bowl (I'm talking cereal, of course) isn't something you want to have people listening to after you're dead. Or before. Or ever.

I also think that having such a system in place might increase the listenership at Mefi Music. Why? Well, take the model of music blogs: people know to stop by regularly to their favorite music blogs to see what's on offer for listening or downloading, because they know it won't be there forever. If people think something is going to be there forever, no risk of missing anything, they're often less likely to visit regularly, and are actually often likely to forget about it. It's not necessarily a good thing, therefore, for people to know that everything will always be there at MeFiMu.

Now, chances are, the majority of posts to MeFiMu would be there forever, and that's great. But wouldn't it be a good thing, for the reasons I've outlined above, if the people who generously provide the free music to MeFiMu could also have the option of removing it, if they want to or need to?

Cross-posting sub-sites?

Is it ok to cross-post a music question you have posted in AskMe to Music? I couldn't find a verdict on this by searching so I figured I'd ask in MeTa so the answer would be available for posterity.

I recently posted a question to AskMe that is musical in nature. Can I also post to Music asking the same question? Can I post to Music asking users to weigh in on the AskMe question or does it need to be a complete re-post?

Can we add 8tracks as a social service for the profiles? I bet a lot of mefites <s>muxtape</s> 8track it up, and it's adding more social features to the profiles all the time.
I added it to the wiki page as well.

Sharing is caring.

Music for Recovery

Looking for mixtapes (Hey, I'm old. And it still sounds better than mix-cds). Okay, I'm going to be shameless in soliciting here. I'm leaving for surgery in less than a week and I'm starting to be scared shirtless. I'm going it alone, and I'm going all the way from Seattle to Belgium. It's exciting, but scary and I really need more music. I love random mixes, and I've found most of my favorite music through friends who put tapes together for me at one time or another.

I would offer a music exchange, but my tastes just aren't cool enough or interesting enough I'm afraid. So I'm offering postcards from Belgium for anyone who's interested in helping a sister out. I like everything from classical to country. Really, everything. And I can totally pay postage. The only catch is that I'm leaving next week. If you're in Europe I can give you the address of the hotel where I'll be staying. If you're in the US I'd be happy to paypal you postage money. Or I can give you webspace to upload music and I can burn it myself.

I know this is totally weird, but some music would make me really happy.

Mixing MefiMusic Tracks... Just had the ultimate experience playing CarrotAdventure's remix of Joni Mitchells' Both Sides Now with wasteland's hyperluminous quasar (starting quasar at 2:30 into mitchell). Anybody else had success playing 2 or more MefiMusic tracks at the same time to great effect?
