Metasocial

Didn't there used to be a webpage that showed you all the Mefites' social-networking-website accounts that we have listed in their profiles? Or something? Does this still exist? If so, where is it? Sorry to be lame, but I've tried searching around, to no avail.

meetup for career networking?

Do people here do meetups that focus on career networking? Having never been to a regular meetup, I guess those might function the same way -- "networking" is a pretty broad activity. But since I got laid off recently I'm thinking how it might be good to meetup with Metafilter people in my area (philly) strictly for the purpose of career search -- attended by people who want to help people get connected with new jobs, and of course people who are looking for new jobs.

So what I'm asking is, is there enough difference between meetups as they currently happen, and career-networking meetups (for lack of a better term), that it would be useful to try to organize one of the latter?

More specifically: anybody in Philly interested in a networking meetup? Separate from the regular one that's upcoming?

We've got a network - let's use it!

More jobs, please! This is a request to everyone to surround the Jobs page with white light. Please post more jobs and more kinds of jobs. It would be nice to see the utility of this area grow. My ulterior motive: I love jobs, and I'm often halfway in the job market, but I'm not a web designer or database administrator. It seems like at least 80% of the jobs that get posted here aim at that market. And yet the MetaFilter userbase is not made up exclusively of tech workers. Where are all the library jobs? Education jobs? Social service jobs? Small-business jobs? Media jobs? Postings for these are few and far between.

This is a great pool of people to fish in - many willing to relocate, experienced, and skilled. I try to pass on interesting jobs in my field, but I'll admit I'm nowhere near consistent about it and only tend to do it if it's already cut-and-pasteable. It would be great if there were more kinds of jobs posted here more often from more sectors. Even if that means everyone who has never posted a job posts one that becomes available in their workplace or field this year, that would increase the offerings. That's all - thanks.

Social networking in meatspace.

I know the new social networking trends around here are stirring controversy, but I think there's room at metafilter for one more! I'd like to see a place to announce a less-than-meet-up and ask who's-going-to-be-at-local-event? One common thread in ask.me seems to be "how to meet like-minded people in my town?" Also, periodically, people come to metatalk, asking if anyone around here is going to be at a particular upcoming event in their town. I think we could kill both birds with a centralized space (like, for instance, last.fm has for local shows) to say "Hey, metafilter! I'm going to be at the Impossibly Cool Band show on Friday." or "I'm going to the lecture on sustainable architecture at Local Art Museum tonight." or whatever and "Is anyone else going who might want to go together?"

I have thus far enjoyed myself every time I've met up with a mefi in the real world, and I'd appreciate a way to do it more often. I guess another page (meet.me!) might seem bloated to many people and perhaps it is just unwieldy and unnecessary, but I can't be the only person who'd like to see it.

Two requests: sorting threads and social linking!

Two requests: sort threads by number-of-favorites, and a bit of social linking in profiles. Ability to sort threads by number of favorites -- pretty simple. The Star Simpson thread is a good example of when, after coming in late in the game, I'd like to weed out 595 of the comments and read the ones that people like the most.

Social linking in the profile: I'd love to visit someone's profile and see what type of interaction I've had with that person. For instance, did JoeBlow answer one of my AskMe questions? Tell me which one -- show me the history I've had with this person.

That's all.

Sorry about the brief outage today

Sorry about the brief outage today; the networking equipment at this end of the T1 had a seizure, apparently, and needed to be restarted in order to get things back in order. Makes no sense to me (or to the networking gurus at my ISP), but there you have it.
