Fundraising in the wake of the NY gay marriage vote There was much outrage and hurt feelings in the wake of gay marriage being voted down in New York yesterday. Many of us were asking for a place to donate money to purchase advertising. It might not be much, but I think a lot of us just wanted to do something. No one stepped up to act as treasurer, so I figured I would volunteer. The service ChipIn was mentioned in the thread, and that seems like decent service to use, as there are no fees, and the donation totals are visisble. If people feel it is a good idea, and there is still interest, I will set an account up there. In regards to accountability, I mostly just have my reputation to offer. I run a non-profit LGBTTQ movies series up in Canada (and other projects). Given the scope of our resources, I imagine that Google advertisements might be a worthwhile investment, but I will leave that up to the hivemind here to decide. I am only offering to act as treasurer. As someone who is quite removed from the districts, nay state, nay country at hand, I feel the specific decisions should come from those more directly affected.

So, I heard about the punk band Fucked Up from this post, and I'm excited to be going to the show today. Who else is going? Want to meet up? It's free and it sounds like it's going to be a good time. I've even heard rumors of free booze. I'm sure a few Mefi punk fans will be there so why don't we hang out outside of the internet, it's fun to meet new people and listen to punk rock. What time will you be there? I'll be there around 4 or 5. I look like Jesus and I'll be sporting my (almost) metafilter-blue fleece shirt. Let's get fucked up!

Hey New York, let's meetup. How's September 6th in Williamsburg? I've read much hullabaloo about the frequency of NYC meetups, but I didn't see any on the horizon. Is Williamsburg too out of the way for you Manhattanites? Lovely Harefield Road, off the Graham Ave stop, has lots of seating and an excellent beer selection, if that sweetens the deal.

Anyone mentions "gibson" they get to buy a round.

Shall we ~~play a game~~ meet up at the last HOPE? Logistics:

The con starts Friday July 18, 10am and runs through Sunday evening.
It takes place at The Hotel Pennsylvania on 7th Ave and 32nd Street.
Preregistration is $75 for three days.
Mefi's Own^TM asavage is a featured presenter (Sunday, 2pm), but there are plenty of other interesting ones.
Midtown is sort of a desert; suggestions for venue are most welcome.

I know $75 is way too steep for a "normal" meetup. I'm hoping there are some mefites that would be going anyway and would enjoy a drink or two (or, let's be honest, twelve). Alternatively I'm open to being hijacked and having an outside-the-con meetup in the same general area.

I'm going to be in NYC for a conference the weekend of April 4th/5th--anyone up for a meetup on the Friday or Saturday evening? I know this is following hot on the heels of the meetup proposed by Del Far the previous weekend, but I'll be juuuuusst missing that one, as I arrive in New York City for a weeklong conference on April 1st. Drat! However, if there's anyone who can't make the one on the 28th/29th (or doesn't mind back-to-back meetup gaiety) I'd love to get together with other Mefites on the evening of Friday, April 4th, or Saturday the 5th. (Spec80 has said she's available that weekend. Yay!) Also, I'm not familiar enough with New York pubs or bars to confidently suggest a location, so if anyone's got one in mind, please throw it out there.

CONFIRMED: NYC meetup on Sunday, December 3, to celebrate the release of MeFiComp!

As first proposed here, we'll meet at Solas (232 E. 9th St., b/t 2nd and 3rd Aves., 1 block north of St. Marks). I know the management, and do a monthly event there already. They have a side room (The Coal Bar) that is normally unused on Sundays, so we'll have the room mostly to ourselves. I'm thinking 6 pm would be a good start time. More details within.
