There seems to be a mefi tradition to not speak ill of the dead in obit threads, but what do we do when the obit is for someone abhorrent to the community?

litterateur 1985 - 2009 "You give your/words to me"

I got an email from another member letting me know that litterateur, the young woman who posted a few questions to AskMe about her leukemia and its relapse, died at the end of October. Her questions and comments encouraged a lot of us to become bone marrow donors and learn more about marrow donation. There's a short obit here and her blog which contains a lot of her original poetry is at Ex Poeta. She also wrote poetry at AllPoetry where her profile page contains a letter from her mother about her first eight years as an adopted Korean girl in America and abroad. I went looking to see if I could find more information about her and was led, of course, to facebook. Her wall is public and it was touching to see so many friends continuing to post to it giving her updates on their lives and telling her how her cat is doing. A friend made this Vimeo slidehow of photos of her. The person who let me know about her death didn't feel up to writing a MeTa post so I said that I would. Rest in Peace, Kalila.

I am not as dismayed by some as the single-link obitfilter, which we have discussed many times before. But I think they can be done better than this. Single link AND no mention of the deceased party's name AND the less-than-helpful tag obituary? Really?

Sad news: friend and fellow mefite hexxed passed away on Saturday. While not the most prolific of commenters, he was a long time fan of the site. On display at the funeral were a number of personal items, one of which, a beat up, very old, ruggedized laptop, was directly attributable to his time here; he bought it after discovering this thread and proudly showed it off whenever he could. His legacy will live on in our Milwaukee meetups in that, it was him who introduced me to Paddy's, the location I've suggested for every meetup here in the last two years. He was 31 years old, and will be missed greatly.

Olive Riely has died at age 108. I met her thanks to pyramid termite's 2007 World's Oldest Blogger FPP. I didn't think her passing worth a repeat FPP, but I wanted to mark the occasion and share the news with others who may have been as charmed as I was by a blog that transcribed the reminisces of a woman born in 1899.

This post should've been deleted within seconds after its posting. (1) Snow was neither important enough nor talented enough to warrant an obit thread here. He was just another cog in the Bush/Cheney Propaganda machine. Rush, Coulter & O'Reilly would rate an obit thread, but if Steve Doocy got hit by a bus? ORLY? (2) It upstages the post immediately before it, covering the death of the infinitely more worthy Dr. Michael Debakey. (3) It was pure snark-bait by WCityMike even to the inclusion of a quote that has to be the biggest bald-faced lie of 2008: "Bush's wavering conservatism has become an active concern among Republicans, who wish he would stop cowering under the bed and start fighting back against the likes of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Joe Wilson," said Snow in a column. "The newly passive George Bush has become something of an embarrassment." It was stunning, after that, that one MeFite, tried to defend Snow's humanity by writing "he was the "good" conservative, able to construct an honest argument." BULL SHIT. Colon cancer is a terrible way to die. So is hanging, but I don't regret the death of Sadaam Hussein.

The uninteresting dead dude in question (who died uninterestingly, natch) is a purveyor of what amounts to stolen smut, often presented in a degrading or demeaning way. Maybe this has already been mentioned on the grey, but the Heath Ledger thread is marred by some particularly predictable & troll-esque "why give a shit/we need to cut celebrities down to size!" comments. Is there any way to informally discourage the exact same comments from being posted every time a celebrity's death is memorialized in post form? I think it's fine if someone wants to bury Caesar instead of praise him in one of those threads, but snark about the validity of even caring is just intensely grating.

People die every day, and so what?
