Celebrity Dead Pool.

A lot of discussion has been had lately on obituary threads and more specifically on how crappy the initial post(s) of well known people are as posters try to take advantage of Metafilter's usual first post stays policy. Several people have proposed that Metafilter run a vetting system for obit posts or take other actions to reduce the need for multiple post deletions along with their attendant comments. One suggestion was for users to maintain a prewritten obituary pool for famous people similar to those used by news services. I've set up a proof of concept on the wiki here. This is very rough at the moment. Among some of it's weakness is the index page is ugly and hard to parse and the obituaries themselves use wiki markup for links instead of html. The latter means a simple cut and paste isn't going to work when it comes to posting the obituary though a light editting should be given anyways to provide a cause of death.

I'm not a professional writer so the obituaries linked off the index should be considered as barely above Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. I don't think discussion of the contents is warranted except in the case of style. Just go ahead and change it and reserve the back and forth on details to the associated talk pages.

Vaya con Dios, Lu.

My friend Soulbee has left us. Alexandra Clare Wilich, 28, died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008.

I'm not really sure what to say - I feel kind of numb. We became close friends after a question she asked a while back. This time 7 days ago we were chatting and trading music with each other. She really loved Dan Bern.

She was known as Lexi or Lu to her friends and family. The service is this Monday in NH if any of you would like to attend with me.

Is this something I'd have to have a Metafilter account to know about?

Users commenting just to say they haven't heard of the topic of discussion is 100% noise and garbage.
I'm all for positive/negative discourse on any topic on any thread, and even arguments of non-newsworthiness in FPPs. However, the need to show how cool you are by saying "I don't even watch television" in a thread about a TV show, or "I don't know/care who (dead person a) is" just isn't contributing to a thread at all. If you're not contributing, it's noise, and the comment should be deleted. Every time.

People comment on threads to discuss a topic. Disagreements abound in threads, but that implies an opinion on the topic. This type of behavior is just trying to show everyone how cool you are for not knowing about something. Ignorance ≠ Hipster cred, people.

More like MEHtaFilter, amirite?
