The site was down for a couple of hours this morning; resolved now and we're looking into what triggered it. Sorry about the inconvenience, y'all. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Quantified Self

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, aniola asks, "What data do you track about yourself? Eg., books read, places visited, eating out, etc." And why that data!

Alternate question: What did you do with yourself during the Great MetaFilter Outage of 2018?

Unplanned Server Outage

The site had an outage today for about 6 hours. It wasn't planned and I'm sorry that it happened. [more inside]

MetaFilter Offline

MetaFilter was offline from around 9:45 PM Pacific Time to 4:00 AM Pacific Time. A hard drive failed in our database server, taking some of the database with it. We were able to restore from a backup that happened at 7:40 PM Pacific. So we lost data during those two hours. We apologize for that, the long downtime, and the bumpiness as we get things running again. [more inside]

I take it that Metafilter dodged the bullet tonight? [more inside]

Why can't I reach Metafilter?

What is being done to curb the continuing amount of times that MetaFilter dies in the arse each day (e.g. when it's inaccessible)? Just wondering.

Why does MetaFilter occasionally just wink out of existence?

I'm fairly new around these parts, so forgive me if this is stupid question, but why does MetaFilter occasionally just wink out of existence? This doesn't seem to happen to most of my other favorite sites.

Outage, whoops

Sorry about that, but for the first time since I started hosting mefi at server matrix, there was an outage:

D2 OUTAGE: www.metafilter.com Last Updated: 05/04/2005 19:05:17 Details: This server did not come back online after reboot. We will investigate shortly.

(bwalker-05/04/2005 19:05:17): This server would not power on. We have swapped the chassis and this machine is now powered up and responding to ping and RDC.

But all should be good now.

Is there any way we can help to ensure MeFi uptime?

Is there any way we unfortunate non-Californians can help to ensure that MetaFilter becomes a 24-hour operation once more? [More inside.]

Sorry about the downtime

Sorry about the downtime, I was moving from one place to another, far away. Things should be back to normal now.

The recent hardware upgrade left the server vulnerable to worms

Alas, there was a critical fact overlooked on the recent hardware upgrade, one which left the server vulnerable to the [sapphire|slammer|SQ hell] worm. All's better now.

Sorry about the brief outage today

Sorry about the brief outage today; the networking equipment at this end of the T1 had a seizure, apparently, and needed to be restarted in order to get things back in order. Makes no sense to me (or to the networking gurus at my ISP), but there you have it.

"What's up with blogspot?"

what's up with blogspot? many of my favorite blogspot-hosted weblogs are down (as is the homepage), but some blogs just won't go away. there's no mention of an outage or server crash on the blogger website or on evan's weblog. anybody know anything?

What did other mefiers do during the outage?

I'm curious, what did other mefiers do during the outage? I'm 1/3 through the first volume of a certain story by Proust, although to be fair I've had a lot of free time these past few days.

I'm extremely PISSED

For the record - I'm extremely PISSED that BloggerPro has been down for over 12 hours now without warning. It didn't bother me when I was a freeloader, but now that I've payed for it am I alone in wanting a little bit more than I'm getting from Pyra?

I just want needed to vent...

Plastic.com has been down for a while; does anyone know what's up?

Apologies if this is the wrong venue, I can't think of another place to ask:
"Just give us a couple of days" said Plastic as they went offline about a week and a half ago. Anyone know if they're over and done with?? :(

There seems to be a router problem somewhere on the east coast

There seems to be a router problem somewhere on the east coast (looks like globex's mae east facility is having probs), according to my traceroutes. I can barely reach the site. If you're having trouble connecting as well, that's the issue, it's not the server or Jason's t-1 line.

Spellcheck Function Not Functioning

The spellcheck function still appears to be dead. I saw that Thirteen already mentioned it but thought I might go ahead and mention it again.

It was a pretty cool feature. Now it just bugs me. :)

MetaFilter outage

FYI: MetaFilter was down for about three hours this morning because of a shoddy power chord. The power chord could wiggle a little bit in the back of the server, and when it did, sometimes the power connection would break. This would happen occasionally as people walked right next to it, jostling it ever so slightly. Today though, it looks like it happened at 6 in the morning in a locked office, so I replaced the chord with one that won't cause it to power down.
