Cal OK, Cavemen not, huh? I call BS. I realize a) that poolio asked for the delete and b) no context was provided and c) Geico is a Very Large Corporate Entity while Cal is a small-to-middlin Localish Character, but jesus christ, ads are ads. With all due respect to y2karl, the reason all those interesting videos of RnB and blues and country guys exist is that video or film exposure was seen (correctly) as a great way to build the artist's audience, thereby increasing sales. Geico is unique among current ubiquitous advertisers, maybe unique in the history of ubiquitous advertisers, and unquestionably has greenlit some of the strangest, most engaging, and unpredictable ads of all time. A comprehensive linkroundup of the spots is in and of itself of value, above and beyond the publicity benefit to Geico or controversy on MetaTalk. Poolio, I thought the Geico post was fucking great.

Is this sort of thing just Pepsi Blue in a new bottle? Recently there was an AskMe post about men's shaving products that I know was a case of lazyweb market research (because the poster admitted as much on a certain orange-and-blue-themed site before he posted it), and I didn't say anything then, but I wonder if a) this is more of the same and b) whether the community at large cares if AskMe gets used this way.

1) When is turning a comment into a FPP okay? The poster acknowledges it as such in the FPP itself and the old thread is still open for new comments. Shouldn't the new links be added to the old thread?

I found this post and the technology fascinating, and I don't consider it a shill for the product. But then I began wondering why it wasn't considered a shill post--if a product is cool enough, does it transcend the shill factor? What separates a shill post from a post about a nifty gadget? Or is it just a collective "We know shill when we see it"?

NEWSFLASH: "Pepsi Blue" is no longer funny (was it ever?) As my very first post reflects, I actually am concerned about sly product placement on MetaFilter. But I'm tired of the cynical 'viral marketing' callouts on any post that is in any way tainted by the scent of capitalism. At one time I may have found it amusing, but it's just getting old. And in the FPP in question, I don't appreciate the backhanded accusation. It's obviously an innocent post, and if it garners more attention for lucky Mr. Kerry Edwards, then more power to him.

So this thread isn't exactly an advertisement, but it does link to a site whose actual purpose seems to be to sell some sort of penis-enlargement-pill.

I'm not saying that the post should get yanked, but I am wondering whether content whose purpose is to advertise a product should really be the subject of a front page post.
