Better late than never: Issue 8 of MeFi Mag is here

It's taken a while, but Issue#8 of MeFi Mag has finally arrived! This issue's theme is sex and covers several different views of the subject, from humorous to touching to harrowing.

First up, the results of the Sexiest MeFite contest, complete with photos that capture the unique beauty of each special person.

Brandon talks about the girl that could have been his first; in an excerpt from a longer work, DancesToBlue writes about the one that was. Pjern's story isn't about his first, except maybe his first time doing that.

We also have three firsthand looks at sex work. First Meatbomb tells about his experience with "The Second Battered Woman I've Known" , By The Grace Of God's foray into phone sex, and ILoveSocks' necessarily anonymous "Simple Transactions." We do warn that readers sensitive to rape triggers should avoid that story.

Unicorn on the Cob dispels some coming-of-age myths, at least for Texas teens (kids are less salacious than you'd think), and The Whelk ventures forth armed with MeFi Mag press "credential" to cover the Fleshbot Awards. And finally, Ardriril turns reproduction into code.

All this plus photos and art by rhapsodie, elgilito, ElvisJesus, hellojed, msbrauer, TimTypeZed, monkey!knife!fight! and jessamyn!

Order print copies or read PDF.

Next issue's theme is Nerds, covering all the glory and wonder of geeking out. Here's a sneak peek of the cover, drawn by TimTypeZed.

Shoot for a deadline of January 15th, send submissions to the usual spot. The issue should be out in January or February.

Once more into the breach: DaShiv photos, and a video.

Archived past meetup photos and a video from MeFi's 10th Anniversary in New Orleans. I have passed through fire and death, and I come back to you now -- at the turn of the tide.

First up is a little something from the 10th anniversary soiree at New Orleans. This was a complete one-off: I'd never used video hardware/editing before and I was just playing around to see what the spankin'-new (at the time) camera was capable of in the hands of a neophyte. No editing at all other than splicing shots together, writing a few titles, and adding this great instrumental by ORthey.

Secondly, a couple of past meetups that I'd not had the chance to post yet: Tampa and Toronto. There's at least one more meetup set that I've shot (in San Jose with cortex present) whose files have disappeared somewhere under the ravages of time. I'll add them to the archives if they turn up.

Which brings up the archives of all my meetup photos. The SQL database on my Gallery install had melted long ago (probably due to comment spam), which unfortunately destroyed all the username labels attached to the photos. I was able to dig up the images again from my backups to load it all on Flickr, but if you have a moment to help label a few faces you might recognize for posterity's sake, that'd be awesome.

Total archive size is 34 sets and 500+ images from meetups spanning all the way back to 2004 (!), all at one convenient location. There are tons of great faces in the mix, whether you're looking to stroll down memory lane or are just curious about the sordid evolutionary history of MeFi meetups.

And just for old time's sake are more Ladies Love DaShiv and The DaShiv Technique images, collected from various sources.

Lastly, various people that I need to get photos out to should have already heard from me by now.

Confidential to the Cabal: where is new sekrit clubhouse? Have I missed the mass Google+ circle-embiggening?

Mefi-Famous Photographer

There was a Metafilter member who took really nice pictures of Mefites at meetups. I think this was around 10th anniversary time. He was Mefi-Famous for awhile and folks may have been even planning meetups around his travels. I also remember a comment from him where he talked about some of his techniques. Anyone remember who this is? I tried searching under different combinations of "meetup" and "photos" and am having a hard time narrowing it down.

Where have all the kitties gone?

One of the reasons I joined MeFi was because I was reliably informed there would be kitty pictures.
I have now seen posts regarding cats WITHOUT photos of said cats!
This shit must cease! I need kitty photos!

PS I pride myself on being both vague and nonsensical so feel free to delete if need be.

Photo Friday on Metachat

It's Friday!...which means that over on Metachat, we continue the Friday tradition of posting photos by members on a given theme (this week, Fences; other recent marvels, Glow, Photobooth, Reflections, Old/New. If you haven't been over to MetaChat in a while, or ever, Photo Friday is a nice place to start with a post or a comment - and a relaxing way to wind down the work week with a few moments of Zen. Many thanks to essexjan, who manages the Photo Friday project, and to the photographers who post.

Huge dog

Post containing pictures of a guy's huge dog? There was a post in the blue a little while ago containing nothing more than some close-up pictures of a really big dog (I think a great dane or pitbull) chasing its ball and doing dog stuff. It may have been deleted for having so little content, but the pictures were kind of neat and I'd like to see them again. Search has turned up nothing for me. Does anyone remember this?
The dog was brown and I think its ball was orange or purple. I believe the owner also took some pictures of the dog with his little girl if that helps.

Focus, people, focus!

Can-you-ID-this-filter: Focus, people, focus! Not to pick on anyone in particular, but of the last few ID-filter questions, only 1 has nice clear pics of the object in question. Now I know cameraphones aren't ideal, and not everybody has a nice DSLR or even a good P&S, but blurry photos = more guesses / poorer answers = less useful AskMeFi.

Tips:

More light = faster shutter = less blur. Fluoro lights or halogen desklamps are good, outside in full sunlight is better. The 40W globe in your toilet? Not so good...

Take a step backwards, or move the camera back an inch or two. Filling the screen is no good if the camera can't focus on the subject.

(Sorry, it's just something which I've seen way too much of recently, both here and on other fora I frequent, and in most cases it's so easy to fix with some care - a bit of light, move back into the camera's focus range, and voila! We're identifying objects rather than blur...)

User photo upload mangles png

What with the buzz regarding user photo greasemonkeying, I have a user photo bug to report. Forgive me if it's a known issue (search didn't turn up anything). Any attempt to upload a png image results in garbled crap if the png is interlaced. Everything looks fine up until the cropping point, but after crop (even if no crop is needed) it becomes crazily distorted. I thought it might be due to transparent sections in the png but even a nontransparent one failed spectacularly.

My sole attempt to upload a non-interlaced png worked, it wasn't mangled, but colors were inverted and transparent portions of the image turned into psychedelic rainbow oddness.

I gave up and uploaded a gif file.

Photoshop CS3 to make it / FF3 Win to upload it, if it helps.

Stunty McStuntster

Yes, this stunt post was a bad idea... ...but I felt it was just in light of the absolutely not-FPP-worthiness of this post.

And I knew that mine would likely be deleted.

But come on. I'm no newbie. I've been here at MeFi for a long time. I know what's good and what's -filter. And posting a few images - no matter how good they might be - is REALLY stretching "Best Of The Web."

Look, I know I'm in the minority here at MeFi. Not liberal. Not Democrat. Not progressive. But I'm not exactly a McCain fan, either.

But the level of worship here of The One is astounding. And to be honest - really - I'm OK with that. I know where MeFi stands, mostly.

I was just trying to inject a tiny wee-little bit of perspective with my admittedly bad and stunty FPP. And demonstrate how awesomely lame such an FPP is/was/will be.

Photo galleries as FPP? Eh. Maybe. But a photo gallery about a politician who is in the public eye as no one before in history (probably), both here and on the TV and on the radio and on blogs and on various filters, nearly every moment of every day, often accompanied by doe-eyed worship, and being photographed more than any other politician ever?

Come on.

Can we make the meet-up photos more prominent? Ideally there'd be picture links to the last few sets on the sidebar or along the bottom of the MetaTalk front page (like the recent photos in profile). Or at least the little photo icon in the recent meet-ups sidebar section would be a clickable link.

Back when meet-up pictures warranted their own MetaTalk posts I used to look at every one. Now I forget to, often for months at a time. Tellurian mentioned that under the new system a lot fewer people view the pictures. God knows I always forget about meet-up pictures. I think looking at pictures of MeFites enjoying themselves together helps good community feeling.

There appears to be a bug on the recent Flickr photos page. I've seen this bug regularly, though not every day. Today's example is a repeated picture by bibliowench on Jun 9th, 2008 and bevedog on Jun 9th, 2008. Both are displayed as "Omeka stickers", both link to the same external Flickr page. I am running firefox on macos. (I don't read MetaTalk much, so I apologize if this is a known bug. I did do a quick search for a posting about the same topic.)

look at you people!

We've added a widget for checking out Meetup photos without having to leave placeholder comments in meetup threads. Check the MeTa sidebar. It works like this: threads posted to the MeFi gatherings category have a little sidebar box in them (example). You can put URLs in them for meetup photo pages. Right now they post with a link to the name of the person who added the URL and that may need tweaking. Then there is a week's worth of past meetups on the mai MeTa sidebar. Threads with photos have the little pictures icon. This will also show up on the big past meetups page.

See also: Medusa's photos. We're still waiting on Koko's as well!

Sorry for the late posting -- I had to work through my wedding backlog a bit more before I'd let myself look at the meetup photos, plus I was so jetlagged that I wound up sleeping through most of yesterday anyhow. The timing of my actually posting any meetup photos is always a bit of a crapshoot.

Speaking of jetlagged, I'd just returned home this past weekend from an overseas product shoot, where I was gifted/bribed with a DSLR and a couple of lenses for my labor. So I was working with a completely different DSLR system this meetup, and hence the technical difficulties some of you may have noticed that night as I was fiddling with making things work. More immediately obvious though is the very different "look" of the photos, due to my experimenting with direct (and often harsh) off-camera flash. I've been dissatisfied that my shooting style has become too static, and hence I tried to add more drama, dynamic lighting, and looser compositions into the mix. So if you don't look as flattering as you expected, you can blame my artsy-fartsy pretensions.

Lots of fun, as usual -- see you next time! (And ook ook again to the monkeys!)
