Can we just once have a thread about apple, that isn't Blazecock Pileon versus the world? I mean really, do you collect a paycheck from them? If you don't, then you should. There are actual lawyers and experts on patent law contributing to the thread, but bp is, as usual, monopolizing it with whatever tedious talking points he got from daring fireball or complaints about an anti-apple conspiracy on metafilter. It is beyond boring.

Metafilter collectively piled on to this OP so hard that she returned to update that she was actually essentially being triggered by the responses. How can we do this better and keep our own issues out of being helpful? Is there a way to "report pileon"? Should there be? The anonymous OP in question was disappointed at her boyfriend's proposal (which was in fact pretty blah) and went to ask how she could get over feeling bad about it, and also, how she could avoid feeling shame about feeling bad. A whole mess of MeFites with baggage around marriage proposals and the wedding-industrial-complex went in to take her to task for daring to want a romantic proposal, thus effectively shaming the OP in a question about how she could feel less shame. Awful. Really godawful. But as far as I know, there's really no way to kind of avoid this. There's no way to report a pileon, and very few individual responses were really beyond the pale. So what do we do? I think this is honestly a black mark on AskMe, that this request for help went so completely backwards. Thoughts?

The answers to this question have just been a horrible pile-on and it needs to stop. Seriously, 50+ answers saying essentially the same thing? Can we use some restraint here?

Okay, so this is an idiotic question.. Given that, howzabout everyone (myself included) sits on our hands since I just don't think anything helpful remains to be said. Except that orthogonality's answer was pretty awesome, and actually answered the question.

Remember to stick to the subject and issues raised by the post, not people that commented on it

This AskMe question has quickly become a pile-on against the poster. Sure, the question has some elements of the ridiculous in it, but it's crossing the line. Two select comments: 1, 2. Also, this comment really addresses the problem we're creating by attacking the poster.

Regarding this question. What's the rule of thumb here? Is it ok to pile on a poster and not answer his question if he's a minor? If his parents are possibly rich? If he lives in LA? If you don't like his attitude? If you're mad because you had a shitty car when you were 16, or even -- GASP -- no car at all, and this kid totally doesn't even deserve one, much less a NEW one?

And yet... and yet MetaFilter is a joy to read. I'd wished personalities weren't made into issues at the cost of issues themselves - issues are, after all, what MetaFilter does best - but then it struck me that perhaps MetaTalk is fulfilling its role as a sort of blotter-paper, soaking up all the displaced aggressiveness and natural human attrition and rivalry. And keeping MetaFilter clean, so to speak. Is this perverse or healthy in a leeching, purging sort of way? So - can this be talked about without thinking it's about somebody or another? Has MetaTalk been efficiently used so that MetaFilter can be MetaFilter? Is it being dumbed down and fouled up? And does it matter if the result over in the blue seems so successful?
