I like the MeFi Podcast! The last one was posted June 12 so if I am not mistaken we are in the longest between-podcasts interval since they got started in 2007. That was a 20-podcast year. We've had four so far this year, good lengthy ones, to be sure. What has changed? Are people not so interested anymore, or are the mods just too busy?

Podcasting 101, please

It's been a while since this has been asked, and I think more folks than me would benefit from it (hence me doing a MeTa rather than using the contact form): Could the podcast team talk about their current setup, hardware and software-wise? I've launched a podcast at my job, and two episodes in I'm frustrated by what I'm getting in terms of sound quality. It's four of us on a Skype audio-only call, with good bandwidth all around. But I'm having a helluva time getting levels normalized throughout - they seem to spike and disappear all over the place - and my headset seems extraordinarily sensitive to background noise (air conditioner). So, how do you guys get the quality that you get? Headset mikes, or table-based podcast mikes with separate headset? How do you record? (I'm using the $20 Call Recorder plugin for Skype.) Any other tips, or things you've learned from doing the podcast for so long?

I thought the interface was great, and I like the idea of transcribing the podcast for everyone, but I don't think the effort is sustainable with only a couple of transcribers working on it.

Pony Request: Can we include the podcast shownotes in the podcast RSS feed? I listen to the podcast using Instacast HD for ipad. It is a great podcast client that comes with a built in web-browser to let you click on shownote links while you are listening to a podcast. Unfortunately, the metafilter podcast does not include the podcast shownotes in its feed. Could we fix this so that the podcast shownotes show up in instacast? To illustrate what I mean - ATM in instacast, the mefi podcast looks like this wheras podcasts with included shownotes are look like this Since the metafilter podcast is all about the included links, and the shownotes are already produced with links already for the site, this seems like it would be a simple thing to improve the podcast feed so that it included the shownotes and showed up nicely in instacast? So, pony?

Fanscribed helps listeners transcribe their favorite podcasts into text, by fanning out the work involved to followers of the podcast in 30 second snippets, making the transcription process fun and interesting!

Requirements: A Flash and JavaScript enabled web browser. That is it! After learning there was an attempt to transcribe MeFi Podcast I readily jumped in to assist with the latest and found both suggested tools to be not as efficient as Fanscribed. It is my intention to have all of the MeFi Podcasts 100% transcribed by making the process easier for anyone to jump in! Features: - Open Source and Free - Convenient hot-keys so your fingers never leave home row. - Snippets are a digestible 30 seconds per session. Transcribe just one or MANY! - Pause/Play has an automated 3 second rewind feature built in for efficiency. - Editable on-the-fly key for abbreviating Speaker(s) names while transcribing- the full name populates in the final transcript. - Sessions locked for 20 minutes allowing unlimited users to transcribe at once. Additional Information: Currently being used for one other podcast (6 hours of audio/week) and a demo video is available with that podcast as example. I had the creator of this wonderful tool set up a demo page so any and all interested MeFites can put it to the test!

Podcast pony: A smidge of normalisation/compression to even out the volume? I love the podcast, but I often find myself listening with my hand on the volume control. There's a huge difference in volume between the loud moments (usually laughter or when the mods talk over each other) and the quiet moments when only one mod is talking. It makes it hard to find a volume setting where the podcast is always audible yet never too loud. A look at the waveform in Audacity shows very high peaks and a lot of variation. A bit of normalisation or dynamic range compression could even these out. Cortex, would you consider running a filter over the podcast before uploading it? (I know DRC is a controversial thing in music, so I understand if people don't want it applied to the tracks. But for spoken word, some degree of compression really aides comprehension and listener comfort. Thoughts?)

The Secret Parisian Painter was my personal favorite post that didn't fit into the other categories. I'd never heard of Claude Verlinde before, and I'm entranced. I love the art, and I love that he seems to have liked painting about books and libraries, dreams, the subconscious, and the psyche, among other things. I pretty much want to pore over every single image, and I like to imagine what he would be painting as a young artist today. As a couple of others mentioned in the thread, I'd really, really love to see his work in a physical medium. I've gone back to the post and followed the links (and looked up more on my own) many times since it was posted, and the artist himself is still pretty much a mystery. As someone wrote in a blog post elsewhere, I sort of want to live in this painting. (by adamvasco)
