Should incomplete questions be deleted?

Regarding ask metafitler similar to this one, where people don't give a fuller picture to their question/problem/situation: maybe they should be deleted? If a person isn't willing to be open about the things, why should metatime be spent on it?

what's the policy for/function of an anon question?

what's the policy for/function of an anon question? i've been using metafilter for awhile, but have never used it. since isaw about seven anon questions in a row, i'm curious: how long do they usually get to take approved? as i understand it, they are hand-screened? so, is it a few days...a week? and, do they count towards your question of the week (they have to, it would be too easily abusable, i guess...just one of the sentences in the explanation seems to mean that).

sorry for the confusion -_- just one of those things i never quite got around to figuring out.

AskMe for free graphic design?

AskMe for free graphic design? It's a good cause, but it's still a solicitation; I get plenty of those through other channels, don't really think they belong here too.

One user's great post is another user's meh....

I really don't care to see a FPP about what you vaguely remember your friend told you today. The Wikipedia links don't help, thanks.

Can everyone say "I'm the best"?

Policy Question: I am not trying to call anyone out at all, (really!), but is it considered OK to mark you own answer in AskMe as the "best" ?

Bitching about one-link FPPs

One-link FPPs: there's been a lot of bitching about these as opposed to multiple links. It happens a lot with breaking news, or an unusual site or article. Personally I don't think there's a problem with it per se: multiple link FPPs are not inherintly "better". As an example, come this Friday White House indictments will (likely) rain down, how would the naysayers begin a discussion thread about that?

Deletion query

Ah! The sting of deletion has pricked me for the first time. Without getting into boring specifics (I would assume my offense was off-topicness), I wonder if the policing in AskMe has become more stringent? Guidance from the deleters-on-high would be appreciated--I am all for making the site as useful as possible, and also for not wasting my own time.

all google, all the time

Do we really need an FPP every time Google releases, or announces, or speculates about the possibility of perhaps one day developing, a new product or service ?

In addition, do we need a new FPP every time someone combines one of said products or services with another vendor's?

Request for reposting

Note: The deleted post of mine was supposed to be saved as a draft...I didn't mean to publish it on my own site. I've just found cutting and pasting code is easier than typing it (blogger to mefi). If you note, I've re-drafted it, and as it is a relavent and news-worthy topic, would like to see it reposted.

When is unhelpful okay in AskMe?

So when is unhelpful okay and when is it not? This thread is a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of noise. I assume nobody cares because it's kind of a goofy question, but I think it raises the issue of when is unhelpful okay in AskMe and when isn't it? [more inside]

Rumors and speculation as fpp

Rumors and speculation. The National Enquirer quotes anonymous sources saying that Bush is drinking again. Is this credible enough to be posted to MetaFilter? (That's a real question, not a rhetorical one.)

Answering AskMe Without Expertise?

It may be that I am not the first to notice this but --

Why do people post to AskMeFi topics when they don't know what they're talking about?
Sometimes when the question itself asks for input from some specific audience someone will post "Well, I think..."
(No, not going to link -- I don't want to be nasty.)

I just think it's weird.
Or rather -- "Well, I think it's weird."

Guidelines for Katrina Posts

It's definitely the most horrible tragedy (and biggest news event, too) to hit the US since 9/11, no question about that. I'm just curious: will the Katrina posts ever end, in the near future? what's Matt's policy in this case? In short: what's the difference between a Katrina post that stays up and one that gets deleted? I don't mind Katrina being a large part of the front page, these days, of course. I'm just wondering. Frankly, most of the Katrina front page posts I see could have been just posted as comments in other threads, no disrespect intended.

I am not a lawyer but here is my advice....

This thread has me wondering: when does discussing the law on a forum like AskMe cross over to giving legal advice? Obviously, any lawyer's first answer is going to be "talk to a lawyer." But then what? (A very similar professional ethics problem for doctors has been discussed here before.) My legal ethics class was fantastic, but we talked more about Enron than the internet.

Hypothetical - reposting something deleted for bad form?

Hypothetical scenario: Someone puts up a front page post, but does it in a manner with heavy editorializing / intentionally trolling / etc. The topic is interesting, but it gets removed because of the garbage that came along with it. Someone reposts on the same topic, even with some of the same links, but without the editorializing. Would it be okay? Is there a policy on this?

I hate FPPs linking to hate sites

I really object to people making a FPP which is a link to a neo-nazi site, by claiming it as a 'news' item and secondly without marking the link as a hate site. Van Gogh's murderer would 'do it again'. Best of the web? Perhaps not.

a bit to farky? A one link page to a single "strange news" story is fark's bread and butter, and they posted this a couple hours ago. Posting personal information of other people not kosher

Good idea: Playing with kittens. Bad idea: posting the address and phone number of someone tangentially involved in a news story, who didn't do anything wrong, can't do anything about the situation, and actually tried to help in the only way he could. Oh yeah, and who may not even be the actual person referred to in the story.

the reply is ALWAYS going to be "See a doctor"

Why do people keep asking medical questions on AskMe when the reply is ALWAYS going to be "See a doctor?" Should we have a message like they have on doctors phone lines that says, "If you think you have a medical problem, don't ask us, GO SEE A DOCTOR." in the AxMe posting page?

As a broader question, is community decision making and the internet replacing common sense?

Permalink issues

This post has a link that points to the homepage of some site with the article everyone wants to blather on about. But, the posted link is not a permalink -- this is, the other is not.

It's hard enough linking to sites that might disappear in a year or so, making the archives redundant, but to link in this slipshod way will probably make this post defunct within a week, month? Perhaps a little tiny wee blurb on the posting page would help?

Itty Bitty Rant Over. Comments please.
