Metafilter is not for pyramid scheme

It should be pretty obvious that stuff like this should not fly in the blue. Using this site as a quarry for pyramid schemes is inappropriate and action should be taken accordingly.

Poetic FFP screening.

Within AskMe I offered a link

Why is this post still up?

The Delta is (probably) declaring bankruptcy thread, which features nothing more than a rumor backed up by a link to Delta's home page, is truly teh suck.

What about a Best of the Best of MetaFilter?

What about a Best of the Best of the Blue?

It would be kind of interesting to see which of the top posts (not sure how that would be defined) is voted as the best of the best.

It used to be frowned upon to post links from other link agregators/filters. Has it changed?

When I used to read MeFi regularly, it was generally accepted that you didn't post anything from "the usual suspects" such as memepool, boing boing, b3ta, etc. because they themselves are weblogs about interesting, offbeat links and most readers read them as well as MeFi. Seeing as this "LSD art" story has been the top item on memepool for a week, I guess this policy has changed. (This is really not meant to sound rude or snide, apologies if it's taken that way)

High ascii causes problems on posting

I don't know if this question is acceptable for this section, but I really am curious - what I am doing wrong ?

I have prepared a post for Metafilter (my first), and while it displays perfectly on preview, when I post it a not-so-nice error appears. Could anyone help, please ?

Highlighting User Posts

How about highlighting the threads on the front page that the logged-in user has posted in? Going to your user info to see all your recent comments is a bit cumbersome. Something like making the "n new" in "N comments (n new)" a different color and pointing that link to your most recent comment in the thread.

Nothing is being posted?

I've "previewed"... hit "post", the button reacts, the aura around the button glows, but nothing is sent as far as a reply is concerned.

Waaaaaaaah!

Halfway down the thread, the indent disappears and the remainder replies are flush hard left.

Could this be my problem?

er, our problem?

Thanks.

Metafilter is not about us

MetaFilter is not about us; it's about what we find out there on the web. If so, we should be in the background of our posts if not outright invisible, and we should avoid phrasing our posts as personal blog entries. First example: "I found no post ... I only post it now ... as I see in my weblog's referer log ... that's how a few people found my site." Second example: " I hope ... I've searched ... It has special relevance to me since I am ... Being 25 and wanting to pay off my loans, I may have ... " And posts like this, which are all about personal experience and nothing else, are right out.

What happened to my Black Friday post?

I posted a thread about retail price plans for major retailers being publsished on websites ahead of time. The retailers were ticked. The story questioned if this was a freedom of speech issue or did the retailers have a right to demand the information be removed.
The thread was removed. Was it the subject or the link to an audio news story?

Remember single-link posts?

Remember single-link posts?

A glance at the front page soon reveals they are now the exception rather than the rule. This is perhaps due to MeTa influence. You know: "Add a link or two for context/to show you care/as proof you can google". And yet great single-link posts, like this one, are probably the most appealing and difficult to get right. Not least because I suspect most users will only click on what they assume is the main link. Have multi-link posts become the norm or are they just a passing trend?

can we find double posts in comments?

New member; first post; searched and searched; usual story. Then this comment, by furiousthought, pointing to the fact that my link had already been posted in a thread (albeit, in my defense, long before I joined and cryptically referenced). So I wonder whether the automatic URL search facility which exists when you preview a front page post could possibly be extended to include URLS mentioned in comments? At the very least, we could thank the first users to link to it. Nobody has the time to read all the threads or click on all the links in comments and searches, whether MetaFilter or Google, often fail to point to cryptically described links.

Forgive me if this is impossible to achieve, stupid or has been asked before, of course!

Looking for a fake phone number post

I'm almost certain that I saw this website posted to metafilter maybe 8 months to a year ago - a girl goes to a bar and guys are asking her for her home number. Rather than give them her real number she gives them the phone number from this website. When the man(they had a number for women too) calls he gets the answering machine message saying that they aren't interested in that person and not to call again(or something to that effect). The great part about the website is that a lot of times people ended up leaving a message and those messages were on the site to listen to in mp3 format. It was hilarious. I think I remember the number was a NYC 212 number and it was designed in a purple/pink/blue. I've searched all over metafilter and even tried Google but I can't seem to find it. I bookmarked it ages ago but several HD crashes later it's no longer around. If anyone can find it w/your great skills it would be very much appreciated.

I can't post comments at all

I can't post comments at all: when I click "Preview", I do not see any preview and there is no "Post Comment" button. It's not a browser-display issue; I checked the page source and no preview or submit form is being sent.

Why was my thread on the Greek govt outlawing games deleted?

Why was my post deleted?

I've just posted a story to the front page, and for whatever reason, it appears to have been deleted. Now, that in itself is fine - I can handle the rejection! But I would however like to know *why* it was deleted. Is it not possible to have some form of message left to offending user, informing them of why their post has been deleted?

Why did a post get such a small response?

I'm wondering about the meaning of small response to a posting. Is it because there is no provocation and little to add, or because the post is uninteresting to most people?

Why was this post deleted?

Why was this post deleted?

The big fat lie? "The classic [misconception is that] 95 percent of all dieters never lose weight, and 95 percent of those who do will not keep it off. This will be correctly attributed to the University of Pennsylvania psychiatrist Albert Stunkard, but it will go unmentioned that this statement is based on 100 patients who passed through Stunkard's obesity clinic during the Eisenhower administration."

It was a great article, well researched and interesting. I didn't get to read any of the comments that people submitted because I'm getting a "nothing to see here" message when I click on the comments link. What gives? Bingo didn't make up the title...that is the title of the article. I can't see why this topic would be deleted. Any chance that it can be restored? Was this just a mistake or intentional?

Post construction advice wanted

Assuming one has identified 1 interesting front page "lead" post and 3 "supporting" posts that may add value to a discussion. What is the better : a) Include all 4 posts on the front page and be done with it. b)have 1 lead post in the front page and 3 supporting posts in the first comment. c) sprinkle 3 supporting posts one by one as discussion develops. Realize every situation is unique but some general guidance would be very helpful.

Double Posts Must Stop Or Else

I'm sick of double posting. I want to stop double posting. How can I be sure, without manually searching the source codes of every month in the archives, that I'm not double posting? And is there any point in telling someone they've double posted when there's no way they can avoid it?

Posts that promise 'Everything'.

There's nothing technically wrong with it, but how about fewer posts which promise grandiose unified political or social field theory or promise to upset your preconceptions about some subject? Explaining "everything" is admirable, but let the readers decide for themselves whether the world has just been bouleversé. (examples inside).

Should links be described?

Shouldn't front page posts describe the content of the linked material? Lately a few posts have offered a brief opinion of the linked material without describing it (e.g. this one, this one, and this one), which I find a bit of a nuisance because I have to dig just to find out what's going on. By no means am I trying to criticize the posters; I simply wanted to draw attention to a general trend that might need correcting. What do you think?

Is an article published a month ago in the NYTimes too old for the front page?

Statute of Limitations?. The discussion was quite good. It's a timeless topic, still will be relevant 500 years from now. BUT! And it's a big but: I read this article when it came out in the NY Times about a month ago. Can't you presume, correctly, that countless others read it then?

rationing to, say, one front-page post a day?

Since we're on something of a war footing here, can I suggest some kind of rationing to, say, one front-page post a day? I know that MiguelCardoso simply mucked up the URL on his last topic, but it just makes it harder to follow the active discussions...

Nothing's worthy of the front page anymore.

NOT THE FRONT PAGE!!! How come there's never anything worthy of Metafilter's FRONT page anymore? Clipart links, VH1 and Sports Illustrated stories... Rabbits with stuff on their heads!!! It offends me that I must be subject to these unworthy posts!! All of it should be moved to the SECOND PAGE, and leave the front for the REALLY Good stuff.

So - who wants to form the Star Chamber, stop all this 'not worthy of the FRONT PAGE!!!' whining, and replace it with the benevolent dictatorship so many pine for? Or maybe someone would like to put up a link to the SECOND page of Metafilter, where all of the lesser beings can put their contributions..?

Should I filter MetaFilter (asks mathowie)?

This thread sucks. The link doesn't jump down to the story, the subject matter isn't very funny or interesting, it's just stupid. The post is too long, the comments are pretty pointless. I would delete it, but it could create more trouble than it is worth. What should be done about sub-par links? Anything? Take the good with the bad?

I can't post to the front page yet, so here's an interesting link about the moon landings

I was browsing the internet last nite doing some research on a theory that NASA's claim of landing on the moon is a hoax(which was actually in the news on FOX) and I came across this website. I'm sorry but I was just way too lazy to post it up on the main page cuz I don't have those rights yets, but maybe one of you will. Well, anyways, go to this website... http://www.theforbiddenknowledge.com/therevelation2.shtml
A lot of the topics it talks about are very disturbing to me, especially the stuff about Satan's connection to the United States. I was looking for a disclaimer saying it was false, but I couldn't really find one. However, do note that it doesn't really list many references so it might be fake. But lots of interesting reading at this site.

Last post posted on [DATETIME]

Would a "Last post posted on [DATETIME]" be a bad addition to thread headers? MetaTalk, since it uses the same cookie info as MeFi, could benefit from it the most, but there are times it could be useful on MeFi also. Perhaps as a user option, so not everyone gets the extra clutter?
