Can we have a countdown timer for MeFi posts like we do for AskMe posts? How about for MetaTalk?
I'm trying to post in this thread
... I can preview, but when I try to post I just get "Your comment appears to be blank, go back and try again."... and I'm pretty sure my comment is not blank...
Don't post MeMail to a thread without the explicit permission of the sender. Like this
This is so very no
on so many levels.
Happy metafilter elephant
day! [more inside]
I’m MetaFilter user 250, which makes me officially oldschool, but: I very rarely post on any branch; all my old posts are terrible (I checked); my recent posts on the blue are extremely conservative to avoid being terrible like the old ones (many are obituaries); and I pretty much live for AskMe.
I write a ton of things on my own sites, but I never really manage to write very much of use on the various Metas. This at least is my feeling.
I won’t insult anyone’s intelligence by asking “Is it really OK just to read MetaFilter?” Of course it is. I am just wondering how many other early members really, truth be told, never got the hang of front-page posts and other high-profile “content.”
I’m saying this after reading through the archived contributions from some new people (with userIDs 40 times higher than mine), who are way the hell better at it. “We can’t all good at everything”? Or what? What is the right way to react to this?
There have been a few tweaks to tagging, flagging, and posting. [more inside]
Onlyconnect and I hosted a gathering yesterday evening starting around 6 pm eastern. Attendees included at least five Mefites. Topics dicussed at that party that have subsequently appeared on the front page through no action of our own include:
- An extended discussion of "Freaks and Geeks"
- The further creative output of Judd Apatow
- Lesbian Until Graduation (LUG)
Look MetaFilter, despite the fact that I wore the new MetaFilter shirt that onlyconnect gave me (a decision driven by its festive coloring and roominess, since I was planning some serious eating), it's time to stop following us around and copying us.
Matt, just curious as to a follow-up to this comment of yours
Ok, so now that February is over, what happens to the AskMe posting limits?
I can't post on AskMe - on the preview page, hitting Post just reloads the preview page. Firefox 18.104.22.168. Not seeing any error messages either.
Winners of the December best-of post contest...and the envelope please...
Just when I thought I'd figured out how to post code into AskMeFi ...
some feature of the back end is changing two single quotes into one single quote?
Preview and final post modes have diverged. I keep seeing complaints, after munged or garbled messages, about how 'it looked fine in preview!' [bit more inside]
PonyFilter: CDC Recommends
It is obvious when you open the post because the headline is shown, but in the front page, it is just confusing... Can the headline be included on the front page, or can there be a note in the posting page that the headline is not shown on the FP, and shouldn't be used as part of the post summary
Idea: what if the "New Post" and "New Question" links vanish-or change to say "You are ineligible to post"-when you aren't eligible? That would eliminate a lot of the "Oh lemme ax metafilter about that." ...*click*... "Sweet Lady Marmalade! I can't yet!"
Then when you're allowed again they change back to normal.
Quick question - this is something I haven't been able to figure out. How do I post an FPP where the first words are not a link, such as this recent one by TheWig
? Every time I try to leave the URL blank, I get a warning and a request to "please correct this".
Am I just missing something? Forgive me if this is a hopelessly stupid question.
Would it be possible to have the 24-hour posting limit waived if your last post was a double and deleted?
Can a n00b post to MetaTalk?
Why do you need to have a certain amount of comments in order to be able to post a link to the front page?
I've just come across this brilliant documentary about Richard Feynman
, but I'm not allowed to post it.
You cannot post to the front page at this time. This can be due to one of several things. You may not have been a member long enough, you may not have posted enough comments, or you may have already posted a link in the past 24 hours.
I've been a member for quite a while and haven't posted any link on the front page yet, so the reason must be that I lack the required number of comments. I understand that people need to have an idea what kind of links are appropriate on the front page; the question is whether the amount of comments one makes is a good metric to determine this. I don't often feel the need to comment on front page postings.
note: Help maintain a healthy, respectful discussion by focusing comments on the
issues, topics, and facts at hand -- not at other members of the site.
This is new, right? I don't like it.
How can I post a question on AskMeFi using the anonymous account ? When I login using my username and try to post a question, I see a link to post the question anonymously but if I have already posted in the past 1 week, then this link does not appear.
Sometimes, like in threads like this
, it seems that some are either commiting PUI (posting under the influence) or PWI (posting while intoxicated). What is the correct terminology? (I ask because I do it all the time and it would make a great disclaimer!)
I screwed up
. Can you fix it? Thanks!
What would have been a better way to phrase this question?
We just got this request a bit ago, but I'm afraid I must make a similar one. Can someone post an AskMe for me? I've got a time sensitive question and AskMe tends to be the best place to get good help [more inside]
What happend in this thread on Spodee
? My comment is cut off in the middle and the posting box is screwed up.
Can anyone please tell me what the requirements are for posting on MetaFilter?
I mean, it looks random but I am not sure.
Not a complaint--just a question.
Why is it that new FPP's will show up on the Metadash widget about 5-10 minutes before they actually appear on Metafilter? I refresh, still not there, despite the fact I can read it on Metadash. Some sort of time machine?
Just made an FPP
, but it hasn't shown up on the front page.
Having just made an FPP, I can still get to the posting page by pasting the "post_good.mefi"
link. I can also put in any user id and it still gets me into preview. I didn't dare to hit post though to see if that works, but I thought I'd point it out.
Here or AskMeFi?
i'm not sure if i should post this here or ask mefi, but i'm looking for an old post that i found around Thanksgiving.
It was a blog and/or humorous editorial about Thanksgiving in the White House. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and/or know where I can find it?
I've searched for keywords and searched the tags, but i'm just not finding it.
I am unable to add tags to my latest post. I click on "add tags", and I am redirected to the Front Page. Safari, OSX.
What motivates people to post FPP:s to MeFi?
Like the undead coming back to vote, people
posted in several years are coming back to Metafilter...
I want to make an FPP (my first), but I want to make absolutely sure it isn't a double post. What is the best/most thorough way to check this? I have tried googling key terms but I get so many results that it would be impossible to search through.
When posting to AskMe there is some confusion on the descriptions of the text boxes. I copied the italicized text from the "Preview Your Question" AskMe posting page.
Below the "Your question" box the text reads:
This will be the "more inside" area where you explain additional details about the question if necessary. If you use this space, don't write "more inside" to the question area, it will automatically be added for you.
Then below the "Extended explanation" box is something similar:
(optional) This will be the "more inside" area where you explain the question fully if necessary and remember there is no need to write "more inside" .....
I found this a little confusing and repetitive. I know that the top box is what would be a FPP, but maybe this could be phrased better? Is the text below the top box supposed to introduce/explain the second box? Of course, I posted a question so now I can't get back to the original "Post a new question" page to see if that is how this is written there.
I thought these
were some great ideas from duck on how to turn a random interesting thought into a good FPP. (The now-infamous 'mushroom' FPP itself is discussed elsewhere
When trying to post a comment from XP/IE7.0b I get an error message. [MI]
Can we get the 'post a new thread' link dimmed if we haven't waited enough days? (particularly for meta and ask).
On the AskMe preview page, the following text appears: "If everything seems right, hit the post button below. If not, hit your browser's back button and tweak the form again." How about: "...If not, edit below and hit the preview button again to confirm your changes before posting." or some such wording referencing the ability to edit ON the preview page?
This isn't really a bug, but it seemed the closest category
Minor request. Could we have a link to the tags list URL
on the Post a Link page? Thanks.
What if instead of being able to post a link every 24 hours, we simply post ever metafilter day? That would take away the need to count down the hours, make posting easier, and still have the same limiting effect.
The Linux (R) post text doesn't appear in the new mycomments page.
Do we need some kind of entrance examination on sign-up to make sure Metafilter members actually know how to make hyperlinks
Get to the question. Since the introduction of the system more inside feature in AskMe the number of posts where the question
been trending upwards
. Yesterday was especially bad. It would seem that actually asking your question where skimmers can see it would be a prudent course of action.
I posted a new question to AskMeFi this morning, and after hitting submit, I was taken directly back to the main
page, where my question wasn't listed. I tried going back in to post
, but it said I'd already asked my question for the week. To be sure, I logged out and back in, and my question still didn't show up, and I couldn't re-ask it. What happened?
Variable LINK_DATE is undefined. [more]
so, are there differences between the posting limits (once per week) on ask.mefi and metafilter proper? In other words, once you've posted anywhere on the Mefi network, do you have to wait a week to post elsewhere, or is the posting limit unique to each area?
Also, it would be cool if "best answers" were tallied for each user, and posting frequency tied to it somehow. Or not. Please don't hurt me.
Could we please not allow someone to start an Ask MeFi thread before they have contributed to the site by posting comments somewhere? It is really not too much to ask. I know this could be abused by someone posting periods or "What so and so said", etc. I wonder if there is an elegant solution.
The description of the Your Question field on the AskMetaFilter post preview page
has the text from the Extended Explanation (AKA more inside) field).
