Weird preview spell-check mistake... I noticed that a few people on this thread were spelling the verb check: 'cheque'. I was in the middle of writing a comment to ask why (it was a genuine inquiry and not snark) when I previewed. As if by magic check was rendered 'cheque'. Why?

Live preview with iPhone/iTouch? I have an iTouch. When using it to make comments on the site, there is no live preview option. No biggie, but what that means is that the user is forced to preview every comment, before being able to post it. Not a major issue, but in longer threads, say over 50-75 comments, depending on the length of cmments, it gets old real fast because you have type the comment, then hit preview and wait for the page to load again, then hit post and wait for the page to reload for a second time. So...would it possible to include live preview with the iPhone/iTouch, or baring that, enable immediate posting of a comment instead of having to hit preview?

Bug report: The preview function is disabling some features. Recently, I've noticed that upon clicking "preview" while writing a comment, the page reloads with some of the comment functionality stripped. Specifically, all the favorite counts, favorite buttons, and flag buttons disappear. Also, I've got a Greasemonkey script that places a "quote" button after the flag button in each byline -- this vanishes too (which is inconvenient when I decide to quote after previewing). The usernames and timestamps remain in place. Is this a side-effect of the recent server changes? I don't recall seeing it in the past. It occurs in Firefox, IE, and Chrome, FWIW.

Is there a preference setting to turn off comment Live Previews? To my embarrassment, having the javascript update the inner HTML of the preview box on each keystroke occasionally causes a noticeable lag on my hardware (Eee 901), especially when I'm writing a longer comment. Blocking metafilter javascript entirely isn't a good work-around, as that prevents me from favoriting comments.

Suggestion: In AskMeFi (and perhaps elsewhere, Idunno), line breaks in preview ought to look/work the same as when published. It sounded, at the time, like my suggestion here might be implemented, but the issue remains. So I'm just reminding....

When I hit preview the thread, well it thinks about that for a long while, then tells me that I'm duplicating just about every post ever. My post itself is pretty innocuous (maybe not that great, but that's not the point): "We aren't the Brits. We're not the Europeans. I had edited this FPP post after previewing it and the changes weren't applied to the post. Did I miss a step or does this have something to do with using Mozilla Firefox? I understand we aren't able to edit posts after they've been posted, but I was certain I had made the changes before clicking "Post", and they didn't appear when it was posted. Do I have to click "Preview" one last time before clicking "Post" after an edit?

Do overwritten Comment Previews exist beyond the Post refresh? Say I write up a comment, then preview it and see that I was way off base, rewrite the whole comment, and hit "Post." Does the preview page with my original comment exist on some server somewhere? I'm pretty sure the answer is "no," that it doesn't work that way. But if it's "yes," I sure hope they don't last very long. Or, say I write something, preview, then decide not to post. Does that preview linger in some hidden corner? Just curious, really.

Would it be possible to have preview in MeFiMail? It would be nice to see mail formatted as it will look when sent. Helps with proofreading and is congruent with the appearance of commenting.

Previewed HTML works fine, posted HTML less so... This is on Ask, and is visible in my recent question. I previewed extensively and paid close attention to the "if there is HTML makes sure it looks ok", and it DID look ok. But I posted it, and it sure doesn't look ok anymore, and now I look like a zipperhead, and everyone who reads my post thinks "That zipperhead didn't preview" but I did. Oh, lord, I really did. If it's too much or too tricky to make the preview match the post, can we at least put up a warning sign for zipperheads like me, saying that the two don't necessarily match?

When you preview a comment the post's title disappears both in the browser's title bar and at the top of the page. Is that supposed to happen? Because it seems weird to me.

It's pretty annoying that inserting carriage returns shows line breaks as typed in the "preview" window, but the final result is breakless (after all, what's the point of the preview?). I've had unpredictable results manually adding "BR" tags and "P" tags...they seem to sporadically interact with the typed carriage returns and yield vast white space. If anyone can point me to a workaround, I'd be appreciative. But, really, it'd be fitting if postings posted per the preview, no?

I've come across a few issues in my latest AskMefi post related to rendering. When I previewed, the unadorned <> symbols appeared, despite not being HTML entities. When I posted, they got gobbled up as tags. Then I tried re-posting my question as a comment and the extended characters (≤, ≥ and π) didn't display. I am running Camino on OS X 10.4.10.

I've been fooling around with user javascript for Opera and fixed a few problems with the live preview. The first problem is that it doesn't appear at all for me. The second problem is the sluggish live update performance when viewing longer threads. My solution is available here, but I wouldn't mind if it found another home, like the metafilter code? For instructions on how to install and enable user javascripts, go to Opera's documentation. Technical details: changing a page by editing innerHTML directly seems to be a big performance problem for Opera because it forces a reflow of the entire page. The recommended method is to create an invisible copy of the DOM node, make the edits on the invisible node, then put it on the screen with replaceChild. cloneNode and replaceChild are portable to Firefox 2.0 and MSIE7 at least, but I can't vouch for MSIE6. It also uses a 200ms timer to limit page updates to about five per second, sacrificing preview speed for keeping the textarea input snappy. I've tested it out on this thread and this one with 250 message count.

iPhone-y pony please: a way to supress the automatic inline comment preview to mitigate typing lag. Entering text into a plain text area like this one works pretty smoothly from my iPhone. Entering text into the comment fields on posts is miserable and laggy (which isn't good for accuracy). I strongly suspect the lag is due to the javascript that updates the live preview. Therefore I am asking for an easy way to disable the live preview. Basing it on automatic browser detection would be even cooler.

For my own sake, what about enforced preview when posting? In the absence of the ability to edit posts, post-post, forcing the preview stage would probably save me some embarassment. Maybe it could even be a user-configurable option.

I noticed a minor bug when posting a comment earlier. When previewing, all the timestamps are in PST. After posting the comment, everything went back to normal (CST for me). Not a big problem or anything, but a quick search didn't show it having been reported yet.
