[Two] Million Monkeys

I hereby propose a second Metafilter Writers Collaboration. The first Metafilter Writers Collaboration went very well, resulting in a well received free book for the community called Visitor's Day.

In the thread announcing the finished book, many writers involved in the first project said they'd be up for a second project and many who weren't involved said they'd be keen to do so as well. With this in mind, and the fact that I'm married now so have more free time to manage this project, I think it's time for us to get together and write a new book.

Just like last time, the way this will work is as follows.

In this thread a group of six to twelve (max) MeFites who are interested in writing fiction for this project will express their interest and be chosen. Then we'll work out a story hook for us to write about. It could be about anything. Aliens, hookers, the Wild West or a combination of them all. The sky is the limit.

Then we would assign chapters. Someone would volunteer to write the first chapter, and depending on how many writers are involved, he or she would have between one and two months to finish their part of the story. Then the writer would forward their chapter on to the next writer, and so on and so forth, with each writer building upon the story that had been written so far. Given this, please keep in mind when volunteering to write that this can potentially be a year-long commitment for you, depending on which chapter you're assigned to write.

The final stages of the process will see us putting out a call for editors and an artist. Ultimately the final book would hopefully be finished by December 25th, 2010, to be presented as a Christmas present to our fellow MeFites.

Like last time, there's no maximum word limit however it's preferable to see a minimum of three pages be written at the very least, to ensure what we write is something our readers can really get their teeth into, and to ensure that the writer who follows you has something worthwhile to follow.

And obviously, I'll put my hand up for the project straight away, leaving us 5 to 11 open spots.

So now it's over to you. Who wants in? What should we write about? A sequel to Visitor's Day or something entirely new? And for those who just want to read what we write but don't want to get involved themselves, how about offering up some suggestions about what we should write about?

Who wants to play on a project?

No-profit labor of love project - Any way to announce and seek help from the MetaFilter community? So, I'm working on a project that is a labor of love for me - not planning on taking in any money, but definitely not going to be able to do it alone... and I think the MeFi community would have the kind of people who would be interested in helping with it (Yes, i'm being deliberately vague). I'm not looking to pay anyone (So jobs is clearly not the right place) .. and it's nowhere near done (So projects is wrong)... Is there a place I can say "Hey MeFites, who wants to play on this project with me?"

My Project Is Stuck in Limbo

Is there something funky going on with the projects? I announced a project a few days ago, and it hasn't shown up on the projects page. Which by itself wouldn't bother me, but I also didn't get anything saying that my project was being rejected.

Isn't that the way things work?

Self indulgence, selfish or self-link?

Just how "Self"-ish does the self-link ban cover? I was wondering how far removed you need to be from a project for it to be considered non-self-linking for a Metafilter post?

I work on a certain large multinational engineering project - as an engineer, not in PR. I don't (and wouldn't link to if I did) run a website or have any other web-based interest (I do have an obvious interest in that the project pays my salary, though).

Would an FPP about the project be considered a self link? Or is it a little too incestuous for the Blue?

A million monkeys...

I hereby propose a Metafilter Writers Collaboration. Metafilter has a bunch of extremely talented writers. Freebird, robocop is bleeding and Jofus, to name just three. Metafilter also has me; a hack who is itching to write more than he currently does. Were we to pool these talents into focusing on one collaborative project, perhaps we could write the greatest novel known to mankind!

Or, at the very least, something our fellow MeFites could enjoy.

Here's how I see this working.

We get together a group of six to twelve (max) MeFites who are interested in writing fiction for this project. Together we nut out a subject to write about. It could be almost anything. Aliens, hookers, drugs, a combination of them all... whatever. The sky is the limit. We'd try and nut out the subject we could all agree on before January 1st.

Ultimately the final book would be finished by December 25th, 2008; a sort of Christmas present for our fellow MeFites.

I'd also recommend that while there be no maximum word limit, a minimum of three pages be written at the very least, to ensure what we write is something our readers can really get their teeth into, and to ensure that the writer who follows you has something worthwhile to follow.

And obviously, I'll put my hand up for the project straight away, leaving us with only 5 to 11 open spots.

I'm open to any other ideas that could make this happen. So now it's over to you. Who wants in? What should we write about? And for those who want to read what we write but don't want to get involved themselves, how about offering up some suggestions about what we should write about?

Can I repost this project because of new link?

I posted a short film I made to Projects but hours after I did, the site hosting it took the video offline. It's back up with a new URL http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/6370 but I can't edit my old project post nor can I repost it. I had no control over the hosting site and this video is for a contest where only the 10 most popular films move on to the next round. Voting ends October 10. Would it be possible to repost to Projects?

More functionality from project, music listings

In the projects RSS feed, the URL points to the submitted project, not the projects page, so in order to vote or comment I have to go to projects and find the link manually. Also, it would be nice if on the music page, you could favorite and playlist songs right from the main listing, rather then just on the individual song pages, so that if you're listening to a bunch of songs, in order, you could favorite without needing to change pages.

You might post my project to MeFi, but can I add related info?

At some point down the road I will release a project to Projects. I think it's cool and interesting enough that a MeFi post could well be deserved, not just linking to my project but to a number of related sites and documentation. I'm very close to this project, so I can handily write up what I think is a good and wide view of the issue to do more than promote my project. However, I don't want to be accused of self-linking and instead would rather post it to Projects with enough info for someone else to post on MeFi about it. Would suggesting someone do this in the writeup in Projects be going too far?

PS. Additional suggestion for the form I'm currently filling in: "Projects related"

Mefi projects: promoting porno piracy

Announcing the new MetaFilter Fundraising for Fun project. dios and rothko/AlexReynolds have agreed to let you guys vote with your dollars, for charity. Throw some cash into the till for the guy you want to take a break for a week, and in the end it all goes to Creative Commons' fundraiser. Think of it as a charity dunk tank: you put down five bucks to toss a few at the guy you love to hate. It'll run for a week, so let's make the fun last.

Anyone still interested in the PHP-Metafilter project?

Is anyone still interested in the PHP-Metafilter project? From looking at the sourceforge pages, it doesn't appear that any work was ever done on it. I've been working on a project for my company, part of which involves our own internal version of metafilter. It's not an exact clone of MeFi, but it's definately inspired by it. I'd be glad to donate it to the project, if everyone finds it appropriate & acceptable.

I've made mumblings about this elsewhere, but I'm trying to compile a MetaFilter FAQ in the hopes that it'll help new users figure out just what the heck's going on here. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I don't know everything. You can find the raw XML file here. If there's anything you'd like to add, or seek clarification on or wish you'd known about when you started joining in the conversations, please let me know.

Also, let me know your MeFi username, e-mail address and URL (if you feel like sharing) so I can give credit where credit's due.
