It's time for yet another Metafilter quiz! Trivia site Sporcle (previ-ously) finally opened their quiz creation tool to the public and, inspired by good news for the insane's challenging 10th anniversary test, I decided to make one of my games dedicated to Mefi. Mine's not nearly as difficult as GNFTI's, but does require a little more effort. Instead of multiple choice, you just type your answers into a text box, based on the categories and clues given below. If you type in a correct answer, it'll show up on the board. If not, just backspace and try something else. There are seventy answers in all (plus a few seekrit invisible bonus slots that only show up if you guess the right thing). When you're done, click "See the Most Missed" to view charts of how often each answer was guessed and how you did in comparison to everyone else who took the quiz. (And once you start, make sure not to go back to Mefi until you're done, as a few questions depend on memory of what the site looks like.) [ Click here to play ]

So you think you know Metafilter? To repent for not being able to make it to any of this weekend's festivities in person, I made you all a silly little gift: a Metafilter Quiz. 30 questions, 50 points is a perfect score. Play it at the meetup! Or in the quiet comfort of your easy chair! The link is at the end of the [more inside]. Some quick notes: -Googling, Wikipedia-ing or even clicking away from the quiz tab or window is of course ~~frowned upon with extreme prejudice~~ strictly forbidden in the interest of sportsmanship. -I tried to tune the difficulty so that it would be impossible for noobs and a breeze for die-hards. You may well disagree. -It's perhaps understandably biased towards the last five years or so (when I've been around), but I tried to put some old-timey stuff in there too. -Correct answers are worth between one and three points, and I tried to sequence the questions so that they very vaguely rise in difficulty. This is of course very arbitrary and subjective. -Something so inside-baseball-ish as this should of course come with specific feedback and background (and links!) per question, but the free version of ClassMarker (which I used) won't allow it. Perhaps if there is interest we could make a page on the wiki or somewhere where questions and answers are explained. -If you spot an error of any kind, let me know via MefiMail. Sideblog: The mefi political compass. Umm, what the hell is this? The whois information for politicalcompass.org is as shady as it gets. The test has a few major flaws, in my opinion, and works on a significant number of assumptions, especially in regards to historical figures. I don't know if there's an obvious slant to it like there is to the Libertarian World's Smallest Political Quiz, but considering they won't even let you see the code should we be displaying the results of something that could have major flaws written by some anonymous "academics" so prominently on the front page? Not to mention its polarizing and the traditional political labels often fall short of defining anything meaningful nowadays. Oh, and also the Star Wars character I'm most like is Chewbacca.

Annoyed by "What [x] are you most like?" Sites

Am I the only one who finds the proliferation of What [x] are you most like sites on the Internet annoying? Note that I'm not saying they shouldn't be linked on the front page, just that most of the ones I've seen on the Net as a whole have been pointless and increasingly nonsensical. The sites that attempt to tell you how [y] you are with a percentage are equally ludicrous. I am not, for example, 22% goth.

What Dictator/Sitcom Character are you?

Collectively, the Weblog Community has been ga-ga over sites that claim to analyze your personality (the generic personality types, what kind of dog are you, your celebirty mate, sci-fi character types, etc., you know the links).
Well, now it's become popular to use the Dictator/Sitcom Character Guesser in the same manner, by answering all the questions as yourself.
Early results: Ev is Lou Grant, Jason K. is Jack from Threes Company, Brig is Gary Hobson from Early Edition (WHO? The guy who gets tomorrow's newspaper and tries to change it), Bumper Bob is Frohike from X-Files, Jezzicuh is Willow from Buffy, there's even a 'blogger who's one of the Powerpuff Girls.
Who am I? Er... uh, well... On first try, I came up as Hans Moleman from The Simpsons, but after changing my answer to "are you losing hair" to "no" (it was lost years ago), after 43 questions I came out as that wacky neighbor Wilson on Home Improvement.
