Why are people who oppose racism often reluctant to discuss class? In the Jackson Jive incident, five upperclass Australians, four white and one Indian, did an astonishingly racist skit that was paid for by the show's upperclass producers, yet in the discussion on MetaTalk, the idea that this might have something to do with class was only brought up as a joke. I noticed the reluctance years ago: For some antiracists, "class issues" is a square on their racist bingo card. When class divisions among blacks are so great that 40% of US blacks believe there are effectively two black races, I would think anyone interested in race would want to look at class also. Any study of race suggests that modern racism was developed and promoted by the rich to divide the poor. And yet, bringing up class in discussions of race often leads to the charge of derailment. Is this because class is the last taboo? Or can racism be considered without considering its context?

The sheer amount of racism denial in this thread is seriously frightening me. Blackface was never a problem in Australia? Racism is rare? Racism is a thing of history and doesn't apply to Australians? People speaking up and critiquing Australia's entrenched racism are just "peckerheads"? Wow. I don't feel safe posting in that thread anymore. To them it's like the experiences of myself and my peers don't even matter.

I'm sorry, but did someone just post that Gypsies are raised as criminals and have no moral values? Not just a literary allusion to lower-class itinerants, he calls out the Romani by name - the same Romani slaughtered by the million by the Third Reich for being a race of evil criminals. And it gets ten favorites? Really? The Romani are permanent second-class citizens in their home countries, much the same way Jews were - and like the Jews, they were victims of the holocaust because of bullshit like paulsc is spouting. Unlike the Jews, they are still slandered, discriminated against and subject to pogroms, expulsions and hate crimes of all descriptions, even in first world countries like Italy. But I guess it's their own fault as a race for raising their children to have no moral values.

This is a stupid question on multiple levels. I love how the OP asks "why do urban black males...?" and then apologizes for the post being too race specific. Not just "urban", not just "black", but specifically "urban black". Without the racial aspect the question is "why do criminals wear dark clothes?" Has to be a troll.

His/her question about how IP is enforced internationally is perfectly valid, it seems to be loaded with some assumptions / stereotypes about Korea which, based on the answers provided, are quite unfounded.

I think the deletion of this post by indienial is a bad call. The continued destruction of all things Aboriginal is a big fat important & undercommented issue, and one which I was looking forward to reading comments about. I think that the state of Racial inequality in Australia (With highly contentious policies like AACAP) is drastically misrepresented internationally. Ironically, for the "stolen generation", the continued plight of the Aboriginal people of Australia is pretty much ignored. Racial policy in Australia is not in the same place as it is in America. I know why the post was deleted, and I don't really know enough about Oz politics to make a definitive call about how parochial a story it is. However, I feel something important may have been missed, and would suggest (by way of a fix to this problem) that maybe further posts on the subject could be run by a trusted Australian metafilter member to get a feel for how big or important the story is.

What's the ruling on borderline anti-Semitism? In the interest of full disclosure, I may be overly sensitive due to sharing the same religion (though not the particular sect of that religion) with the landlord in question. However, I can't help but feel that had the OP made a similar comment using a different race or ethnic group ("This is just your run-of-the-mill black/Hispanic landlord"), with the obvious inference that certain stereotypes can be assumed about the landlord from the identifying remark, it would not be tolerated. So why is it ok with a particular sect of Jews? It seems to me that this is yet another example of some groups being off-limits to show prejudice against, while with others it's fair game.
