Hey guys, remember way back in 2005 when I had that AIM bot that let you talk to random people on the net? It melted down frequently due to some restrictions of the AIM network, and I lost interest in it. Apparently, the community didn't because people have MeMailed me about it since. I talked about doing a AJAX version, but never got around to it. So I thought you might like to hear that someone else did. Here is to hoping he makes a big pile of money on ads.

Would it be possible to have the pop-out player in Metafilter Music play randomly? There is a Random option in the page (as there is in all the subsites, next to the Home.Faq.Archives... options) but that only opens one song at a time, while the pop-out could keep playing songs. Would it be at all possible to implement it?

If no link to cracked.com is found the FPP submission will proceed as normal. I believe the above feature to be not only desirable, but essential.

We have a fandom post feature now, which of course is excellent. Now how about a random user feature? It could be called 'Get to Know A MeFite' or something like that. I think there are a lot of interesting user profile pages which many people have not and may not ever see, which is a shame, and this would be a potential way to highlight some of them. As an added bonus, this feature could lead to more Metafilter meet-ups as people stumble upon other users who they may not have known lived so close by. It could also lead people to explore their randomly chosen MeFite's posting history which may, in turn, lead many to discover several excellent (and awful) posts, questions and MeTa screeds which they may never have come across before.

I think "random post" buttons for both AskMe and MeFi would be awesome. You would click on them and they would take you to a completely random post in their respective sections. They would function a lot like the "random article" link on Wikipedia. Not to mention - they'd be perfect for our ADD society.

Anyone with me?

My latest FPP might raise a few eyebrows and get called out here on MetaTalk. I just wanted to say here first therefore that I've left a trailing empty link at the post's conclusion on purpose. Yeah, I looked at the guidelines and I don't think this breaks the rules. And yes I have a legitimate reason for leaving the empty link, although I want to wait before disclosing what that is here on MetaTalk. I am doing this for the better of MeFi members however.

Eureka! A couple of weeks ago in this thread I pleaded for some help in setting up my browser so that it would load a random website each time I started it up. Now that I've cracked it, I thought I'd share the link with you as a thank you to all those who pitched in ... it loads mostly weblogs completely at random ...

I have Mefi set as my Home Page on IE but sometimes I wish I could just randomly have a different weblog (or website for that matter) each time I start the browser from a list I can specify (perhaps using a section in 'favourites' or a file on my hard disk). Is this possible? Anyone want to take a crack at it?

Blog of the Moment? Perhaps you could randomly cycle through the user database and highlight a blog every 10 minutes or so, like at the top of the sideblog. It may be a way to temper the urge to self-link.
