WTF, MetaFilter? Especially after two epic threads about rape experience and not knowing whether to trust other people, it seems, I don't know. Unwise? To post about this animation that's rather the antithesis of all that work. I'm really just not getting it. I'm just not feeling the "different strokes for different folks" here, even if it's "art".

This recent thread, from October 8, is just about to close. It's been an extraordinary one, and is still active as of this afternoon. If you haven't read it, or if you stopped reading after the first few posts, you might want to visit or revisit the thread; you will find one of the finest and most thoughtful Metafilter discussions touching on sexism, sexual assault, and gender relations to have taken place here. I wanted to say something about the discussion happening in this AskMe, but in a way that does not derail the thread itself. So, here I am. "Rapists know they are causing pain and distress, on a premeditated basis, and they don't care." This comment is true of some rapists. However, many rapists do not fall into this category. There are times when a man sincerely believes that "no" means "yes," for example. Even when this is the case, the resulting sex is still rape. Rape is not limited to those sexual encounters where the rapist is aware that his victim has not consented. This is true of the word as I understand it in a general sense, and it is also true of the crime "rape" in the United States. I wanted to pull this out because I think it's important... It's tempting to want to define rape as this one very terrible thing, but it's unfortunately more of a continuum, and limiting it to the extreme end does not help the many rape victims whose experiences do not fit in that box. Sorry, I hope this isn't an obnoxious post. I just feel strongly.

Well, askme got served with a doozy tonight and I think it's safe to say it didn't go well. It's not just the completely awful legal advice being dispensed, or the attempt to frame this question as a solely moral one that disturbed me, but the seeming justification of murder (and referencing religion to reason away that murder) that made me shudder.

Calling someone a rapist could be libelous

Calling someone a rapist on the sole basis of an accusation made to a reporter is wrong -- and could be libelous. The allegation against Girls Gone Wild producer Joe Francis is horrible and contains a lot of persuasive details, but that doesn't mean it's true.

I've been on LambdaMOO since 1994; I missed the "Bungle Affair", but am good friends with one of the victims; I've seen the throes of an online community struggle to regulate itself and its growth. Not that I'm suggesting the same approach, but it's good deep background.
