baby steps. I'm going to be redesigning things over a long period, one small chunk at a time. Up for feedback today: a new header for the sites. The goals were to make it shorter vertically, group items by activity, and to clean up things here and there. Please read along and leave some feedback [more inside]

Whatever happened to the great redesign? Lack of time on the part of our great leader or did something go horribly wrong?

Nothing but links... [+]

Minor feature request: a via field on the blue's posting page. As part of the redesign, I'd love to see an optional field for including a "via" link. Two reasons: (1) it would encourage posters to acknowledge the source of the link, if applicable; and (2) it would allow some interesting statistics to be generated from the aggregation of via data.

I am hesitant to post this because I just know someone will point me to one of mathowie's comments within a minute, but what's the status of the redesign for MeFi and its related pages? Searches for updates only brought me to the MeTa thread about the contest entries, and that was over a month ago. No pressure on Matt to hurry, just curious about how it's coming along since I am very excited for the new look.

The HTML markup of Metafilter proper ("the blue") differs from the markup of Metatalk and Ask Metafilter. Given the upcoming changes to Metafilter's look, can we expect similarity in markup across the site, or should we explicitly not rely on undocumented features of Metafilter? [mi]

Last alluded to here: None of the redesign entries (unless I missed something) addressed the "comments by user" page, which is probably the clunkiest and least usable feature on the site. Long comment histories take forever to load (and tax the server); and you can't actually see any of the comments without clicking on each individual link. I think pagination, plus an ability to preview the actual comment, would be a great help.

You'll see it when I'm done with it, I don't know what else to say. Sorry it's taken so long, but I've been a bit busy the past month.

Didn't you say you were using some of the newbie windfall to hire a coding helper to help advance all the vaporware projects? Is this happening or have you changed your mind and decided to continue to do it all yourself in your spare time?

I'm highly interested in the new design of Metafilter. Is there any chance we could get a preview? I understand that we were able to view the winning designs, but I was under the impression that it would incorporate elements from all of the good ones, so I'd like a peek, as I'm sure the rest of the site would.

nice new interface, matt. (looks like the top menu still needs a bit of a tweak, but otherwise, it's terrific)

well, i think it's unrealistic to expect that there is such a thing as an ultimate format or anything of the sort. not to be inflammatory, but times change. fashions change. designs change. i guess that when you get down to it, people eventually get bored with whatever's been overplayed, and move on. which is sort of how top 40s music works, if you think about it.

and, just like in the music industry, the sites that last will be those interesting and innovative sites like k10k that are constantly evolving and constantly adding new and interesting content. the sites that won't are the ones which are difficult to distinguish from the next weblog.

all imo
