Five years in the making and finally complete!

Thank you backtaggers! Thanks to a nudge from mr_crash_davis mark II: Jazz Odyssey and a lot of metadata specialists and friends we finished backtagging all 12,496 MetaTalk posts last night at 12:15 EST (with a few stragglers afterwards). MeFi and AskMe have been done already. This means that every post on MetaFilter that can have tags, has them. Thanks everyone for a job well done. A few more notes about tags, for people who may be curious. - mutual contacts can add tags to each other's posts, feel free to add tags that you think might be useful (but please refrain from editorializing in tags if you can help it) - until we get some sort of a power search going, tags are one of the best ways to pre-search for double posts on the blue - more backtagging MeTa posts/discussion here - If you want to know who our librarians are on MeFi [a group whose membership overlaps but does not ecompass the whole of the backtagging team] you can install this greasemonkey script. If you are a librarian and not marked as my contact, please let me know. It was really gratifying to see this semi-stagnant project get the push that it needed from a dedicated team of volunteers. I really appreciate everyone's willingness to step-up and help out.

As a bit of a brain saver I've made a GreaseMonkey script that hides every comment in a discussion on mefi that has less than 5 favourites. It was the anencephalic baby thread that drove me to it. I was thinking about writing a snark filter, but, you know, natural language parsing and all that, so I decided to make it simple and dumb. And it works. Only quality snark makes it through. And if you ever find yourself thinking "I can't believe I just spent thirty minutes reading 180 comments about W, which was mainly X, Y and Z bitching", you might also find it handy. Naturally, if you wish to fully participate in a thread you will have to turn the script off. Here is the script. It is based on someone else's script that highlighted favourited comments. Future developments I will never get around to implementing:

Scale the cut-off point to the length of the thread
Add a show all comments button

Stop me if you've heard this one before ...

Is the Mondo Meta Options Greasemonkey script making Recent Activity a slow load for anyone else? What else can be used to killfile? I recently installed the script posted here, solely for the purpose of killfiling. It works very well, but killfiling is the only option I would use from this script, and it seems to be causing Recent Activity to drag. I'd really like a script just for killfiling, but can't seem to find one. Anyone?

If you are not using firefox you may skip this post, because it is about a tool that can help prevent comments like this and this These comments, and the comments that inspired them have taken me completely by surprise because I see none of the offending ads when I open the links. None not even google ads. In this way we can discuss actual content instead of how terrible the ads are .

Help computer. Stop all the javascriptin.

FireFox. MetaFilter. A script on this page has stopped responding, do you want to stop the script, debug the script, or cry. Anybody else seeing this on Firefox 2.x? Only started occuring the past few weeks for me. Happens regardless of the site (Ask, MeFi, MeTa). I pulled all my addons out and tried a new profile. Still busted. Any recent changes to the script? I'm not too good at reproducing it yet. It's not happening every time, but it doesn't seem like a memory issue -- I get it sometimes when I have freshly opened the app, and sometimes only after I've had several tabs open.

Bug in just one FPP.

"Protection from the Atomic Bomb" doesn't display a link anywhere in the text of the post (for me). The rest of the page is fine. What happened? My OS is Windows XP SP3, and the browser is FF 2.0.0.14 with the following extentions: Aging Tabs, DOM inspector, Download helper, DownThemAll, GreaseMonkey, SiteAdvisor, Newsfox, NoScript, Shazou, Snapback, Sun Cult, Tab Effect...(wait...I have to catch my breath...) and Talkback.

Where's that greasemonkey script or Firefox extension that adds expand/collapse twisties to you 'recent activity' page? I recently nuked all of my scripts and extensions from orbit (rather than just disabling them, because I'm stoopid) and that's the one I miss. But I can't find it -- I've looked at the FAQ and the wiki and MeFi page on Userscripts.org, but unless my glance keeps sliding past it without noticing it, it's not listed. My google-fu is also weak. Hope me?

A different kind of call out: MeFi has a brand new pony. Just last week I made a plea for some sort of thread marker/scroll tag. Others were interested. Then within a few days, miracle-man Plutor released a script that surpasses all expectations! Already he's updated it, and you can download it here. It's getting rave reviews, and team lowkey modified Plutor's script for a slightly different look if you prefer. Major thanks and props to Plutor for a badass greasemonkey script that should benefit all Mefite .

MetaFilthy bug?

I know that this is an issue best addressed by the creator of MetaFilthy, but before I email him, I wanted to make sure that it's really a MetaFilthy bug, and not some problem on my end, and Metafilter is pretty much guaranteed to have the internet's largest population of MetaFilthy users. So: Is anyone getting a MetaFilthy bug when they open a MeFi page saying "Exception in Metafilthy.showIfValidURL NS_ERROR_DOM_INDEX_SIZE_ERR Index or size is negative or greater than the allowed amount line 1012 of undefined undefined"?

Contemplating the FeaturePony: The MeFi Navigator Greasemonkey script is frakkin' insanely useful, if only for the 'poster' and 'admin' tags (I don't use the comment navigation stuff that much). Wouldn't Safari and IE users praise the ground mathowie walks on if it got built into the system itself?

I run a Greasemonkey script that highlights "heavy links" - links such a Youtube or .mov that might take a while to download.

Should this script action be incorporated into the meta universe?

Proper etiquitte is to flag such heavy links but if you Firefox users install this script and say look at posts tagged with video, you will see many examples of posters who bother to tag their posts but don't flag their links. Then there are many who don’t tag or flag.

Even if you don't support such highlighting at the site (It will just make people lazy), how are my filters? What else do I need to include? [jeez, trying to get the below to display properly was very trying]

Yahoo firefox search plugin for askme

The current firefox search plugins for Mefi were written ages ago for the built-in site search (hence they don't work anymore). Can any of our hotshot code cowboy members look into making one that uses the yahoo search? I'm particularly looking for one to search AskMe.

Here's a little Greasemonkey script that filters out posts by any users you don't want to read on Metafilter (if you use Firefox).

If you want to use it, download Greasemonkey and restart your Firefox if you haven't already. Then click on the first link and then the Greasemonkey install button on the top right hand corner.

By default, it only filters on single Mefi article pages, not on preview or on Metatalk, but you could easily change the Included Pages. By default, it filters out ParisParamus and dios as users but you could very easily download this to your local drive and edit it -- or I'd put up any other variations that were useful (or even come up with a way for you to edit preferences from the program).

This was fun. Was it a good idea? Discuss.

I've written a Greasemonkey script that does pretty much what leftcoastbob suggested here.

It adds a few refinements: the replacement name is "Poster" for the Poster and "Comment N" for commenters, where N is the number of their first comment in the currently viewed thread, so if the same commenter posts more than once in the thread, all his comments have the same replacement name.

This may not be strictly a Mefi bug, but...
I wanted to use the [This Is Good] script for the first time today, on this thread, and found the following error message:

"Sorry, something's broken.

Don't know why, but this script has stopped adding new posts to the database, and I'm too busy with Christmas right now to figure it out. I'll work on it soon after the Holidays, I promise. Sorry!

So, all the other users of that script - in that thread and others - I guess it ain't doing what ya thought, sadly. Is it something on the Mefi end thats causing it to freak out?
