Well, after a hiatus of some months, on Saturday, February 28th, at 8 PM, the Phantoms of Soul return to the Marco Polo Saloon in beautiful downtown Georgetown, as in Seattle. And, as once proposed and well linked, and well and Tube attended, here and here, I renew the proposal that we meet up there and then and yak and drink and eat and laugh and so on. Maybe even dance to the Mardis Gras Mambo. Previously, as those who attended can attest, a good time was had by all. And is to be had once more. The band is quite hoppin' and yet a conversation can be carried on while the joint is still quite atmospheric, cozy and quirky. And, as we have had no meet up for some time, well, there's yet another Why not ? in there, too. As in... Come fill the cup and in the fire of spring, your winter garment of repentance fling The Bird of Time has but a little way To fly and lo! the Bird is on the wing It is spring here--despite the snow--and the birds are on the wing and singing. Life is short. Carpe lager. Hope to see you there.

September / October Seattle meetup?

A September / October Seattle meetup perhaps? I've missed the last 3 and regret it. Would like very much to meetup for drinks, food, conversation, whatnot. I suggest the Cafe Metropolitan in Capitol Hill. Super cheap, decent food, delightfully tacky, and parking not impossible at near by Cal Anderson Park. If you need further convincing, here's a quote from a review: "With it's France Land at Epcot Center as designed by your high school theater set designer decor...."

Seattle meetup? I just moved to Seattle, and would love to meet some of you fine folks. Who would be interested in meeting next weekend? Sometime Thu–Sat 14–16 August? I don't know the area well enough yet to suggest a venue, but I'm living between Fremont and Wallingford and have no wheels yet, so I would appreciate it if we could meet somewhere easy to get to from that area.

Let us cast our boats upon the water. (Seattle meetup) Here's the concept one more time: one can rent a canoe at the Waterfront Activity Center on Lake Washington and stay out until 8:30 PM for a maximum rate of $7.50 an hour per canoe. There will be ample wildlife and not so wildlife. Herons are everywhere and one can see the occasional nutria. Throw bread at the ducks in the wildlife preserve and they may run--in the Arboretum, they form boarding parties. Late June is not always when the ducklings are at their eensy-beensiest babiest but, nonetheless, the Cute will be strong there. I know a route that takes about an hour and a half which takes you to the edge of Laurelhurst, then across the lake and through the Arboretum. But it does involve being on open water for at least a half mile, so there is that to consider. The more athletically challenged--or merely sheerly lazy--could cut directly across to the Arboretum, cast their bread upon the water and languidly await the jaunty sojourners. Lifejackets will be supplied and required and waering them is up to the wearer, given that the ability to swim is highly recommended in the case one doesn't. As always, paddling on the water is something to be done sober, so, perhaps, for the convivially inclined, drinks could be arranged later nearby or near enough by apres 8. See also. Unsolicited testimonial: I haved lived in Seattle for forty odd years now and I can say that, pound for pound, dollar for dollar and hour by hour, this is about the most fun a person can have in public within the city limits. One advantage to renting a canoe in the evening is there are no waiting lines and no crowds on the water. If the weather holds up, a 6 PM start time for, say, next Friday or Saturday is very do-able. And, one can stay out on the water until 8:30 PM, so there is that as well. Friday or Saturday, weather permitting--and it looks like it will--works for me. And you ?

Follow up to y2karl's post about the stubbornest old lady in Ballard (Seattle). I have thought about this lady almost every day, passing by that house, always with the blue car parked outside and the TV glowing inside. Here's a photo of assorted MeFites outside her house at a recent meetup.

Seattle Meetup! May 10 or 11! I am coming to your fair city for to find me an apartment. There should be beer. And poutine. I'll be staying in the U-District, carless and not terribly familiar with your fine system of public transportation (a deficiency soon to be remedied). But I'm sure I can find my way around. I know virtually nothing about Seattle, so y'all more seasoned homies should figure out the wheres and the whenses. I cede to your superior wisdom and experience. Pho is an acceptable substitute for poutine. Beer is not optional.

Time for another Seattle Meet-Up? I just answered an askmefi from someone who appears to live on the same block as me, so I figured we look into putting together another meetup. I know y2karl, dw, slarty bartfest and corpse in the library all seem like cool cats I'd like to share a beverage with, and probably others too. So what say you? Should we find some excuse to go outside these slowly brightening days? (Or atleast find a place with nice windows and a patio, and a good selection of tasty beverages?)

Greater Seattle Dive Bar Christmas Potluck Benefit Concert Meet Up Concept

As described here, and photodocumented here, the Eastlake Zoo was the locale for one of the more successful meetups to which I have organized. Let it be noted, then, that this next Sunday, December 16th, the Eastlake Zoo is having their umpteenth annual Christmas potluck benefit for Northwest Harvest. And there will be live music this year, including, among others, some entity called the Guitar Outlaw Christmas Chorale, Keith Low and Seattle's own maven of lap style slide guitar, Orville Johnson. May I suggest, then, another meet up at the Eastlake Zoo ? The cover charge for the evening is $8 or $5 with donation of non-perishable food item. Regarding the music, while I don't know much about the rest of the line up, I can say that when it comes to lap style slide guitar, that Orville Johnson is hell on wheels. He sounds marvelous. And as for the food, it's a potluck as in homemade and deli platters--hearty cuisine for which YMMV but the one thing is certain: the portions will be ample. We're talking gnosh pit. Bring a can of food for Northwest Harvest and gnosh guilt free. The music starts around 8 and I believe the food will be getting set out about an hour earlier. Hope to see you there.

Greater Seattle Dive Bar Meet Up

As alluded to here, I would like to formally propose a meet up at the Eastlake Zoo. It's a dive bar, true, and a relict from a bygone epoch but there are few such places left hereabouts and none as venerable. I'm thinking somewhere between Thursday October the 25th to Sunday October the 28th at 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the evening, depending upon who's doing what all where else when. I lean towards any of those days, myself. Of course, the total guts move would be to show up for their Halloween party. Just sayin'... It has, under a quarter inch of varathane on the bar top, for instance, a 1971 vintage hipster collage that's one of the seven wonders of historic Seattle--a veritable visual time capsule of 60s psychedelia. Draft beers from Grants to PBR abound as does a similar range of wine as well. There are mass pool tables and four or five pinball machines. They don't serve food beyond jerky, pickles, chips and pickled eggs but Romio Pizza delivers and one could get take out from the 14 Carrot Cafe next door as well. There are four tables in back on a balcony along the back wall with a view of Queen Anne and the Seattle Center which we could take over--I ran the concept by Howard and he's down with it. It would be an act of conviviality and historic preservation all at once, sez I. What say ye ?
