Preparations are in order for the big move. So we're in the process of moving to some new bigger servers and they have new IPs, so we'll have to move the domain over. In the past, we've always just put up the "mefi is down/having a massage" page on the old server and waited for DNS updates to take place. While that usually means a couple hours of no site for most, some people report not reaching the new server for up to a week. This time around, we're going to try something slightly different and instead of taking down the old site on the old server, we'll be switching it to read-only status. That means you'll be able to read the front page, threads, archives, etc, but you won't be able to add anything during the transition. It's our hope that this will only mean a couple hours of downtime as DNS updates usually take, but during that downtime the site can at least be somewhat useful to everyone. We're tentatively scheduling the big move for sometime on Tuesday, likely in the early afternoon, and if all goes well, the new servers should be in place and running by that night. We'll post the IP address and host header hack instructions for those that don't want to wait when the move takes place as well. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up if they pop onto the site in a couple days and notice something different for a few hours.

Pony request: Can we please, please, please, do something to ease the burden of the Palin thread? People obviously want to talk about it and it's become sort of a default election thread. It's got to be killing the servers as well as everyone's browsers. I know, for the past few election cycles, Matt has strenuously tried to avoid having a politics.metafilter. A standpoint which I totally understand, but I think perhaps everyone would be better served by coming up with an arena where discussion can continue without punishing our poor beleaguered tech tools. As an aside, can someone delete the westfalia asshattery? There's no reason for that to be the thread killer that it was intended to be.

Oh how easily we forget! Months ago (a year?) the server was consistently slow or down. Now it's smooth as a baby's butt and fast as the Google. Is Federer your server? I love it. My Mefi addicted brain thanks you.

We're in the process of updating the server. You probably noticed about 20min of downtime and things may be up and down throughout this evening but should resume and hopefully be faster later today and tomorrow.

Why is metafilter so slow and crash-prone? I know it gets a huge amount of traffic, but what causes the regular outages? Do you guys need a new server or what? I can't think of another major site that experiences as much downtime as metafilter does. (i'm not criticizing, I know how difficult it is to run a site of this scale... just curiouis)

Sorry about the downtime today, it looks like some comment spammers were DoSing the box with requests for long-dead trackback URLs. After that was cleaned up, some other weird bugs kept the server unavailable for a few hours, but things should be back to normal now.

MeFi is weirdly halting and slow

MeFi is weirdly halting and slow whenever I load the site, or click into a thread. So, noticing my status bar, what I does is, I adds js.spellcheckthis.com to the 'Block retrieval of URL' list in my favorite local-proxy-crud-removing app, and fazowie, it's snappy again. I know some people love their spellcheckers, but if it's having the same effect on everyone, it seems like a... suboptimal solution.

DNS Issues?

It looks like your DNS server is failing. Metafilter is hosted by eod.com, and they aren't answering for anything in metafilter.com. I'm trying to get this posted quickly before my caches expire... I already can't reach ask.metafilter.com

Eod has only one IP address for their 'two' nameservers, 72.36.180.243. It pings, but doesn't answer name service requests.

You might want to consider hosting your domain with someone with enough money to put two servers on the net. :(

Can I just make a frustration-vent post? These days it seems like MeFi is down constantly, several times a day, and to be honest... I'm getting to the point where I'm about ready to move on to another spot. The problem is that, for me, my main community site is like comfort food; it's a place that I can always pop into to see posts and comments from the people I know, and I can always fill in a time gap or soothe my real-life-related nerves by browsing there. But one of the things about comfort food is that it has to be easy and accessible, and lately, MeFi... isn't. So I have some questions...

Holy mother of god. It's official, even though I was kind of worried about ponying (heh) up the dough for a couple of high ticket servers, I made enough money off the $5 signups today to pay for one year's hosting. Here's a direct approach to the constant metafilter downtime : what would it cost (roughly) to pay someone to port Metafilter to a more reliable platform, and are there enough site members who care sufficiently to foot the bill ? Couldn't Matt just put a little permanent add/plea for $ donations - along with the amount collected and the amount still needed - on the front page ? Why not ?

Why the downtime? For the last week or so, Metafilter goes down at late morning GMT, and doesn't spring back to life until Late afternoon GMT. It seems too regular to be anything other than a deliberate act. Is it going to be a regular thing? How are us European MeFites going to waste time at work?
