Hanukkah is early this year and so is the MeFi Mall!

After five years the MeFi Mall is going self-service. Sort of. It's that time of year when people who like that sort of thing can buy/sell stuff to/from other people who like that sort of thing. Last year we had over seventy participants. Interested in being involved in this year's Shops by MeFites? Read on... Every year we make a little page which links to things that creative MeFites are selling or have for sale. We'd like you to be a part of it. Here are the guidelines.

- Your stuff. Stuff you've designed, created, built, made or otherwise had a hand in. Etsy stuff and Cafe Press type things are AOK.
- Available online. No brick and mortar stores please. No linking to a pdf price list or facebook group and saying "Contact me for details"
- Short and simple descriptions. Aim for 30-50 words or less. Long descriptions may be edited.
- MeFites only. If you want a friend or family member to be listed, get them a gift account.
- No auctions or one-off items for sale. This is for stuff you've created or worked on, not a yard sale.

This year we're going to try to have people write their own blurbs & we'll go through and approve them. This is a simple process. Go to this link. If you had a shop last year and want to use the same blurb, just click the "Looks great! Use this again." button. If you need to make changes or add a new shop, you can use the box and add a new description and choose a category. Here is a link to last year's mall, for reference.

As with last year, we're going to have a sidebar of photos on the shops page. You can add a few photos [1-3 please] to this MeFi group on Flickr. Ask here if you have other questions. Thank you!

If Pomplamoose can do Hyundai commercials, we can do this. MeFi Shop!

MeFi Shop is open for business. Or will be once we get your contributions.
Thanksgiving was late this year so we're a bit behind on the MeFi Shop. Have something to sell? Let MeFites know about it. Details:

- This is for MeFites only. If you want a friend or family member to be listed, get them an account.
- Please keep descriptions simple. Aim for 30 words or less. Long descriptions may be edited.
- No links to auctions or one-off For Sale items, this is for stuff you've created or worked on.

Send me an email to jessamyn at gmail [no MeMail please] with

- A link to your profile [not your username, a link to your profile please]
- If your info is the same or almost the same as last year, just let me know and I can just transfer it.
- A brief description of your shop & category (2009, 2008 shop pages for reference) with a link or two (please no 18-link descriptions)
- Let us know if there's a MeFi discount, we'll add some special icon or something.

Bonus for this year: we're going to have a little sidebar of photos on the shops page because I'm tired of looking at that little present. You can add a few photos [1-3 please] to this MeFi group on Flickr and we'll add a photo sidebar to the page as it fills out.

Ask here if you have other questions. Thank you!

Let's bag some better bags!

A Multi-Region, Multi-National, MeFi Reusable Shopping Bag Swap. Interested? I, like I imagine most people now, use reusable shopping bags when I go grocery shopping. I have an array of cloth and sturdy paper shopping bags from local grocers.

But they're the same reusable shopping bags as everybody else has, because obviously everyone local goes to the same local grocers.

I want different reusable shopping bags! From non-local grocers! I think it would be neat to have sturdy reusable shopping bags from retailers I've never heard of and will probably never visit. They're low-cost enough, and light enough in weight, that I think they'd make a reasonable and fun swap item for people that have ready access to high-quality, inexpensive, local-retailer reusable shopping bags.

Off the top of my head, I know I can get reasonably cheap, reasonably high-quality, reusable shopping bags from local places like the Provigo (a Quebec-wide grocery chain), Métro (same thing), the Végétarien (a two-location vegetable market), the Grande Ruche (the local organic goods store), the local library, and a bunch of other places. I might throw in some from Quebec-based hardware chains, or any place I see one that looks nice and isn't too expensive.

So, say we do the following:

If you want in, you're committing to buying five sets of two reusable shopping bags, worth $1-$4 each, from local retailers (10 bags total). Ideally as local as possible to avoid people just getting bags they have access to already.

You also commit to send those reusable shopping bags to five different people.

I'll make five-person swapsets according to the best geographic diversity I can work out, then at random. We all then send our bags out, and get 10 diverse reusable shopping bags from all over the place in return. If people in your swapset want to send around lists of possible bags and “take orders,” that'd be swell, but they're not obliged.

Deadline for signup: July 19 (two weeks from today). Deadline for mailout: July 26 (one week after).

I'll try to distro things so they make sense, to avoid clusters of people from the same spot. If we wind up with, say, 40 New Yorkers signing on and only three people from elsewhere, a bit of a re-think will be in order.

Show us your shops! Every year we do a pretty simple page where MeFites who offer things for sale can show off their wares in a holiday store sort of fashion. Last year's shops page is here and we'll start populating the new page over here and eventually replace the older one with the newer one. If you'd like to be part of this, send me your info. Details:

- This is for MeFites only. If you want a friend or family member to be listed, get them an account.
- Please keep descriptions simple. Aim for 30 words or less. Long descriptions may be edited.
- No links to auctions or one-off For Sale items, this is for stuff you've created or worked on.

Send me a MeMail or email with

- your username (automagic in MeMail, otherwise a link to your profile is more helpful than your number)
- a brief description of your shop & category (see list from last year)
- a link or two (please no eighteen link descriptions)
- if it's same as last year, just let me know and I can transfer it.
- let us know if there's a MeFi discount, we'll add some special icon or something.

Not sure what the status of the Etsy Team is this year. Ask me if you have other questions. Thank you!

MeFi Mall page for this year's holiday shopping?

MeFi Mall page for this year's holiday shopping? As far as I can tell (which isn't actually that far), the MeFiMall hasn't been updated since the last holiday season. Is this correct? I'd love to be able to check out MeFite stores, and would be happy to help with any of the work involved with collecting links/descriptions.

MetaFilter shirts for sale

METAFILTER SHIRTS ARE HERE! METAFILTER SHIRTS ARE HERE! Finally, after months of prep and research into obscure postage rules and searching for a non-skeevy tshirt company, we have 300 shirts sitting in my garage that I am ready to fold up, stuff into envelopes, and mail your way. The new mefi shirt shop is here.

Unfortunately, our initial goal of getting the shop up a month before the anniversary ran into delays when we had to change shirt manufacturers and had to wait a few weeks for shirts to show up from the new company. If you're in the US and you order a shirt by Tuesday, it should get to you by Friday or so in time for the 10th parties. Outside of the US, it will unfortunately take at least a week to get there.

Printing is actual screen printing (big thanks to Devils Rancher for printing them at his employer) on Royal Apparel shirts (which run a tad snug like American Apparel shirts) in sizes from Small to 2XL (both mens and womens) and even 3X in mens. There are MeFi catchphrases on the front, with a small MetaFilter logo on the back. Shirts are $15 and shipping is $5 US, $10 International. All sales are handled by PayPal and you must list your current mailing address in your PayPal profile if you want the shirts sent to the right place.

If the sales go well, expect to see new designs in the future. I may also be selling the last of the old blue original MetaFilter shirts from a couple years ago.

MeFi Mall Rides Again!

Show us your wares! We're going to do a MeFi Mall page again for holidaytime this year. If you'd like to be included, please drop me a line with your username, a link to a page where people can see/purchase your items and a short text description. A few specifics inside. - We have an Etsy team so if your store is on Etsy please join Metsy (blog) and drop casarkos a note and we'll do one big link to the team.
- Link must go to your stuff, not your friend or family's stuff. If you want them included, get them a MeFi gift account and they can send in their own link.
- I've cleared out last year's store but I still have all the copy so if you want "same as last year" just let me know.
- No links to auctions, craigslist or one-off "car for sale" sales. Links will be up all month.

Any more questions feel free to MeMail me or comment here.

What was the last, or best thing you bought, made, or put money into as a result of Metafilter? Shill for some of the awesomest WANT items, financial allocations, or gift ideas you've gotten from reading Mefi/Askme, etc. They seem to appear across sites for me, can we create a mini-compendium for the moment, here? The book sought after in the post below this inspired me to ask.

Don't forget to include links to the posts they come from, for maximum Mefi-licious context.

MeFi Mall...who's with me?

Tis the season...to shop Mefi? In this post, MadamJuJuJive posits an idea for us to have a Shop Mefi page for the holidays. I like the idea a lot, and not just because she pimped out my soap company. I would love to buy some of the art, music, photography and other goodies that fellow Mefites are making. So, how hard would it be to make a MeFi Mall?
