Hey, AskMefites, thanks for potentially saving my life. I asked this question about my anxiety over getting a sleep study and was reassured by a dozen Mefites. Bolstered by their encouragement, I made an appointment for a sleep study. I got the results last week, and they were shocking. I stopped breathing 394 times in a 6 hour period. My oxygen level dropped to 72%. This is obviously not good. My doctor said that people with my severity of apnea are at high risk for heart attacks, stroke, and brain damage. But thanks to y'all, I'm getting it treated. AskMe rocks.

Thanks MeFi for helping me move! I asked a question on the green a few weeks ago, here. Long story short, I DID take the job and I AM moving and I have NO IDEA WTF I AM DOING, but I'm excited and I know everything will be fine. Just wanted to generally say thanks to you folks for being helpful and taking some of the scare out of my big couple-thousand-mile move. If any of you folks ever pass through Fort Walton Beach, FL and want to hit up the fishing pier...or whatever it is people do there...let me know!

I'd like to publicly thank MeFi user mattbucher for helping make last night a wonderful experience. It started with this AskMefi post about Freemasonry back in 2007. Matt answered some questions and invited people to email him if they had any other questions about Masonry. My grandfather had been a Mason, so I'd always been interested in the organization. I emailed Matt, and he was very helpful in steering me towards more sources of information. Unfortunately I went into the hospital about a week later, and the Masonry stuff got dropped by the wayside. In June of this year I contacted Matt again, and he gave some more pointers about contacting some local Masonic lodges to find out more info. I sent out emails, and ended up visiting a local Lodge a couple of times before I submitted a petition for membership in August. Due to some staff changes at the Lodge the process took a while but my membership was eventually voted on last week and I was accepted as a member of Gray Lodge #329 here in Houston. Last night was my initiation as an Entered Apprentice Freemason. Matt drove from Austin to Houston so that he could meet me in person and attend. He had dinner with everyone, participated in the ceremony, and presented me with a Masonic gift afterwards. I'm having a hard time putting this into words - but it all boils down to "neat things happen when people meet on MeFi". Matt, thanks for the help, the advice, and the friendship.

I just wanted to say what a wonderful memorial the David Foster Wallace obit thread has become. And I would like to commend gerryblog for the excellent post. A lot of obitFilter is about the rush to be first, damn the quality. The post caught my eye and it's how I learned of Wallace's passing - almost in his own words. Given the subsequent doubles, I am so glad the original post was also the best. Also, the quality of the discussion in the thread has been outstanding. So many obit threads turn into shit-fights or simply a collection of "." - this has gathered together a lot of links highlighting Wallace's work and many stories of what the writer meant to Mefites. As callmejay said: "It's days like today that make me realize I love MetaFilter."

I Vant To be Alone!* A few months ago I was at work at the famous indie bookstore and some frizzy-haired dude came up to me, looked at me for a moment and said 'Do you post at Metafilter?' 'Who wants to know?' I asked. 'Me. nasreddin,' and we shot the breeze for a bit. Then a few months later, this cat came in selling used books and made himself a nice chunk of change and we chewed the fat a bit. And we even had an international visitor drop by a while back. Then just yesterday, I was leaning agaist the counter enjoying a brief breather when I spotted a redhead walking up the aisle waving frantically at me. I was a bit worried until I realized it was Don Matteo's chief consiglere herself. About an hour later, this incident occurred, and almost immediately after this dude walked past and waved and I told him about all the fun he missed. Then, today, as I was enjoying a brief breather at the end of the day, a guy came up to me and said 'Do you work he---Oh, shit! I'm from Metafilter!' It was this Certified Ice Mason and we shot the breeze. That's quite a spate of MeFi Meatspace Invasion, people. *Just kidding. This is all a big kick in the pants

The misunderstood teenager in me, perpetually estranged from her family, (for reasons that are deeper than being punk and enjoying the DC Summer of '85), got some healing from the thoughtful and wise responses that I didn't know she still needed. Ask MeFi inspires an author: there's a plethora of traffic-related questions that pop up on the green, but one such question (I'm betting this one) helped to inform a book that's out today. Just giving everyone a moment of MetaPride. This isn't enough for an FPP (I still don't know enough about the FP to make a decent post, apparently, but I've always considered anything that you folks help create to be the best of anything, forget about just the web), but it's certainly worth note.

I can't describe what I would want to say in the way of response or commentary, and anything I could say would be inadequate and presumptuous. All I can do is encourage anyone who is reading this to read her words, to take a little time to learn a little more about the Bosnian war, and to take a moment to remember its victims. I don't know how to point to specific comments in a thread URL. I hope someone can put the time in to do that to increase the chances anyone reading this post with take the time to read her comments.

This AskMe post blows my mind in a minor and enjoyable way. Who knew? It turns out a lot of people have a Tourette's-like response to embarrassing memories. As Miko says in the thread, "It fascinates me that so many others find this familiar, as I also thought it was a personal quirk. I hope we hear from one of the folks who knows something about neurology or emotional psychology - because it's damned interesting to me that there is such a common physical/verbal response to the memory of embarrassment!" (I'm especially amused by the folks who compulsively blurt out endearments to a past love. Seems like that could become an infinitely self-renewing source of embarrassing moments!)
