Bondcliff's comment about showering was both funny and helpful

This AskMe comment was funny and helpful. Thanks for the advice and laugh, Bondcliff. (P.S. What's an "ass cootie"?)

But not nearly as awesome as "King Shit of Dickmeasure Hill"

This thread, interesting in its own right, merits a few callouts for best usernames ever.

Thanks for the community warmth.

Metafilterites rock. After posting this, I not only received a great number of helpful suggestions, but in my inbox today found a number of emails offering donations totaling to well, well, well over the amount of money I spent on the puppy. Unbeknownst to me my RL friends have also been holding a collection, so today has been a wonderful reminder of the generosity of friends and strangers and how awesome people are in general. Thank you! You guys are great! [MI]

Jonson posts awesome links

ATTENTION METATALK WARRIORS. THIS MAY BE A SHOCK TO YOUR SYSTEM - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED: Jonson. You have been consistently posting exceedingly fine links for quite some time now.
This thread is for you.

Yay Metafilter!

Why are the users of Metafilter so great? I'm serious. I lurk a lot and have for years, but I have yet to come across an online community that actually works other than this one. Is it the 5 dollar donation? The name? What? I love metafilter!

I recently posted my 100th FPP in the blue.

I recently posted my 100th FPP in the blue. (But didn't even notice at the time!) Now this probably isn't much compared to some others, but I've been using MeFi for what seems like forever, so I just thought I'd take a moment to say thanks to Matt and the other admin guys, and to everyone else who makes MeFi a great place - since it isn't often we get positive posts in the grey.
Thanks, MeFi!

Thanks!

Not sure if this has been done yet, but: I'd like to thank all you MeFi-type-persons for all you've done for those of us displaced by Katrina. I know the relief fund helped me out quite a bit. Kudos, folks. Kudos. You're good people. I don't care what anybody else says.

Shoutout to the Mods

In amongst all the sniping and callouts I just wanted to interject that I find MetaFilter and AskMe on balance a very worthwhile place. Things can be frustrating sometimes in some of the more contentious posts, but this place has been a wellspring of information and thought.
Thank You Mathowie, Jessamyn, and thank you Metafilter community.

Shoutout to felix

I just want to give a shout out to felix betachat -- who as the sole defender of an unpopular opinion remains levelheaded and cogent, engages with the discussion, and never gets shouty.

Felix, I disagree with just about everything you say, but you're a class act.

Good Conversation

The participants in this thread (about the board game Arimaa) engaged in a long discussion about matters on which they tended to strongly disagree. Nonetheless, the discussion was almost universally polite and respectful, and took things to a level far beyond the premise of the original post. It's not every day you can watch people turn a chat about a child's game into a debate on the nature of intelligence and consciousness, or discuss such controversial issues without things degenerating into a slagging match. Kudos.

Thank you MetaFilter

Thank you MetaFilter, for nearly six years of mind-blowing links, ribaldry, debauchery, helping me become a bit better at critical thinking and debating, and for giving me illimitable examples of what to do and what not to do on the internets. Plus any other stuff I forgot to mention. Y'all rule.

Shoutout for the Mods

Great coverage of UK general election

I've really enjoyed reading and participating in the coverage the UK general election has received at MetaFilter, particularly the follow-up threads (which, in one case, might otherwise have been dismissed as news filter). Contrasting points of view expressed intelligently and with measure. Well done.

a thread about women's issues without any useless "yuck!" comments from the XY crowd

I just wanted to say that it's somewhat refreshing to see a thread about women's issues without any useless "yuck!" comments from the XY crowd. Thought it'd be good to say something nice for a change.

I almost posted this in the thread, which would have been deliciously ironic.

Your memorable mefi moments

Despite some recent messiness, snarking and call-outs on the green and the grey, I (as a noob) am impressed with the recent examples of true connection and "kinship" as exhibited by the life altering experiences thread in Ask MetaFilter (and discussed further here) and the heartfelt advice given to a frightened 20-year old who is about to enter a treatment center.

In the same spirit of recalling favorite migs moments, can some of the longer-term folks share memorable moments where MeFi has demonstrated such “poignancy” and support to fellow MeFites?

Discussion from FPP

"...you get more reactions by being obscure." Newish Mefites: An FPP that leads to an interesting discussion is like catching a foul ball at a baseball game...it's a nice outcome, it will probably be one of the things you remember about the game, and you might even want to bring a glove to improve your odds, but it shouldn't be the main reason you come to the park.

Mathowie, blog advisor to the stars

User Numero Uno gets a shoutout from Gary Becker, a Nobel laureate in economics, and Richard Posner, a prolific author and influential federal judge. I just wanted to say thanks to Matt for assisting these two true intellectual heavyweights in getting online. Although the original test posts have now been deleted, you know you have groupies when your "Hello world" posts get 25 trackbacks.

mad props anew

This has been posted before, but with so many new users pouring it, I declare it high time to bestow mad props anew to Majcher's excellent and addictive GeneFilter. Just change the username at the end of the URL and get a wonderful Burroughsian cut-up of that user's postings. Great for getting a general flavor of what a user has contributed. Hit reload to create a fresh cutup. Enjoy!

Gold star for biscotti

Inspired by her response to the home alone puppy: to crate or not crate question, I want to commend biscotti for her many fine answers to pet related questions in AskMetaFilter. Her contributions deserve a gold star--they are always detailed, to the point and well informed. They are the sort of answers that make AskMetaFilter shine.
