Mefi's own mike mongo, one of the creators of the 'Andre the Giant has a posse' and 'OBEY' memes , reflects on his experience and critiques the obama/joker montage in this post As I read his post, I found it pretty cool with someone with a lot of personal experience and insight sharing it on mefi and to be sidebar-worthy.

Anniversay meetups in the sidebar?

For obvious reasons the "upcoming meetups" sidebar is starting to look empty and lonely. May we have the confirmed meetups posted to the sidebar? Yes, it would be a lot of links. This is but a glorious feature. Show it off, eh? And it'll save a couple of clicks as threads get more traffic for final planning and communication. As a bonus it might help motivate some folks to push their meetups from planning to confirmed to get on the sidebar.

The date format of the sidebar is a bit confusing to non-US readers 4.06.2009 reads as the 4th June to me. Could it be formatted in a less ambiguous way: 4 Jun 2009 or 2009.06.04

Pony request: Can we have contact activity on the green? I'd love to keep track of all the amazing things my contacts are posting but I rarely spend time on the blue. Can we have the option of seeing contact activity (perhaps via a setting in preferences) on the green? The category sidebar could just appear below the contact activity bar.

We get a whole lot of 'what should I do with my life' questions on the Green (some of which I've posted in oblique form myself), and this is a beautifully put assessment of the importance of passion, compromise, categorisation and examination of motives. MeTa Sidebar Picture Pony I like the past meetup sidebar and the indication that there are pictures. Maybe you can add information as to how recently new photo links were added (or if they have been added recently at all). Maybe a friendly icon indicating NEW since last visit or new within the past x days.

Pony request: More best answers in my activity sidebar! 1) I can see if my contacts have submitted an answer marked as best. I can see if they ask a question. But it won't tell me if they mark an answer as best. I'd like it if it did. 2) Due to zealous reading I sometimes see questions that I don't know the answer to and nobody has answered yet. I would love to be able to favorite the questions that interest me and then see their best answers (should they be offered and marked) in my activity sidebar. That would be pretty sweet!

I'd like to take issue with this comment (the "I was a neocon Nazi" comment) being up on the sidebar. I realize it has roughly 8,000 favourites, and that the bulk of the membership here agrees with it, but I just can't believe that's up on the sidebar. Sure it's an "interesting" comment, and it's very clear that he put thought into it and whatnot, but it's very very very biased in a particular direction, and it does explicitly equate "Nazism" with "neoconservatism" (mostly in that they're both very bad, and you should be ashamed of yourself if you find yourself in either camp). Which is neither here nor there as comments go, but putting it up there really implies that the comment is correct and valid in the eyes of Jessamyn/Cortex/Matt. Again, which is fine, but if you're going to *sidebar* a comment like that, then I think we can forget about the concept that this site is open to all ideas, and accept that there is a metafilter political orthodoxy, and that Republicans/neoconservatives/Nazis are not welcome (unless they come to confess their sins). And hey, that's fine too! I just don't know any other way to interpret the sidebarring of that comment. (And I realize there was a whole discussion afterwards in the thread. Which makes me even more surprised that it would be sidebarred.)

On the Upcoming Meetups sidebar in both FF2.11 and IE7, the Feb 8: Chapel Hill, NC post appears twice though I'm imagining it shouldn't.

In the sidebar it says "Recent Past Meetups". Isn't that a case of an unnecessary word? Wouldn't "Recent Meetups" be just as accurate? From my understanding of the english language, "recent" always means "in the past". Removing the word "past" would save on bandwidth, eliminate clutter, and quite possibly solve world hunger.

Littletinyponyfilter: could it be possible to have the sidebar links on the front page for contact activity work slightly differently? When one has the contact activity portion of the sidebar hidden, there's no link to the "all activity" page, probably because it's in the div or frame or whatever CSS/HTML gimcracky thing you put it in. I.e: Could this: Contact Activity (show): be replaced with something like this: Contact Activity (show/all): KTHXBYE. PS. Where's the Podcast?

We've added a widget for checking out Meetup photos without having to leave placeholder comments in meetup threads. Check the MeTa sidebar. It works like this: threads posted to the MeFi gatherings category have a little sidebar box in them (example). You can put URLs in them for meetup photo pages. Right now they post with a link to the name of the person who added the URL and that may need tweaking. Then there is a week's worth of past meetups on the mai MeTa sidebar. Threads with photos have the little pictures icon. This will also show up on the big past meetups page.

Gift Exchange entry deadline up on the sidebar perhaps?

Any chance we could throw the Secret Santa/Quonsar/_______ gift exchange entry deadline of December 12th up on the sidebar, linking to the original thread? I think the gift exchange is a great idea. There's a $10 limit, along with a warning to not get in a snit if you get stiffed, 'cause that's how these things go down sometimes. Throwing it up on the sidebar could generate more interest and participation.
