I enjoy the sidebar and the Best of Metafilter subsite that draws from it. I can't help but notice, though, that arguably the most popular posts are not well-represented there. I refer, of course, to the cute critter posts. Cats, dogs, hamsters, gerbils, even angry toads have made the front page. Videos of them, links to websites about them, even questions about them on AskMe, with all the inherent squee, crop up continuously on Mefi, yet they are conspicuously absent from the BoM site. Now that I think about it, it seems strange no one has suggested an animal-themed subsite (Mewfilter?), given all the pony requests matt and the mods get. Why not let those ponies go free and pance right across these pages? Maybe those automatons who look down on cute animal content, despite its prevalence across the internet, as nothing more than a curious anomaly are holding something incriminating over the Cabal (I'm thinking blackmail material, in the form of Furry videos, possibly involving cortex and a ukulele). Or perhaps the Cat People vs Dog People debate is, like the Israel/Palestine conflict, considered too volatile a topic for us to do well? Whatever the reason for this obvious oversight, as the 'Best of Metafilter' has no place for our fine feathered friends and the prancing pony page exists, for now, only as an illusory dream, why not use this thread today to properly address this lack? Let's document the cuteness. For posterity! So, Mefites, show me the squee. What are your all-time favorite animal-themed posts?

I like the sidebar on the front page, and how it shows nifty stuff and contact activity. When I'm on my phone, I don't have that, and it makes me feel sad inside. Would the powers that be consider adding a line to the menu on the mobile site that would link to the sidebar content? In my head, this looks exactly like what we have on the front page, except tinier and by itself.

There hasn't been a sidebar post of a non-administrative nature in over a month. Are we flagging fewer posts? Are the moderators occupied with something more urgent? Is the sidebar deprecated in favor of the best-of blog? Has the content quality gone down? Something else? I look at the sidebar regularly and would appreciate seeing new content there.

Thank you so much for showing the love on the sidebar. Beyond deep appreciation, I would also like to offer this token of gratitude. It means a lot to have the support of the community. Already, we've gotten our first pop-up outside the UK – The Vespiary Book Restoration & Bindery – Custom, handmade books and book repair in Missoula, Montana. Reading their registration was one of the greatest moments in the last 11 weeks (we started this journey in early June). We've been doing a lot of outreach on the ground in London, and we're building quite solid momentum on the back of that. The Vespiary was the first completely organic sign-up, and it's exactly the type of business for whom we are building the platform. That came from you guys, and it really does mean the world to myself and the team. Thank you again so much, both for the shout-out and all the clicks.

Best Of v. Sidebar

Pony Request: Indicate in a thread which comment(s) have been sidebarred. Some mention was made of this pony before, but nothing seems to have come of it. I was answering this askme and found myself wishing there was some sort of indicator of which comments had been sidebarred (because I'm too lazy to go digging through the sidebar archives). Whether it's just a little note added to the 'posted by' line or some kind of an icon/arrow, whatever, something to indicate that sidebarization has occurred would be a useful feature. And, I hope, not too much of a headache for pb.

Pony request: music.mefi's 'most favorited this week' widget on sidebar (or at least this week's most favorited track). We've discussed raising the visibility of music.mefi several times passim and I know from those conversations that the Bosses are not opposed to the general idea of featuring music tracks in the sidebar. However, how to do it has always been a bit of a stumbling block. However, the music charts -- for all their oft-discussed faults -- do offer a simple functionality for either embedding a widget in the sidebar or the single 'top' track. The most appropriate one is, I think "Most Favorited Tracks (in the past 7 days)" which generally gives a decent snapshot of what's rocking the music.mefi world. As an alternative, maybe we could sidebar the mefi music challenge once a month instead when it is issued? Unless you're regular it's really easy to miss but it's one of the most interesting parts of the site.

Whether it's by happenstance or by design, the increasing sidebarring of fantastic posts is greatly appreciated. I'm a user that can't dig into every post on all three subsites, and I really appreciate the sidebar surfacing the great stuff. Whether there's more great stuff, more use of the "fantastic" flag, or just an effort by the mods to sidebar more, I like it a lot. Thanks!

I'd like to thank peagood for writing two sidebar-worthy treatises on completely different topics in the space of eight days. September 28: "I am formerly a jeweler. I sold a lot of pearls. Miles of pearls.... Here is how anyone can choose a nice strand of pearls." October 5: "I did work as a technical reviewer on a baby, toddler and preschooler book for sleep issues back in 2006, where I learned things that did indeed help my kid." I read these one after the other in reverse order, and when I got to the end of the comment on pearls and saw the name peagood my mind was blown. So thanks.

The Bar: Precursor to the Modern Sidebar? So, I did a quick google search for "Metafilter Sidebar Archive" and found "an install" page. Searching MeTa for "sidebar" dredged up this announcement. I don't remember ever coming across this when it was available: an entirely sidebarred version of MetaFilter. How did it work? I assume that page was meant to fit in its own side frame while a person surfed other websites?

The sidebar (see Apr 12) featured this post, in which someone's seemingly obscure question was answered in just six minutes. I think MY experience was even more amazing (as my question was more obscure), though it did take Gator an hour and ten minutes to cough up an answer. What are some other AskMe Astounding Stories of Snappy Answers to Obscure Questions?

Lately I've been noticing strange behavior in my contact activity on the sidebar. Older posts are showing up as "So and So had an answer with 12 favorites!" but the comments linked are old and have hundreds of favorites. Here's an example, featuring Metafilter's Own Greg Nog. The word "answer" links to this post from 2009, which has over 200 favorites. Obviously they weren't all added today. I've noticed this happen at least three times in the past month. Strangely, all the comments in question were from Greg Nog, though I suspect it has more to do with the fact that he has several posts with 200+ favorites. Unless, you know, he hacked Metafilter or something. So, um, yeah. I suspect there is a very non-critical bug somewhere. Sorry to use you as an example, Mr. Nog. This is not a call out. OR IS IT?

Perhaps sidebarable, Bwithh's comment on the Simpsons Banksy thread offers a fascinating look into animation in both Koreas, with several great links on N. Korea's relationship with the industry. While it would likely be wholly inappropriate to bolt this on to the more inside of the post itself, I thought this was well-formed and really insightful, since the timbre of the thread turned towards animation sweatshops and Rough Draft Korea.

Why would I care what Metafilter had for breakfast? Amirite?

Is it possible to make the Mefi Sideblog Updates (mefi) Twitter account link to the actual thread, rather than the sidebar archive? First off, if this is not an officially-sanctioned Metafilter Twitter account then please ignore this request and tell me to go pound sand. I really enjoy the Mefi Twitter updates, it's a great way of finding out something has been sidebarred, but I find it odd that it links to the sidebar archive (example) rather than the thread in question. Is there a reason for this? Is there any way to change it? I know it's only an additional click, and it's not a great impact on my life, but it would be just a tad more useful if the links on twitter were the same as the sidebar links. Almost ten years on Metafilter and this is my first Metatalk post. It's terrifying. Please be gentle.

My front page contact sidebar is no longer showing posts by contacts that have received the threshold of 12+ favorites, plus other odd behavior. If I click on All Activity I can see that people have been getting picked up by the system for getting 12+ favorites. It's making it into All Activity, but somehow it's not going from there to the front page sidebar. When I first noticed this all my checkboxes for the various filters on the All Activity page were all checked. None were unchecked. I started messing around with them trying to suss out a pattern. I tried unchecking Favorites, clicking Filter, and it did as expected, it filtered the Favorite notes. I checked Favorites to reenable them, and clicked Filter, and... the favorites are still gone! :( Now after screwing with the checkboxes some more, leaving, and coming back hours later and screwing with them again, I can finally see my contact's comments that have been favorited more than 12 times. On my All Activity page. I still can't see them on my front page contact activity sidebar. It's doing this on 2 different computers, one Win7 64 and one Ubuntu 10.4, in IE8 and FF 3.6.8 and 3.6.7. Here is my frontpage contact activity sidebar. Note the lack of "UserX had a comment with 13 favorites in Metafilter." Here is what I get when I click on All Activity at the bottom of the contact activity section of the sidebar. There are such notifications there. Here is a screenshot of my contact activity page with Favorites checked, with no favorites notifications visible when they should be.

I would like to submit this thread on ADD/ADHD for sidebarring. It contains some of the most honest, vulnerable, relatable descriptions of the effects on one's daily life that I have ever heard. Since ADD comes up a lot in AskMe, I think it would be valuable to highlight it.

Pony request: What about highlighting fantastic Metatalk comments in the MeTa sidebar? We only do it on MeFi, but so many of the discussions and comments here are thoughtful and interesting. Is this something anyone else might be interested in seeing? Would it be too much work to implement?

Lacking confidence, I will not call this a pony. It's just a suggestion: how about setting that optionally removes moderators from the "contact activity" sidebar? I adore jessamyn, and many of her answers deserve to be favorites/best answers, but due to her high-profile here, my list has become a digest of jessamyn's activity, which crowds out all my other contacts. (This only affects people who have moderators as contacts.)

A tiny mobile pony: the sidebar of each subsite as an option in the menu? I really like the sidebars in the subsites, but I can't get to em in the mobile CSS without flipping to the normal site view. Could they be added as an option in the menu? Also, glad to hear Matt's healthy, super glad to have the oughts behind me, and happy goddamn new year &c. & so forth.

It's certainly a fishy request.
