MetaFilter Maid Service

AskMe gets a lot of questions about which software to use to clean a Windows PC. Anyone have a particularly good one bookmarked? I need the information myself, but I figure the Wiki entry is about eight years out of date and could use an update reflecting current software.

Wal-Mart: resistance is futile

"Wal-mart is software" - MeFi post or comment? I'm looking for some previous content to show a friend that who recently quit a job at Wal-Mart, talking about how Wal-Mart could be best understood by thinking of it as software. I'm pretty sure this was either a post that linked to an external site with an account by an ex-Wal-Mart employee, or a comment on MeFi itself.

The general subject matter dealt with abusive practices, lock-ins, overnight shifts to defeat hours-per-day overtime rules, etc.

Some specifics that were dwelt on were the importance of the hand terminals (and trying to wrangle a reliably working unit), the management of placement of products on shelves, etc.

I've tried to look through the MeFi archives for it, but I'm drawing a blank on the specific account.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

(I was going to post to askme, but the instructions seemed to suggest MeTa is more appropriate.)

Killer tools for a killer post?

What are your techniques and tools for making a killer post? I have a desire to start making somewhat regular mefi posts that have lots of substance and links... I know I can use bookmarks to do some of the work, but I've also come across PersonalBrain (endorsed by Mr. Connections himself, James Burke)...

What I want to know is if there are any other "knowledge organization"/research tools that can help organize information. Do any of you folks have a preferred research technique/process/flow?

One topic that I'm wanting to do a post on has some seeming scarce source materal online (due to it being in another language) and I'm wondering if hitting up a library and asking a librarian for some help would be a benefit, does anyone ever do that? Is that overkill for a mefi post?

When is a project ready to be posted to projects?

I'm somewhat new to metafilter, and am working on something that I would like to post to projects, but don't want to do so prematurely. It is by no means complete, its usable and useful (I'm using it!), and surely glitchy and dangerously rough around the edges. I'm looking mostly for testers and to at least form the kernel of a community which I can then solicit for feedback. (Some pre-launch buzz would also be most welcome.)

Is this an acceptable use of projects or should it be further baked before I post?

Software on the Space Shuttle comment?

Can you help me find this comment that described how software for the Space Shuttle is written? Not sure when it was, but I remember it describing how the software is written in a general way, something like "it's written by two different teams, then cross checked to ensure its correct". I think that's how the comment started, can't remember the rest of it, other than it was fascinating. I realize this description may not be factually correct and directly contrasts with a comment I found that's linked to below. I'm just telling what you I remember in hopes that it rings someone's bell.

I did a search on mefi for "space shuttle software" and found this comment which tells of the actual group of people who write the software and their process of doing so, but it's not the comment I'm thinking of.

Is this ringing any bells for anyone? I'm almost 100% sure it was a comment, not a post.

How do I get the MeTa software?

Is there a way to get the software metatalk is based on? I'd like to create such a site for a unique project... or something similar? or should I just go with a wiki or phpbb type site?

this would be for a small group of people to ask each other questions (no question limit or fee.) for a large extended family...
