I swear there was an AskMe within the past few days in which the OP was looking for a way to differentiate among spelling variances in names (e.g., Steven, Stephen, etc.) and some responder pointed to a tool that the responder had made that did just this.
Anyone remember it? I can't find it.
Thanks.

Hey, can we have the spelling "judgement" added to the spell checker? Cripes, of all the words we'd ever need on MeFi.
Okay, I know that this qualifies as a "small, specific, and/or immediate problem" but it seemed like a cosmically (comically?) significant (or at least very mildly interesting) omission to me.

I've seen members ask about metafilter members with accounts on other sites like myspace, last.fm, and the like. I was just wondering if there are any members here with Deviant Art accounts, who'd share a link? I've been wandering about looking in the jewelery section and thought it would be nice to peek at and fav some of you guys from here.
Also? The spell checker isn't working in metatalk.

Mr. Haughey, if you've disabled the Java spell-check feature, shouldn't you remove the “Spell Check” form button form Ask MeFi?
Just FYI. Unless spell-check still works for that area of the website. Then disregard this post. Thanks!

Did the spell check button on MeFi comments go away? Has this been discussed already and if so will I be made fun of in the comments for this post?

Is anyone's spell check on AskMefi just not showing up? There is just no icon for the spell checking tool (showing up for me). I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.7 on a Windows XP. Thanks.

The spellcheck button has disappeared for me, in both the blue and the green. And the spellcheck on MeTa posts isn't working also.

Spell check not working. Clicked for it, it generated this error:
Error processing CFX custom tag "CFX_JSpellCheck".

I'm testing out a new ajaxy spellchecker here on MetaTalk for the next couple days. Let me know if you find it better/more useful/buggy. If all goes well, it could be carried over to every textarea on the server.

Oops: The Spellchecker in AskMe apparently doesn't check the "more inside" section (and thus it is
embarrassingly revealed that I know how to spell neither "precocity" nor "curiosities"). [MI]

When posting a question on AskMe, the spellcheck checks the initial question textarea, but not the "extended description" ("more inside") text.

PonyRequestFilter: does anybody else (other than
amberglow) perceive a rise in spelling errors since the deployment of live preview? Is a live spell check viable?

Spell check suddenly not working, both the blue and the green. Get this msg:
Error processing CFX custom tag "CFX_JSpellCheck".
The CFX custom tag "CFX_JSpellCheck" was not found in the custom tag database. Please be sure to add custom tags to the database before using them. If you have added your tag to the database then you should check the spelling of the tag within your template to insure that it matches the database entry.

Malicious Insects: Starting today, as soon as I click Spell Check when posting a comment with Firefox (version 1.03 in Fedora Core 3) my browser immediately crashes. This didn't occur yesterday or previously in the same environment. Also, doesn't happen on my Windows XP machine with Firefox 1.03.
Now that I think about it since I'm on Fedora Core 3 instead of Windows or a Mac, I'll probably just have to live with it.

Would it be possible to have the spell checker updated to accept some common words used here? Mefi and Metafilter (and all other variants thereof) get constantly tagged as misspellings, as do commonly used words like "snarky".
No big deal if it can't be done, but if it could it would be quite appreciated.

There has been discussion about this
before, but I'm wondering if at this point I am the only one having this problem: Mozilla 1.1 in XP crashes about every other time I try to use the spell checker in MeFi (MeTa seems to behave better).

Spell check problem - if the text being checked has character entity sequences
> or
< when spell check completes they will be replaced in the textarea with greater-than or less-than signs. My browser is: Mozilla 1.1 -- Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826.

Isn't it internally ironic that when you run your post through a spell check, it gets caught on the term "MeFi"?

This is really more of a nit, but a nit is a little tiny bug, I guess .... Is there any way to customize the spell-check a little? I'm getting really tired of seeing
Mafia every time I spellcheck
MeFi.

Spell check doesn't work properly on opera 6.0 for linux. The checking works fine, but if you replace a word after the run is complete the entire comment text gets replaced by the last corrected word (owch).

Misspelt words: please, either use Spell Check before posting or slink away silently if you make a boo-boo. Don't post a comment with the corrected spelling and your apology for it. (Do write the word three times to learn how to spell it!)

The spellcheck function still appears to be dead. I saw that Thirteen already mentioned it but thought I might go ahead and mention it again.
It was a pretty cool feature. Now it just bugs me. :)

There's now spellchecking and an improved comment/preview system that doesn't require reloading pages to edit. If you find any bugs let me know. I think the spellchecker.net popup works in most major browsers.
