How about a real policy on spoilers?

Could we have a real documented policy on spoilers, ideally enforced by the people who approve the posts in question? Is it *really* necessary to approve posts (Warning: multiple "House" spoilers!) that are basically spoilers as read, or that have unwarned *spoiler* links? Perhaps all spoilers should be in the "more inside" section, with a prominent warning in the description field?! If multiple people are complaining that a post basically spoiled the episode, then what's the point of expecting the *spoilers!* or *NSFW* courtesies from posters at all, if no such standards actually exist?

Apparently it's time for our semi-annual argument over what constitutes a spoiler and when - if ever - they are acceptable. Personally I don't give a crap but if you really need to have this argument yet again, how about you do it here instead of crapping all over the question?

If matt is looking for something to do he could whip up a <spoiler> tag, so (competent) people could conveniently hide their spoilers. Or is there already such a thing (I envision a textnode with "Here be Spoilers" text with DHTML magic to switch to the spoiler text upon mouseenter or hover).

Should there be a spoiler alert for this question? I haven't read the book, but it seems to me that talk about the "final scene" on the front page of AskMe might qualify as such. Seems like it could be an easy fix.

The Eurovision post had the winner's name in the title. Could there not have been some consideration for people living in countries where it is has not been shown yet?

I look forward to watching it tonight, and while my life doesn't hinge upon who wins, there's a certain pleasure in finding out.

Can this either be edited with a big SPOILER INSIDE notice, or removed? I made a minor effort to avoid finding out who won, but didn't expect to see it mentioned in the first line of a MeFi post.

Please don't post spoilers.

PLEASE don't be a spoilsport! I can't understand why people gleefully post spoilers. In the thread linked below (read it if you want some movies spoiled), one poster proclaimed "15 years is well past the spoiler expiration date." Maybe this is a joke (i.e. Milk Carton expiration date), but if not I totally disagree. A young person might see an old movie for the first time. He deserves to see it unspoiled. Skoosh's reply here reminded me - could the blue have a 'spoiler' tag added to the [B][i][link] tags by the reply box?

By using blue text on a blue background then anything spoilerish for Flash games (etc) would only be visible to those who highlight the text with their mouse.

And if you are going to include spoilers on the more, a warning on the front page would be nice. Thanks! (NOTE: don't click the link if you haven't seen all of The Office!)
