November Favorites Experience concludes. New preferences! Survey! Discuss!

November is over, and favorites are back to normal. In addition, we've got a couple related things to mention: a survey about the November exercise and favorites in general, and a couple of new display options for folks who want to alter the default favorites view. Survey

You can get to the survey here; we tried to keep it relatively short while covering some of the main points of discussion that came up during November and previously. There's a free-form field at the end of the survey, so if you feel like anything was omitted or have additional commentary, that's totally welcome.

Results are tied to userid behind the scenes, so you can only take it once and the admins will know whose results are whose, but the identity of respondents will be kept secret in any results we share.

If you run into any bugs with the survey, let us know here as well.

Display options

The new options can be reached from the Preferences page, under the "Comments favorite style" option. The three options are:

- Show Favorite Counts (the classic style, and the default for everybody)
- Show "has favorites" (the November exercise's default)
- Hide Favorites (no indicator of favorites at all in comment bylines)

Note that in "has favorites" mode you can mouse over the text for a favorite count if you want to peek without a clickthrough to the favorites list.

General discussion

It's been an interesting month; there's been a lot of discussion in the Oct. 31 announcement thread and a more recent thread from a few days ago, if you missed those.

And now that November's over and things are back to normal, this seems like a good time for folks to discuss the whole experience and talk about what they got (or didn't get) out of it. Have at it.

Is polling wrong even if helpful?

When is a survey/polling type question okay on AskMe? I run a retail shop and we have an annual boxing week sale. I'd like to use AskMe to find out people's opinions on two different types of sales so that we can pick the one that satisfies the most people.

Am I wrong in thinking this is a break of AskMe's guidelines as it's kind of a polling question, or am I misunderstanding the rule against such questions? Thank you.

Seeking help with my research of online communities

I am writing a dissertation about online communities, and MetaFilter will serve as the primary focus of my research. I need your help to better understand why MetaFilter functions better than so many other online communities. Can you spare 15-30 minutes to complete a short survey to improve our understanding of online communities? I am a doctoral student in the Rhetoric and Professional Communication program at Iowa State University, and my dissertation research focuses on the role of rhetoric in online communities. Specifically, I'm interested in two big issues: (1) how people shape their individual and collective identities in anonymous/pseudonymous environments, and (2) how members of online communities deliberate to govern themselves.

I've been reading MetaFilter pretty much every day since 2000, and I've been a member since 2002. With the exception of some contributions to AskMetaFilter, I've never been an active contributor to the site, but I consider myself a dedicated lurker and a student of MeFi's culture. It has become a commonplace in popular media and among some academics to characterize online forums as a place where immature dialogue and mob rule trump thoughtful, sophisticated argumentation, but I think MetaFilter (and MetaTalk, in particular) provides strong evidence to the contrary. I'm fascinated by the way MetaTalk functions, and I'm constantly amazed by various MeFites' artful use of language to resolve disputes, request changes in site policies, and praise or shame other users. In short, I think that MetaTalk serves as a model of effective community governance through skillful debate. My goal with this research is to figure out why MetaTalk works so well—and why it has worked for so long.

Much of my research will focus on analyzing old MetaTalk threads, but in order to accurately represent the MetaFilter community, this needs to be a genuine "human subjects" project, with input (and pushback, if necessary) from the community itself. I am trying to make my research as transparent as possible, and I want to involve members of the community as often as I can.

OK, with that long explanation out of the way, here is the formal invitation to participate in this study: Please take a few minutes and respond to this survey. The survey consists of a few multiple choice questions and several open-ended questions about your experience on MetaFilter. At the end of the survey, I ask if you would be willing to be interviewed for this project, so if you have more that you'd like to say (or just want to keep tabs on this project), you'll have an opportunity to do that.

I hope at least a few regular readers of MetaTalk will be able to complete the survey. Your responses will be incredibly valuable as I pursue my research over the next several months. Thanks in advance for your help!

[The fine print: My research plan has been approved by my university's Institutional Review Board, and I have received permission from Matt Haughey to post this request to MetaTalk. If you have any questions before you take the survey, please feel free to contact me using my MeFi user page. I will also keep an eye on this thread and do my best to respond quickly if I need to clarify anything.]

We're about to order up some MeFi t-shirts and are interested in the size distribution of the potential t-shirt purchasing population of MeFi. I know it's a bit of a personal question but if you've ever bought a shirt off a website and are considering buying one from here, drop into this thread and fill out the form on top, or enter your answer directly at Google Spreadsheets here.
Society for the Prevention of Unnecessarily Inefficient Meetup Planning

Doodle, an easy little tool for picking future meetup dates. You set up an event with a number of possible dates. You post the link. Other people who want to attend add their names to get rows, and click all the dates that work for them. It tallies the dates that work best. No registration required.

The link above goes to a fake meetup, not a real event, just so you can get a feel for how it works.

Okay, begin the deluge of all the other sites I don't know about that do this easier and better. Or, if not, someone feel free to post this one to MeFi (where I haven't commented enough to earn the privilege), on the condition that you forward all ensuing favorites to my account.

It's MetaFilter Survey Time!

As part of my final paper for a grad class, I wanted to ask the hivemind a few questions. It's just 20 quick questions about MetaFilter and AskMetaFilter, since those are the two most active parts of this community. I had to break it up into two parts since I'm a poor grad student and don't want to drop $20 for one survey:
Part One
Part Two

It's also limited to the first 100 responses, but if even get close to 100 responses I'll be extremely happy. Thanks in advance! This is master's class, not a PhD, so the survey is really simple. I'm just looking for some basic info about how people interact with the site. I'm also already familiar with this previous survey, but it doesn't really cover everything I'm looking for (I'll probably still cite it in my paper, though).

FWIW, I'm doing this as part of a really unique grad program that the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California started just this year, called the Annenberg Program on Online Communities (more info here). Specifically it's for a class with this dude, for anyone interested in research on virtual communities. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or comments about the survey or grad program.

Television watching survey?

As an informal survey of the bizarre demographic which is Metafilter:

Television.

How many hours a day (if any) do you watch and has it increased in the past year? Or declined? I have a sense that there is an undercurrent of rebellion against TV watching, but I'm a longstanding non-TV watcher. Am I off base or not?
