Indexing tags for search

Small pony: MeFi search doesn't index tags. I was making my FPP a few minutes ago and wanted to link people to where StSanders was mentioned elsewhere on MeFi. I was surprised to get different results depending on what I searched for: Posts tagged with 'stsanders.' A search for posts mentioning 'stsanders.' Note that this thread, though tagged with StSanders, doesn't come up in the search for posts mentioning him.

Improving tagging in a poorly tagged post. Do mods ever add tags to a thread when it's as bare-bones as one like this one? I'm always surprised when I see such poor tagging on something- to me this post isn't about roommates at all, let alone only roommates. Perhaps there should be a flag for 'needs retagging' or something like that. Seems like the search function could benefit greatly from improvements made to some posts' tags in this manner, and be less likely to get lost in the rubble down the road.

Favorite tagging

Another favoriting discussion. With very many users having hunderds, and some thousands of favorites, it can become unweildy navigating favorites. If they are indeed intended as a bookmarking tool, it would be helpful to be able to tag them so we can find things we intend to come back to in the future.

The MetaTalk taggr utility is lonely and needs some attention.

Holy crap, the back tagging project (recent update) is complete! 43,000 old posts have been keyworded by a team of hundreds of volunteers here. A huge thanks to all, I never thought we'd finish up all those old MeFi posts. It's funny, I put a "keyword" table in the database around 2001 and was thinking of optionally letting people assign keywords to their posts but I didn't implement it here until January of 2005 (after seeing it take off so well with del.icio.us and flickr). After a couple years of using them, we realized having 33,000+ posts on mefi and 9,000+ early ask mefi questions without tags would be a huge undertaking down the road to catch up and tag those old posts. interrobang floated the idea in late 2006 and in May of 2007 Jessamyn launched the distributed project of back tagging. pb built a cool ajaxy screen that would display ten posts at a time and let you drop in a string of keywords that all became tags, with a refresh button to give you ten more. Ten at a time, page after page, for almost a year until today when it was finally complete. A big thanks to everyone that helped out (there's a small message on your userpage) because it was a real slog. I would do a dozen here and there but after a few months I still only had a few hundred complete. An extra special thanks goes out to our top super taggers -- here's the top ten and how many posts they tagged:

Adding tags to favorites

An idea about favorites. After several years of "favoriting" comments that I find funny, or informative, or sad, or righteous, or interesting, I now have hundreds of favorites, and no real way to search through them. The recently changed interface is somewhat better, but I think I have an idea that could make favorites really awesome. Would it be possible for us to add tags to comments that we favorite? The tags would only be visible to the individual user, and the user would have a tag cloud—only visible to him or her—on his or her user page. This would make searching for old comments much, much easier. What do you think?

Tagging posse: 2 questions. 1. Is the "10 Random Untagged Posts" really random? Because I just opened it up and it had my first ever MeFi FPP as the first untagged post. 2. What's the update with the tagging stats? Are we nearing the day when there won't be 10 Random Untagged Posts left? Is there a prize for the person to tag the last untagged post? Can it be a Wii?

It's great that there's a tag replacement option for the admins but I doubt it will be an ideal solution since the problem will continue to surface.... Would it be feasible (or even desirable) to whip up a thesaurus to make the tags pull results for all identical terms?

Would it be hard to enable AskMe's tagging system with a bit of AJAX so existing tags are pulled from the database as you type them -- kind of an "auto-recommend" feature -- in order to prevent redundancy?

Tagging Metafilter

Is there any way of having an overlapping system of tags to categorize these MetaTalk posts? So for 'feature requests' that could be a sub-tag of either the 'Metafilter', 'Ask Metafilter' or 'Metatalk' tags. So when I want to see what is being discussed about improving Ask Metafilter I start by selecting that tag and then start clicking the sub tags to get more specific. Finally, the reason I am asking is because I am concerned about the flooding of questions on AskMe and the thing I would do is have a separate section for technology questions as those questions seem to be at least 50% of all questions asked. Mindfuck is a tag that has been used only once on askmefi. I'm truly amazed. More people should be using this in the human relations section, I think. I'm sure it would suit many other categories as well. If people were more attuned to what a mindfuck is . . . then they wouldn't be posting a lot of those human relationship questions, I guess.

I notice on my recent FPP that there is a tag -- "ushmm" -- which I did not write/include. When I click on the "x" to delete it, it does not get deleted but returns this message: "Looks like you're trying to delete tags fromto the wrong post. Go." [sic]. Bug? Hack?

Tags: I hate how they have to be crunched into one word. What's the policy/ettiquette about using underscores? Does it break the database? Or should I avoid them just because they're not convention, therefore no one will know to search for them?
