Hey Houston: desuetude is coming to town at the beginning of December. Let's get together so she can teach you how to pronounce her username! She's arriving on the afternoon of the 5th and departing the morning of the 10th. She can correct me, but it looks like Tuesday is the only day that is absolutely out for a meetup that wont keep everyone up past their bedtimes. Suggestions for a cool evening meetup place?

I'll even bring chaps.

I just want to say that this is one hell of a strong first-post that has really flown under the radar. And I would like to thank Ranucci (flesh out your profile for us!) for a really nice Texas-themed post which is a very pleasant contrast to a couple of posts that have turned into bash-fests lately. Denton, TX meetup Jan. 23 or 24? This post lists great ideas for things to do, but it would be much more fun to enjoy them with a group. I'll be traveling to Denton for 4 days of classes from Jan. 23-26. I assume that Friday or Saturday would work best for most people. I would be up for driving a few miles but prefer not to venture into Dallas/Ft. Worth. Suggestions for specifics welcome: dinner, live music, bowling, bar-hangout-chat, some combination thereof? Any start time after 6:00 would work for my schedule.

At the November meet-up, the idea for a White Elephant get-together came up and seemed like a good time to several people. Want to join in? (you can sit out the exchange part as an amused observer, too) Seemed like a good idea to get planning out of the way so we don't have to worry about in the oncoming holiday rush. Guidelines: $10 max; bring 1 item (wrapped to start) per person or couple (if a couple brings 1 item, they'll get 1 item in return); recycled & handmade items are fine. Time: 3-6pm seemed to work for everyone - chime in if you feel differently. Date: We need to pick a Saturday or Sunday in early-ish January, as these are traditionally post-Xmas (for maximum re-gifting pleasure). If you are *blocked* on any of these days, definitely let us know ASAP. Your choices: January 3, 4, 10, 11 Where: ? Last two were at Opal Divine's and Dog & Duck. Your suggestions are wanted! All decision-making should be completed by 12pm CST 11/25 - I'll post to the sidebar when we've got it wrapped up.

It's getting tedious seeing wfrgms bring out the same old "Don't Mess With Texas" derail one more time. To the Texas-haters: there's already enough legitimate stuff to hate on in the latest thread, so why bring out this tired canard again and again? I know, it's probably amusing to you trolling on Texas one more time, raising their predictable ire. It's a technique that has demonstrated results. But I don't think it's really that great for the discussion or our community. I would like this thread to be about whether we need to have the tired "Don't Mess With Texas" discussion anymore, but some of you will probably make it into a referendum on whether it is a threat or not, once again. I'll have to live with that I guess, but please can this be the last time?

Jane Austin Gathering A few weeks ago there was an Austin meetup to catch an episode of Mythbusters. Anyone up for a PBS Jane Austen meetup? Dates are 1/13 for "Persuasion", 1/20 for "Northanger Abbey", and 1/27 for "Mansfield Park". The biggest obstacle would be finding a bar that would let us watch PBS at 9pm on a Sunday.

If you're making a post about Texas you should reconsider, as many recent threads have ended in shouting matches that do nothing good for the site or the community. If you do insist on posting about those subjects, make sure it's actually something of major importance or at the very least interesting, and not just another news blip about a teacher being fired for taking their students to a museum.
