Pony: Easier way to access mobile site

Pony: An easier way to revert to the mobile site. Current link is 1. tiny and 2. all the way at the bottom. Also, it would be nice if I could search and post from the mobile site, in that order of importance.

Thanks for the mobile site! It rocks, and is one of the best mobile versions of a site I've seen to date.

Five years in the making and finally complete!

Thank you backtaggers! Thanks to a nudge from mr_crash_davis mark II: Jazz Odyssey and a lot of metadata specialists and friends we finished backtagging all 12,496 MetaTalk posts last night at 12:15 EST (with a few stragglers afterwards). MeFi and AskMe have been done already. This means that every post on MetaFilter that can have tags, has them. Thanks everyone for a job well done.

A few more notes about tags, for people who may be curious.

- mutual contacts can add tags to each other's posts, feel free to add tags that you think might be useful (but please refrain from editorializing in tags if you can help it)
- until we get some sort of a power search going, tags are one of the best ways to pre-search for double posts on the blue
- more backtagging MeTa posts/discussion here
- If you want to know who our librarians are on MeFi [a group whose membership overlaps but does not ecompass the whole of the backtagging team] you can install this greasemonkey script. If you are a librarian and not marked as my contact, please let me know.

It was really gratifying to see this semi-stagnant project get the push that it needed from a dedicated team of volunteers. I really appreciate everyone's willingness to step-up and help out.

Best Flame Out Ever! (Or maybe not).

I go in for surgery in a couple of hours to have a tumor removed from my neck. I'm getting a parotidectomy (link not safe for breakfast). I was going to spend some time thanking some people for pretty much being the people they are, for amusing me, or challenging me, pointing out interesting stuff, or giving me the information I needed, but honestly I don't have that kind of time and I don't want to leave someone out. So to the community as a whole I'll say thanks.

I fully expect to make it, but in the event I don't it's been worth the $5. I feel much better about the surgery after reading this askme answer.

This place has been great for me the last couple of weeks especially.

Thanks.

"Maybe, maybe, maybe this will be reprinted? A girl can dream."

I, too, have reason to thank MeFi today: Back in January, peep posted to Metafilter about Mel Juffe and Edward Gorey's The Recently Deflowered Girl, which had been long out of print. Through a delightful stroke of luck, I have become the editor responsible for bringing the book back into print, and the mefi thread about the book was pretty darn helpful to that end. We're publishing it along with two other Gorey books, including my favorite, The West Wing, a wordless exploration of a very strange house. All three books will be available next week in the States.

For an editor like me, who's just getting started in her career, it means so much to me that I'm getting to work on these books by an author I love so much. It's so cool that the internet (and especially, for me, the post on mefi) brought this to light and helped get it back into print. Thanks, mefites!

Thanks, Metafilter

Thanks Metafilter On October 31, the lovely and talented LN married some bonehead she met on the internet. We had met at a very small meetup on (Canadian) Thanksgiving two years ago. On Halloween night, you all were in my mind as I made our thanks and gave our toast at the reception to absent friends and family.

So, for all of you shy guys (and gals) out there in mefiland, I have to recommend walking up to perfect strangers in a bar, telling them you're a bonehead and asking if they're "from Metafilter". It's a sure-fire winner, in my experience.

Thanks Metafilter, from two ridiculously happy people.

2) I wanted to thank several of my fellow ATX mefites for offering help, ideas, or encouragement as things began to get dodgy. adamrice in particular is always very free with good advice and resources when I've appeared to be flailing for just those things. Y'all made a tough time seem a lot less futile. Thanks.

I owe you all

This is a callout. I accuse each and every one of you of being awesome. At the end of April, I was in Laredo, Texas, and suffered the small indignity of a spider bite on my back. By the time all was said and done, a few days later I was in the hospital, my kidneys had shut down, and I was "a day from dead" according to one of my doctors. I had emergency surgery, and all was as well as could be expected.

At every step of the way, Mefites were and are involved. From the IRC crowd on #bunnies who cared enough to read first-aid stuff to me, to ColdChef and Stewriffic, who acted as communications links and helped keep people who cared updated, to the lovely Goshling, who rallied the Melbourne contingent to my side, to Jessamyn, who sent me a wonderfully wacky get-well package that kept my granddaughter and I busy for some quiet happy times during my convalescence, to Matt, who today brought me to tears with an incredibly generous gift, you are all awesome, incredibly generous people. I love you all.

Of course there were other people involved, and I am certainly remiss in not mentioning each end every one of them. Mea Culpa, and if your name is not here, it's not that I don't appreciate you and love you for what you've done for me. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.

Best $5 I ever spent.

AskMe saved me more than TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. Thank you! Thank you! It's been almost a year later, but AskMe came through in a huge way for me. I posted this question last year and the advice I got there led me to a resolution I needed - I was informed today that CareFirst BlueChoice had to refund all premiums along with interest.

I really had no idea what else to do. And I think I can say that without AskMe, I would have cancelled my credit card and swallowed the loss. So wow, thanks!

Law to biology in about 900 easy steps with help from Askme

Local Askme Girl Makes Good [Thanks everyone!] More than three years ago, I started getting serious about transitioning from being a lawyer to being a life scientist. And beginning in October of 2006, I started going to AskMe for advice about the process. Often, my questions came from a place of incomplete understanding, but AskMe never failed to straighten me out and put me on the right path.

About an hour ago, I accepted an admission-and-fellowship offer from the University of Washington. I'll be starting my Ph.D in biology this fall.

I can say unreservedly that AskMe's guidance got me here. Because of folks like ObeyScient, Good Brain, and others, I knew to focus on networking with faculty and doing research. That (now unsuprisingly) turned out to be absolutely key. In addition to that, AskMe's saved me from wasting time on a second bachelor's degree, and on trying to supplement my (future) fellowship income by trying to be a part-time patent attorney. It's also given me great recommendations for self-study resources.

And beyond those specifics, I've got to say, it's been unbelievably great to know that AskMe's there-- for reality checks, for solid answers to obscure questions, for everything. Leaving my law career for a life in biology was (and continues to be) a real step into the wilderness. Figuring out the logistics has been stressful and truly confounding at times, for both my spouse and for me. The availability of AskMe has helped us with that a lot.

So thanks, everyone. Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks. I know that I'm not really a scientist yet. I know that all of the hardest stuff is still ahead, and that the next few years will bring anxiety, doubts, freakouts, and buckets of stress, along with all the anticipated awesomeness. Still, guys-- I'm grateful. Gratitude and AskMe love are pretty much leaking out of my every pore right now.

I don't really know how to end this big, embarrassing love-gush, so I think I'll just finish by linking to a picture of a wombat. They have armored butts, you know? I learned that. From studying biology. Ok. Need a drink now. Hugs. Big, big, big ones. From wombats. With Ph.Ds.

MeFi prevents brain damage!

Hey, AskMefites, thanks for potentially saving my life. I asked this question about my anxiety over getting a sleep study and was reassured by a dozen Mefites. Bolstered by their encouragement, I made an appointment for a sleep study. I got the results last week, and they were shocking. I stopped breathing 394 times in a 6 hour period. My oxygen level dropped to 72%. This is obviously not good. My doctor said that people with my severity of apnea are at high risk for heart attacks, stroke, and brain damage.

But thanks to y'all, I'm getting it treated. AskMe rocks.

Thanks, AskMeFites!

Just wanted to thank the many MeFites who chime in to offer advice to travelers... Mrs. IRFH and I just got back from a short-but-sweet trip to New Orleans, and it was so helpful to be able to double-check our too-long list of possible destinations against the dozen or so threads on the subject chock-a-block full of advice from people I've come to trust and admire. We had a fabulous time, and your advice was spot on, as usual.

It's a great resource you've built here, mods, and thanks for fighting to keep it useful. And thanks especially (again) to all you users out there who bless us with your collective wisdom. I may not say it often enough, but I really... well, you know!

$5 is a bargain After literally years of lurking, I recently ponied up the five bucks to join. I don't have any FPPs and just a few comments, but a couple of days ago I posted an AskMeFi on a highly personal and potentially controversial topic. I didn't know what to expect - drama? meh? misunderstanding?

What actually happened? You guys broke my and my wife's hearts with sincere, to-the-point advice and empathy. Dios, scody and min in particular took time to share personal information.

So in the midst of the snark here, don't forget that this is sometimes a very special "place."

And thanks.

I was following this link and still am, but got caught up in a wild veer from the post. When I woke up the next morning I felt like an idiot for going off topic, but all trace of said idiocy was gone. Thanks

Its been a tough month, but you are good people. I would like to thank you. A month ago today, we lost our friend Soulbee.

All I can say is that you guys did exactly what Lexi would have wanted. You came together and responded in sympathy and kindness. I am yet still overwhelmed by the outpouring of support through this community, and there are far too many people than I can possibly thank in one short MeTa thread, but I'm going to take a shot anyway.

piratebowling - thanks for pointing out my mistake early on. I am so very glad I was able to be at Lexi's service.

ColdChef - you are a solid, thanks for giving me some of your time, it was extremely helpful.

loquacious - thanks for pointing out what I couldn't say.

jessamyn - your offer was incredibly kind and I thank you for it.

iamkimiam - thanks for being Lexi's friend. I am sorry for your loss.

Item - Lexi would have wanted you to come out of this doing better. I hope you are.

ikkyu2 - you also are a solid. Thanks for being part of this community and thanks for understanding what I was going through and bearing with me.

nickyskye - thanks for your kind and wise words. I think you and Lexi were something of kindred souls, though you might not have known each other.

mathowie - thanks for the donation on behalf of the community. The gesture spoke volumes about the good people around here.

I would also like to especially thank all of the people who posted such beautiful and moving passages in Soulbee's thread, and everyone (too many to mention) who filled up my MeFi mailbox with kind notes.

Many people wondered how Lexi died - understandably. To this day I have no reason to suspect suicide. Her family has chosen not to speak publicly about it and I respect their wishes. All I know is that in her last hours alive, we were chatting and sharing music and talking about Africa. She was favoriting some of my photos from there on flickr. I don't think someone planning their own death would be bothering with favorites.

One of the last things she asked me about was the languages I would have to learn when I returned to Africa more permanently. Lexi, I have good news. Today I accepted the position and I move to Kenya next month. I'll be working all over eastern, southern, and western africa in humanitarian supply chain management. I'll have to learn all those languages we talked about, and then some.

Thanks everybody. My 30th year has been bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter.

Dear jessamyn, cortex and mathowie, I have no idea why you didn't delete my post went it from working just fine to belly up with "database error". That was kind of you. The links are back to working again. Anybody have any idea why the links would have read database error like that? And is there a way to avoid doing that again?

Thanks, mattbucher!

I'd like to publicly thank MeFi user mattbucher for helping make last night a wonderful experience. It started with this AskMefi post about Freemasonry back in 2007. Matt answered some questions and invited people to email him if they had any other questions about Masonry.

My grandfather had been a Mason, so I'd always been interested in the organization. I emailed Matt, and he was very helpful in steering me towards more sources of information. Unfortunately I went into the hospital about a week later, and the Masonry stuff got dropped by the wayside.

In June of this year I contacted Matt again, and he gave some more pointers about contacting some local Masonic lodges to find out more info. I sent out emails, and ended up visiting a local Lodge a couple of times before I submitted a petition for membership in August.

Due to some staff changes at the Lodge the process took a while but my membership was eventually voted on last week and I was accepted as a member of Gray Lodge #329 here in Houston.

Last night was my initiation as an Entered Apprentice Freemason. Matt drove from Austin to Houston so that he could meet me in person and attend. He had dinner with everyone, participated in the ceremony, and presented me with a Masonic gift afterwards.

I'm having a hard time putting this into words - but it all boils down to "neat things happen when people meet on MeFi".

Matt, thanks for the help, the advice, and the friendship.

AskMe vent: Is it just me, or does anyone else get frustrated when they answer questions and the asker never comes back to say "Hey, thanks, that's what I was looking for" or "That's not what I meant, but let me clarify" or never comes back to give feedback to the answers in any way? I'm not talking about "anonymous" askers who obviously can't follow up. I mean regular/mundane/normal questions whose askers never bother to respond at all. It seems so rude to never come back and acknowledge the answers at all... But maybe it's just me. I don't know.

Forty Three Thousand untagged posts DONE.

Holy crap, the back tagging project (recent update) is complete! 43,000 old posts have been keyworded by a team of hundreds of volunteers here. A huge thanks to all, I never thought we'd finish up all those old MeFi posts. It's funny, I put a "keyword" table in the database around 2001 and was thinking of optionally letting people assign keywords to their posts but I didn't implement it here until January of 2005 (after seeing it take off so well with del.icio.us and flickr). After a couple years of using them, we realized having 33,000+ posts on mefi and 9,000+ early ask mefi questions without tags would be a huge undertaking down the road to catch up and tag those old posts.

interrobang floated the idea in late 2006 and in May of 2007 Jessamyn launched the distributed project of back tagging. pb built a cool ajaxy screen that would display ten posts at a time and let you drop in a string of keywords that all became tags, with a refresh button to give you ten more. Ten at a time, page after page, for almost a year until today when it was finally complete.

A big thanks to everyone that helped out (there's a small message on your userpage) because it was a real slog. I would do a dozen here and there but after a few months I still only had a few hundred complete. An extra special thanks goes out to our top super taggers -- here's the top ten and how many posts they tagged:

CKmtl (7,825)

nkknkk (4,999)

mumkin (2,923)

donnagirl (1,997)

dilettante (1,545)

scratch (1,520)

blue_beetle (1,456)

jessamyn (1,419)

ThePinkSuperhero (1,004)

Rumple (995)

We'll expose the tagging info in the infodump soon and the next project will be tag normalization and grouping and all sorts of stuff we couldn't do until we had everything tagged. So thanks again!

This holiday season (yes, I said it), I'd like to give thanks for the wonderful deletions of our ruling triumvirate. By deleting mediocre junk posts, you guys make MetaFilter a better place. Thank you. Really. I don't know if I've just started noticing recently, but it seems like there's a lot of crap being posted to the front page nowadays, and you guys usually take care of it but-quick. And despite what seems like a quickening pace, it still feels like you all err on the side of keeping a post up. Thank you for doing what is certainly a frequently thankless job, and for doing it with <s>grace</s> good humor.

No pb hate here, he just isn't a very active deleter.

Mwah!

Big, sloppy thank-you to MetaFilter! I asked a question about four months ago and was thrilled by the excellent responses. I mentioned in the post that it was for a book I was working on -- and now that book is here. Tomorrow, in fact, is the day it comes out. And even though I thanked folks in the book's acknowledgments, I wanted to thank everyone here as well -- especially the women of Ask MetaFilter who answered the question about books that changed your life as a girl, and some other people who inspired and shared their knowledge.

I wrote to grumblebee for some thoughts on Shakespeare and was thrilled to get a near-instantaneous reply. I emailed corpse in the library about girl pirate lore and was able to learn some facts about historical and fictional women at sea. Their generosity helped create two fantastic chapters: one on telling ghost stories (thanks to grumblebee, I was able to include the ghost scene from Hamlet, one of the scariest ghost stories ever), and one on daring girl pirates (thanks to corpse in the library, I didn't fall prey to thinking some of the fictional characters were actually real). And that question about books? That helped inform a chapter called "Books That Will Change Your Life."

I told my co-author while we were writing the book that the research and writing of it all felt like writing 100 MetaFilter posts. She didn't know what I meant, but it was a compliment to MetaFilter.

Anyway, thanks!

P.S. I'll be talking about the ghost story chapter on the Today Show this Wednesday, and I'll be reading at the Astor Place Barnes & Noble at 7 on Thursday if anyone would like a thank-you in person!
