thanks, mathowie, mods, and netizens of metafilter. metafilter is part of my life almost every day. you make me laugh or cry when i least expect it, give me advice even when i don't ask for it, and keep me informed of things that would otherwise slip past unknown to me. this is a pretty good place to be, but it would be awfully lonely without all you folks.

Not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving

Reminder to Americans: Not all MeFites live in your country, hence any references to “Thanksgiving” will be meaningless (or, for Canadians, will have arrived a month late). Thanksgiving isn’t like New Year’s Day: It isn’t universally recognized and it doesn’t have a fixed date worldwide. American MeFites who post about “Thanksgiving” are actually posting about American Thanksgiving. An acknowledgement that the readers of your post might not live in a country that celebrates Thanksgiving, or might live in Canada where it’s celebrated in October, would show greater understanding of the global reach of this site.

This is a callout. I accuse each and every one of you of being awesome. At the end of April, I was in Laredo, Texas, and suffered the small indignity of a spider bite on my back. By the time all was said and done, a few days later I was in the hospital, my kidneys had shut down, and I was "a day from dead" according to one of my doctors. I had emergency surgery, and all was as well as could be expected. At every step of the way, Mefites were and are involved. From the IRC crowd on #bunnies who cared enough to read first-aid stuff to me, to ColdChef and Stewriffic, who acted as communications links and helped keep people who cared updated, to the lovely Goshling, who rallied the Melbourne contingent to my side, to Jessamyn, who sent me a wonderfully wacky get-well package that kept my granddaughter and I busy for some quiet happy times during my convalescence, to Matt, who today brought me to tears with an incredibly generous gift, you are all awesome, incredibly generous people. I love you all. Of course there were other people involved, and I am certainly remiss in not mentioning each end every one of them. Mea Culpa, and if your name is not here, it's not that I don't appreciate you and love you for what you've done for me. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.

Portland, OR MeFites: Far from home this Thanksgiving? Us too. Please attend our Orphan's Thanksgiving dinner/short film festival! When: Thanksgiving Day, 11/22, 5:00 pm. Where: Our house (me and sleepy pete). Who: So far, me and sleepy pete. Also cmonkey, cortex, and secretariat. Menu: Big damn turkey and tofurkey (aka "jive turkey"). You bring: A side and a short animation/movie to watch afterwards. (Can't cook? Bring hooch or something store-bought. No movies? Don't worry, we'll have plenty.) How to RSVP: Please memail (aka "milfmail") me with your interest and proposed side so we can avoid a turkey and 500-crescent roll dinner. I will send you more details. Disclaimer: We have 2 cats. They are extremely full of dander and friendliness. However, if you touch their tails they will eat your face. We will say "aw" and supply Neosporin but we are not otherwise responsible for any injuries you sustain. Come as you are. No pictures if you don't want them taken of you, no shoutouts if you don't feel like shouting. We will just eat and drink and have some laughs and get sleepy. Don't be shy.
