Oh how easily we forget! Months ago (a year?) the server was consistently slow or down. Now it's smooth as a baby's butt and fast as the Google. Is Federer your server? I love it. My Mefi addicted brain thanks you.

Why is metafilter so slow and crash-prone? I know it gets a huge amount of traffic, but what causes the regular outages? Do you guys need a new server or what? I can't think of another major site that experiences as much downtime as metafilter does. (i'm not criticizing, I know how difficult it is to run a site of this scale... just curiouis)

Is there a reason why I consistently cannot access metafilter (or any other metafilter site) 2-3 times per day? Granted, these usually are at high traffic times of day. Mornings when I get up, when I get home from work, etc. However, that's not always the case. At first, I thought the site was just down once or twice. Now, it happens every day, most of the times I try to access the site. Nothing has changed in my PC setup at any point, and I was getting regular access to the site without problems about a month ago. If I wait long enough when I get a "page not found" error, the site usually will appear. I apologize if this was already covered.

Sorry about the downtime today, it looks like some comment spammers were DoSing the box with requests for long-dead trackback URLs. After that was cleaned up, some other weird bugs kept the server unavailable for a few hours, but things should be back to normal now.

Sorry about that, but for the first time since I started hosting mefi at server matrix, there was an outage:

D2 OUTAGE: www.metafilter.com Last Updated: 05/04/2005 19:05:17 Details: This server did not come back online after reboot. We will investigate shortly.

(bwalker-05/04/2005 19:05:17): This server would not power on. We have swapped the chassis and this machine is now powered up and responding to ping and RDC.

But all should be good now.

I'm genuinely interested as to when Matt thinks he'll have enough money to improve the site.

Let's take stock for a moment. We all know that MeFi is really, really slow, and really unreliable. Recently (for me at least), it's sometimes been unusably slow. I'm genuinely interested as to when Matt thinks he'll have enough money to improve the site. How is the ad revenue going? Are there any plans to charge for new membership?

So alas, one of the processor fans in the MetaFilter server decided to up and die, which coincided perfectly with a planned vacation to New York. Upon coming back, no replacement fan was to be found on my doorstep (due to stupid delayed shipping by the company from whom the replacement was ordered), so a trip to CompUSA later, we're back in business. Sorry 'bout that.

Sorry about the brief outage today; the networking equipment at this end of the T1 had a seizure, apparently, and needed to be restarted in order to get things back in order. Makes no sense to me (or to the networking gurus at my ISP), but there you have it.

Since about 6:00am PST, I must have had about 30+ server timeouts like so:
