I've noticed that the search function doesn't catch YouTube doubles if the URL isn't exact. Here's a tip: grab the alphanumeric ID of the video from its URL and search mefi using only that. For example, searching for 9Iq5yCoHp4o pulls up
this post, but a search for http://youtu.be/9Iq5yCoHp4o and http://www.youtube.com/embed/9Iq5yCoHp4o fail, even though they all point to the same video.

When I'm logged out, the link
here works correctly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=misN2jbpo1Y#t=1m05). When I'm logged in, the site has converted the hash to an ampersand (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=misN2jbpo1Y&t=1m05). I imagine this is a bug related to the inline YouTube player.

Genre name for the glitch/repition video art involving spongebob/sonic
Hello, I'm trying to find an old metafilter post that was all about a genre of youtube videos. They were very glitchy, repetitive, I remember Carlton from the Fresh Prince dancing inappropriately to Spongbob videos being shown on the television. Spongebob was a recurring theme in fact. They used a lot of scenes from that cartoon. It was quite dirty, and funny. It had a particular genre name but I just can't remember it and I can't hit the right set of search terms in Google...

I enjoy the sidebar and the Best of Metafilter subsite that draws from it. I can't help but notice, though, that arguably the most popular posts are not well-represented there.

Do unexplained YouTube links annoy you? I don't mean FPs with a pattern of clearly identified YT links, or someone making a topical and fairly obvious post like "I like this version better"; but just an inline
link with zero context.

So it turns out my 18 month old son has been attending a Junior Metafilter Moderator training course. He surprised us with
what he learned yesterday, so I figured I'd add it here in order to make our current (greatest) generation of mods' lives a bit easier.

Can I get some confirmation that it's just me or not? On my iPad 1 and iPhone 4 (software version 5.0 on both) the inline video player displays incorrectly.

In-page youtube videos only will play the first one I watched. Refreshing or returning lets me play other videos, but after that, it still only lets me play the first one of that session. I'm using google chrome. (

As a follow-up to
this post, we learned yesterday that YouTube singer Molly Lewis
has been invited to Harvard for a Tuesday evening gala honoring Stephen Fry. She'll sing her "Open Letter to Stephen Fry" openly to Stephen Fry.

MeFi members get the option of watching YouTube links in a popup window, courtesy of a button after the link text. YouTube allows deep linking via a time code appended to the URL, e.g.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8M6S8EKbnU&t=1m21s
If you click the link text above you get the page for the video, with the flash player cued to 1:21. If you clink the popup button instead, the time suffix in the URL is ignored and the video starts at 0:00.
Can we get the popup window to honor the time suffix? This seems like something either very easy or deceptively hard to implement.

Searching for an old post. It was a SLYT clip, if memory serves. I bellieve it was the introduction to a movie that featured three people (I think E. European gypsies) playing folk music in a field...

Did I find a bug or is something wacked out with my system? Weirdness with vids and caching...maybe?

Just one of those stupid "I can't find it!" questions - does anyone remember a Youtube video of a map being drawn whilst narrated by a guy from a country in northern Europe who explained what other countries seemed like to people from his country? It seemed sort of dumb, I know - like "this is X country, they only eat salad... this is Y country, they are very dirty and like parrots..." - and the map was a silly badly-drawn MS Paint type thing. I know I saw it on Metafilter somewhere, but I'm also certain I didn't see it in an FPP... and search is turning up nothing.

New flag proposal: region-restricted content. When such content is posted, many of the comments are complaints regarding the region restriction. Perhaps this enthusiastically and frequently voiced discontent would be better expressed via a flag.

Wouldn't the embedded youtube player be nicer in a non-modal draggable element, instead of this dim-the-lights-and-dont-click thing we've currently got?

What's the difference in MeFi-comment-worthiness between posting a link to a Youtube video of a song and an actual mp3 of the song itself?

The youtube video in
this FPP is not available in my country (Canada) due to copyright restrictions. I've watched it before and would like to watch it again. Can someone either point me to it somewhere else online where it might work (maybe on youtube at another account), or at least tell me the proper title or some info I can use to search myself? Thanks.

Episode 46 of the podcast was recorded last week on October 27, 2009 (sorry about the delay getting it edited and out). We cover our favorites from Projects, Jobs, MeFi, Ask MeFi, MetaTalk and even throw in a few Music favorites. Show notes follow.

I thought I'd gather together some follow-up links for various things I thought were worth following up on since they were originally posted to the blue. Some things worth checking out, but not individually meaty enough for a whole new FPP.

Whilst that was the lamest video I've ever sat through, you did point us to a pretty decent website of time-wasting videos. [more inside]

Is there some behind-the-scenes Youtube link changing going on? (not that there's anything wrong with that)
